Rating: Summary: A wonderful story Review: Sarah, Plain and Tall is a touching story about a woman who travels from Maine to the midwest as a mail-order bride. Sarah comes to marry Jacob, a farmer, and to live with him and his two children, Anna and Caleb. Sarah is homesick for Maine and the children find it difficult to accept Sarah. Learning to live together and love one another is a challenge, but one they manage to overcome together. This book is a small treasure well-worth reading again and again.
Rating: Summary: Sweet, hopeful, genuine Review: A very charming little children's book. Some of the aura of the Laura Ingalls Wilder, but without the primitive quality. A real gem of a book.

This book is about a widowed man, and his two lonesome children. Jacob, lost his wife when Caleb (his son), was born. Rating: Summary: Love Makes A Family Review: Love Makes a Family Sarah, Plain and Tall, is about a young girl named Anna who tells a love story about how her small family found their missing link to happiness. Anna's mother died at the birth of Caleb, Anna's younger brother. Since the death of her mother things have not seemed right around the prairie, there has been a longing for a mother figure. In the times of covered wagons and tumble weed, a man could write off for a mail order bride; which is what Jacob, Anna's father did. In response a young woman from Maine, named Sarah, showed up on the prairie in a yellow bonnet, she was plain and tall. Instantly the family fell in love with Sarah, she fit the roll of mother, nurturer, lover, and partner. Sarah completed the circle of love that made the family. Sarah, Plain and Tall is a love story, but not your typical love story. It is about the love that a young girl and her family crave for a mother. This story shows the importance of a female roll model in a family. Even though the family was fine and being taken care of, each other family members were missing something. Anna wanted someone to braid her hair, Caleb wanted someone to sing like his mother did, and Jacob wanted a partner to help him with raising his family and to give him affection. This is a love story, but a most unusual one. The structure is strong, and the characters firmly established. (Sutherland) This book shows the effect on how a mother type role is needed in the stability of a family. Once Sarah arrived, things in the family changed. Flowers were being hung up, children were taken care of, haircuts were given, and meals were always prepared. Everyone in the family became happy, and realized on what they had been missing out on since the death of their mother. Although, Sarah missed Maine but she herself found here roll to be satisfying. Sarah's character is a strong independent woman who is needed by three people who crave caring. A woman automatically has the instinct to be a mother. Sarah never realized hers until she found this family. Sarah had a simple life in Maine. She lived with her brother, who was about to be married. Sarah had never really had the opportunity to be needed. In Anna's family Sarah was needed and was loved. She became a mother and a partner over night; she fell in love with the family and her new life. " 'We thought you might be thinking of leaving us,' I told her. 'Because you miss the sea.' Sarah smiled. 'No,' she said. 'I will always miss my old home, but the truth of it is I would miss you more.'" The family was completed with Sarah in it, and Sarah's life was completed with the family in it. This book shows that no matter how complete a family is; a mother's love can make the family stable and secure. We all have voids in our lives, we just never know what they are until they are filled.
Rating: Summary: Sara's chance... Review: The first in the film trilogy, including Skylark and then Winter's End. In this first story, Sarah leaves her home in Maine to go live on the Kansas Prairie in 1910. The whole story is terribly romantic. Sarah has answered Jacob's ad in the newspaper for a wife. She also makes her decision to leave her brother William's house because he is getting married and she longs for a chance to start her own life. Although Sarah loves the sea, she feels it is time to move on. She first writes to Jacob and the children to get to know them better. Once she arrives, Jacob's children are apprehensive and think she will not want to stay. They then realize Sarah is not quite like their mother. Sarah is just well, Sarah and has a feisty spirit. She does however take on the motherly responsibilities of cooking and helping with the farm work. This movie has some great humor and the scenery is refreshing. The country life is never dull and when a wind storm threatens their home, Sarah, Jacob, Anna and Caleb must take shelter in the barn. The cat is missing and Sarah runs about looking in the rain for Seal (who is gray and named after the seals in Maine). I think Skylark is the best in the series and stands alone as a great film. Sarah, Plain and Tall is the bases for the whole series. A great family movie, yet it also has a undercurrent of romance for the adults. Children will enjoy seeing all the farm animals and trying to figure out if Sarah will really stay. If you love this movie, don't miss Skylark. It is even better! Glenn Close and Christopher Walker are just warming up for their roles in the second movie!
Rating: Summary: A bride from afar Review: MacLachlan's book takes us back to a time when a man could put an ad in the newspaper and order himself a bride. Papa, a farmer in the western plains, has been widowed since the birth of his second child, Caleb. He advertises for a wife and gets Sarah, plain and tall (and smart and fun). She agrees to stay and take care of Papa, Caleb, and Anna, although she misses the Maine coast where she grew up. The plot, like life on a 19th century farm, moves slowly and simply along. I was suprised and touched to learn how eager the children were to make Sarah happy and comfortable in her new life. The story was very short and easy to read, and would be of interest to children in elementary school.
Rating: Summary: Sarah plain and tall Review: Sarah comes to town. Sarah wants to know how it feels like to live on a farm. Sarah loves the sea. Sarah and Caleb want to now how each others places looks like so they write to each other. Caleb wants to now what the sea looks like. Sarah wants to now how to ride a horse and how to drive a wagon. Sarah wants to fix the roof and a storm comes. They're all stuck in the barn untile the storm goes away.
Rating: Summary: Sarah Plain and Tall Review: I really liked Sarah Plain and Tall because it was very introesting to read. One of the things that was introesting was how it makes you feel like your there. The characters all have different interests. I liked how they made things so real. Everthing they thought of trying to make Sarah at home. Sarah Plain, and Tall was a okay book. But I like Harry Potter better. I think that you should read it and see what you think.
