Rating: Summary: Fantasy With A Twist Review: I am a avid fan of Nora Roberts but was looking for a change when I picked up this book. Change it was! The story was original and spicy. The time travel could have come off hokey but it didn't, almost believable. There were certain parts that were a little corny but made the story funny as well. For a good, get your mind off of everything else, book I would recommend!
Rating: Summary: Easy Read... Review: Read it in a day... Great novel for 40 something long-time girlhood friends to read.
Rating: Summary: Another disappointment! Review: After picking up a copy of "The Summerhouse" in the library, I was eager to start reading. Before "Temptation", one of Jude Deveraux's recent novels, I would buy her books based on the author alone. Now, I'm more cautious about wasting my money on her newer work. I fell in love with her writing after reading "A Knight in Shining Armor" and have loved most of her earlier work. However, her last few books have been a waste of my time and money (especially since they're released in hardback first). Her writing is just not the same. There is no context to these characters, and I didn't get the feeling that I "knew" them; they weren't even likable! After reading the book, I was venting to my husband about what a waste of time it was and he suggested that maybe J.D. has a ghost writer now. I hadn't thought of it before, but it could be a possibility. Her writing style is just not what it used to be. I'm sorry to say that I would not purchase anymore of her books, but I might read it from the library if there was nothing else to read. I gave the book two stars because the premise was good and it had promise. I kept reading, hoping that it would get better, but it just didn't. I still do love "A Knight in Shining Armor", though.
Rating: Summary: Choices We Make Review: This is a great story, especially, for women 40 years and older. It begins when Leslie Headrick, Madison Appleby, and Ellie Abbott first met in their early 20s.Now that they're about to turn 40, they meet for a weekend at a summerhouse in Maine where they disclose details of their lives during the past 20 years. Each woman has qestions about the lives they have made, but none of them suspect the startling opportunity they're about to be offered to relive those choices and change their futures.
Rating: Summary: Three Friends Face a Mid-Life Crisis Review: Leslie, Madison and Ellie met while standing in line at the DMV on their 21st birthday 19 years ago and became friends after sharing with each other their hopes and dreams. Now, nearing their 40th birthdays, they plan a reunion at which they share their accomplishments and disappointments. Madison and Ellie have both been through painful divorces and have become bitter and unhappy. Leslie, although still married, is also unhappy and feels that she has lost herself.Impulsively, they visit Madame Zoya, who promises to let them go back to a time in their past and relive their lives. She gives them the choice of what date they want to return to and whether they want to remember their former lives. Leslie and Ellie both choose to go back but want to remember their past lives. Madison chooses to start over, without the memories. Even though the premise is pure fantasy, the concept of "what would you do differently" is very thought provoking. Would you choose a different husband? Would you choose a different career? How would your life have changed if you had made different choices in your youth? The characters are all fascinating and strong women. The separate, but eventually interwoven stories of their lives both before and after their transformation are interesting and romantic. Even though I knew it was a totally unrealistic bit of romantic escapism, I couldn't put the book down.
Rating: Summary: Quite a page turner for me Review: This is only the second Deveraux book I have read and I'm quite taken by her style. I, too, found that it caused me some reflection on my own life. I have recommended this book to several friends.
Rating: Summary: A good book for reflecting Review: I read about the lives of these three women and how they changed and found myself reflecting on my own life. It is an inspiring read and also helped me to be more content w/ what I have. For those who said these women were weak and could have avoided this, they are insensitive and need to get a reality check themselves. It happens to all of us...While we can't go back in time, though, we can make changes and this was a very refreshing read by JD...
Rating: Summary: just a touch of time travel....... Review: This isn't a normal read for me, but it was very good, It's a story about 3 women who met at the highway dept to renew their drivers licenses. About 20 years later, they re-unite to celebrate their shared birthdays and catch up on each others life events. During their reunion, they talk to Madam Zoya the futune teller/psychic who gives them a chance to go back into their life and change life's direction if they choose. Some choose to and some don't. It's interesting to watch lives take such different directions because of only 1 choice change. This book will make the reader think about choices made and maybe choices not made and maybe choices wished were made. The small amount of time travel was very interesting and imaginative. It's a light read in my opinion with surprising twists til the very end. If you are a romance reader, this book will pull you right in.
Rating: Summary: loved it Review: I simply loved this book. I like the way Jude Deveraux tells these sort of time travel stories. It was sad yet very happy. Good read and quick read. I wish I could go back in my own life. I especially liked Leslie's story. She is a lot like me.
Rating: Summary: great premise, but falls flat Review: I usually do not read romances, but having read "Knight in Shining Armor" and LOVING it, I decided I would read another J.D. book. I was very disappointed, but after reading the reviews of most other readers, I just think I am different. First off, the characters seemed to be obsessed with weight. I find the subject of weight to be very boring and this story seemed to be obsessed with it. The idea of the story was good, hence the 2 stars instead of 1. Three women meet on their 21st birthday and decide to get back together for their 40th. They are all miserable, and one, HORROR OF ALL HORRORS gained weight (tragic, I know). They stumble upon a woman with supernatural powers who sends them back in time to rewrite their lives, then they have the choice to take their new lives or keep the ones they have. Thank heavens for them, the fat one ends up skinny, and all is perfect in the end. Sounds like a great plot, and I think it could have been, but I could not relate in the least to any of these characters or what they were going through. Even having gone through a horrible divorce and now a wonderful 2nd marriage, I still could not got into this story.
