Summary: My husband is actually reading a book!
Review: Bought this book for my husband. He has 14-yr old daughter from previous marriage. DH does not read books, but I pushed him to just try the first 2 chapters. He is still reading & even admitted that it was a really good book. He is using some of the techniques with his daughter & he seems much less stressed. Time will tell if the techniques work with teen...

Summary: This book has changed my thinking and my life...
Review: I couldn't put this book down for days, it had so much information that I needed to help change my thinking. Right away I used the ideas and boy did things change around the house. I am a single parent and just didn't know how to get around the constant problems of reasoning with a strong willed child. I recommend this book to all parents even if you think you are doing all the right things. You will find great help and your life will be easier.

Summary: This book has ALL the answers we needed!
Review: I decided I needed a different approach with my teenagers when my son came home with a green Mohawk and a big Bush tattoo (George W., that is) one day and my daughter said she wanted to get a couple of nipple rings that would have sunk the Bismarck. This book really helped me take control of the situation. Now I have the green Mohawk and the nipple rings and my teenagers think I'm the coolest dad around, and they're as obedient as can be. Who would have believed it? But I owe it all to this book. Highly recommended.

Summary: Very Good, but not THE ANSWER TO ALL PROBLEMS
Review: In 1849, gold was discovered in California, and thousands rushed West to find their fortunes. Some did find a fortune, some found some gold, and some were left penniless. This book is not quite that situation, but close. There are some very good ideas in this book, which is part of a set put out by Cline and Fay. The authors clearly understand quite a bit about attachment theory, behavior management, and parenting. They have put their ideas together into a good package of explanations, techniques, exercises, and workshops. Thus the book has definite value.

Here comes the "however". However, when reading this, and related books, the reader gets the feeling that, for millenia, parents did not quite know the right way to parent their children, and the authors have finally discovered it for us. The theories and techniques get applied to every situation, with case histories of success. This is an over-simplification. Cline and Fay do have some research backing up their ideas, but there is nothing really new here, except for some of the phrases (some of which are very useful: "Not my problem", "What do you plan to do about that?"). There is a zealousness to the writing that, without directly stating it, gives the reader the feeling that "THE ANSWER TO ALL PROBLEMS" has been found. Some of the case histories sound like testimonials on an infomercial.

I am a practicing clinical psychologist who works with children and families. There IS valuable material in this book. If the methods are stated clearly and applied consistently, children's behavior will probably improve. However, there are many benign theories of parenting involving well-researched behavioral techniques, any of which, if applied clearly and consistently, will have the same results. Read the book, use it well, but don't expect it to be a panacea.

Summary: Excellent book that helps parents deal with Teens.
Review: The authors guide parents through the necessary steps teens take while learning to become adults by making choices, good and bad. They give real life examples of situations that cause parents a great deal of emotional stress and many excellent ways respond that allow you to stick to your standards, but in such a way without adding velocity to a viscous cycle. This book really helped me stand back, stay objective, and keep a proper perspective while loving and teaching my teen. I highly recommend this book for any parent struggling with any type of negative teenage behavior.

Review: This is an excellent easy to read and practical guide for all parents. I have attended workshops by Jim Fay and I still refer back to this book all of the time. Everyone I have recomended it to loves it! One of the best parenting resources on the market today. Well worth the money, and it makes a great book to give as gift .

Summary: A breakthrough book for this harried mom
Review: This tremendous book has helped restore sanity to a household which was in danger of falling apart at the seams. I have a 14 year old daughter and a 16 year old son who have definitely cottoned-on to the fact that when it comes to parenting I simply couldn't find my backside with both hands. They were threatening to take advantage of my haplessness. But I've adopted a new approach thanks to this book, and it seems to be working. Instead of bawling Stephanie out when I found a cigarette butt underneath her bedroom window, I simply told her about the recent study (which I just made up) which demonstrated how smoking gave you fat ankles. Dishonest? Maybe, but I'm almost certain she doesn't smoke any more. Similarly when Jonathan asked if he could get his nose pierced I gave wholehearted approval to the idea and suggested that it would be a great father-and-son thing for us both to get our noses done. 3 hours later, when he saw what a jerk I looked in a nose-ring he changed his mind.

Summary: The best book for parents raising teens
Review: Whether you have troubled teens, average teens, or great teens, this book provides a plethora of answers for parents with questions about being the best parent they can be. The love and logic program teaches parents how to love their child by taking care of themselves and by allowing their teen to suffer real world consequences. The book is half instruction and half ideas and suggestions for resolving common teen problems such as parties, friends, drugs, sex, backtalking, etc. I'm going to make it part of my permanent library.

Summary: This book has ALL the answers we needed!
Review: Writing a review that a book is excellent but there are excellent answers elsewhere, too, is absurd. That is not a review. It is a defense of other views.

The philosophies in this book are easy to read and understand and apply, and they WORK. It is great for both the Christian and secular world.
