Rating: Summary: Winter Prey - Sandford Review: Lucas Davenport is back and better than ever. With Winter Prey, Sandford relocates Davenport yet again, this time to the frozen countryside of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Sandford's last Prey novel, Silent Prey, tried something similar, moving Davenport to NYC but it was, unfortunately, not at all successful. Luckily Winter Prey proves to be a much better installment in the series.Much of the action and plot of the book follows Sandford's "prey format" and Sandford doesn't disappoint in Winter Prey. Quite a bit of the appeal in these stories is derived from the evolving back-story and the development of Davenport. And while Winter Prey largely ignored recurring characters seen in previous novels, Sandford's characters were likable and I can only hope that some of them return. Overall, if you felt burned by Silent Prey, you'll feel much better after Winter Prey. A real page-turner.
Rating: Summary: Very good Review: Lucas Davenport is feeling the ice-cold winter in this book in the prey-series. A horrible killer is on the loose, and contrary to many Davnport novels, the reader does not initially know who the killer is. But we are inside his mind all the time, we are inside his house, we listen to his talk, his thoughts and his 'family's' thoughts. And those are chilling thoughts. We know that the killer wants to kill Weather, the small-town doctor, who will later become Davenports girlfriend. The town's sheriff is trying to help as good as he can, but has issues on his own, specially after the town priest become suspect number one. All the evidence points this way, and it is now up to Daenport to sort through what is right and what is wrong.
Rating: Summary: Winter chills! Review: The "Prey" series is one of my favorite. This one had me feeling cold while I read it. Wonderful! Sandford creates some really great characters in this series and one great detective in Lucas Davenport. The stories are always gripping and believable. The action is fast paced and nerve racking. Most importantly, unlike so many other detective novel series by other other authors, the ending doesn't cheat the reader. Start with the first book in this series and work your way through - you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: The Best Sandford Novel Ever Review: This was the greatest effort, in my opinion, offered by Sandford's portrayal of tough cop, Lucas Davenport. The setting is in Wisconsin during the winter with temperatures at sub-zero levels. He, along with the Sherrif's department in the county, are on the prowl for a cold-blooded killer nicknamed, "The Iceman." What separated this book from the others was that the ending was very much a surprise. Unlike other Davenport novels, we usually know the killer in the beginning but in this one, we can only guess until he is revealed at the very end. A great nail-biting thriller.
Rating: Summary: Scary--Gripping--Thrilling Review: Winter Prey is the first book I have read by John Sandford. I wish I had found him before now. The book was great. I was in a trance the whole time, just living in my mind what he had written. Lucas Davenport was a great character. I cannot say enough good things about him or Shelly Carr, or the good lady Doctor and of course the Iceman. The book was well written, held my attention and was believeable. Parker or Connelly were my favorite authors until now. I would hate to choose between the three mystery writers. I hope his other books are as good.
