Rating: Summary: More of the Same Review: Like her first book, Honk is an easy read with good-hearted, quirky characters and a really badass villan. I found the characters less compelling than those in Home is Where the Heart Is. I hope Letts next book will provide more.
Rating: Summary: Friends Make the Best Family Review: Once again I found Billie Letts giving me a delightful read. If anyone finds the Honk and Holler Cafe give me a holler.....I would love to live there.
Rating: Summary: Simply Marvellous Review: Letts tells the story in such a way that it draws the reader in and gets them hooked... wanting to know what happens next. Will Vera stay? Is Molly's daughter going to run off again?A wonderful, heart-warming read.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book! Review: The Honk and Holler Opening Soon, by Billie Letts, is a great book. It is about a disabled man, Caney, who is in a wheelchair after an accident in the Vietnam War. Caney lives in the back of his restaurant, the Honk and Holler Opening Soon. Caney's restaurant is in a small town in Oklahoma and does not get a lot of buisness until Vena Takes Horse, the new carhop, comes to town. Caney's only other employee at the time Molly O, doesn't seem to like Vena very much and the book takes you through their tough and bonding times a like. Bui, is a small Vietnamese man on the run from the law. He has had an unlucky time in the United States because he doesn't speak the language very well. But, Bui has a lucky break when he stumbles into the Honk and Holler one morning. Caney decides to give the young man a try at cook and doesn't seem to be able to get rid of him. To learn more about the risky adventures and many problems of Caney, Vena, Bui, and Molly O along with all the other usuals at the Honk, read the Honk and Holler Opening Soon.
Rating: Summary: Another winner from Billie Letts Review: In her second novel, Billie Letts again manages to create a wonderful collection of odd-ball, but endearing characters. I loved "Where The Heart Is", and looked forward with anticipation to this book -- I was not disappointed. As cliche as it may sound, this was another book which I did not want to end. The story centers around "The Honk", a diner operated by a parapeligic Viet Nam Vet. Ms. Letts creates a blend of distinct and (mostly) lovable characters, including some "regulars" of the diner and a couple of people who appear and become the catalyst for change. Ms. Letts leads the characters through a whole range of life events, which leave you with the entire range of emotions. In the end, you are left with the feeling that these people have formed a family of their own, probably with stronger bonds than "real" families. If you loved "Where the Heart Is", you will love this book. I hope that Ms. Letts is writing another book, as we speak!
Rating: Summary: Great Book - Characters of Billie Letts are Alive! Review: The Honk and Holler and the characters themselves are so vividly described that you can even visualize the pain of hard times and the jubilation of real love within the Honk and on the faces of it's beloved customers and flock.
Rating: Summary: Sure, I'll holler about it! Review: What can I say, this is an outstanding book! I read Letts' Where the Heart Is a while ago and really enjoyed the style and location of the book. I figured if "Honk" was anything like that it should be a good read. At first when I met the characters I was a bit nervous I wouldn't relate to them: Caney-a vietnam vet, Molly O-an older midwestern women who lives in a trailer, Vena Takes Horse-a part Chow/Cherokee wanderer, and Bui-a vietnamese refugee seeking work and a grasp on the English language. But Letts pulled through, I felt so much for these characters by the time I got halfway through, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. (And I also cannot wait for Letts' next book.)
Rating: Summary: Part of the family of the "Honk" characters. Review: The characters were wonderful, and what a mix of personalities that all blended as a family. It was just so pleasant to read -- so heartwarming. I didn't want it to end. I read an average of 3 books a week, and of all that I have read this year to date, I enjoyed this the most. I probably liked it at least as well as "Where the Heart Is" but I think I will remember this family of characters longer.
Rating: Summary: Heartwarming story! Review: Honk and Holler was a wonderful and heartwarming story! I read this book in one day because I couldn't put it down! I just had to find out what happened to Caney and Vena; Molly O and Brenda; Bui and his wife; and what evil part Sam Kellam would play in the story. Everyone put this on your summer reading list! It's the kind of book that when you finish it you feel as though you have said good bye to a good friend. Enjoy this one!
Rating: Summary: Honk and Holler Opening Soon Review: I enjoyed this book so much I did not want it to end. You can really get into the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone.
