Review: I first read the book and was glad to see that the movie stays with the same story line. One of our favorite movies by far. Great for kids and families. Tender, sweet, and moving. Glenn Close and Christopher Walken are wonderful. This movie will tug at your heart. We need more movies like this one.

Summary: Excellent choice for bibliotherapy!
Review: I enjoyed reading this book. This would be a great story to be used as bibliotherapy. It is a true life story of what some children might go through in there life time. The loss of a parent can be very depressing for a child and sometimes reading a novel concerning this issue can help the child get through the tough times. The setting in this story is one of long ago, however, I believe that children of today can easily relate.

Summary: Classic Story filled with love and compassion!
Review: Sarah, Plain and Tall is a Newberry Award winner for intermediate readers. This book can be classified as historical fiction.

The story takes place on the frontier. You can gain the overall sense of the setting, however, it is never clearly defined. A young girl, Anna, tells the story of her family's life without their mother. Anna's father puts an ad in the newspaper for a wife and mother of his children. Sarah answers the ad, and the group begins to create a family out of love.

This is an enjoyable story, and it will make you smile! I read and reviewed this book while in Dr. Tom Sherman's Children's Literature course at Winona State University.

Summary: Sarah Plain and Tall
Review: Sarah grew up with the sea by her side. It is so much a part of her that when she has to leave it, she is deeply saddened. This is something I can relate to. I grew up in Cornwall, England, and the one thing I would say I miss most of all is being able to go down to the rocks when I feel sad, and watch the salt water slap against the granite. It is so calming. Sarah is obviously upset throughout the book, but deals with her homesickness by seeking similarities with the sea. She compares the ripples as the wind blows past the hillocks of wheat to the rolling waves of the ocean. Seeking similarities, and connections is a basic and reassuring trait of human beings. The writer cleverly intertwines the three strands of the story, the Mother's story, the family's and Sarah's, mixing the third person narrative with the letters. The descriptive language is both beautiful and soothing. We see the story from all sides, and so can contrast the isolation Sarah felt in the beginning with feelings of the children, who want nothing more than to see their father happy. We can see that there are strains on everyone, but that each of them finds a way of dealing with it. In a sense the children's upheavals at loosing their mother and the introduction of a stepmother, are the harshest, but they seem to manage to cope. Looking at Sarah's progression through the book, you can see how she moves from feeling like an outsider, to discovering a way of coping with her feelings, and we see her starting to feel happy again. This is a book which deal in themes that are common to many people. Loneliness, feeling left out, being homesick. The writer deals with these and other themes in a light hearted manner, making this a thoroughly readable and enjoyable book.

Summary: Get a short history lesson while reading a family story
Review: Kids should read Sarah Plain and Tall because if they like the midwest and a farn, it would be interesting to them, if they like animals, it would be good, too, because there are a lot of animals in the book. Another reason kids should read this book is the characters. they're great! There aren't too many to follow -just Sarah, Anna, Caleb, and papa. You get to really know their feelings. It's not too boring because you always wonder if Sarah will stay or move back to Maine. The book made me wand to ask a lot of questions.

Summary: Will Sarah stay?
Review: This is the classic story of two children on a farm in the West whose Father advertises for a mail-order bride, Sarah of Maine. Sarah leaves the seacoast that she loves to travel to this new home. This short novel won the 1986 Newbery Medal for best contribution to American children's literature and it has always been popular. It was even made into a film for television starring Glenn Close. The story is based on a true event in the history of the author's family. The book gives children insight to life on a homestead and the importance that homesteaders had in having an intact family.

Summary: Interesting Book
Review: I like the book because it would help kids whose mothers have died. They could understand that they could accept a new mother. Also I like the parts of the book that describe the places and the animals. I like Sarah telling them about her family. When I read the book I could imagine what the places they lived looked like.

Summary: It's a Good Book!
Review: I really like this book. Caleb, the little boy, was funny because he asked many questions. The book has interesting parts and sad parts. For example Anna was sad because she missed her mom. Sarah loved the animals and she was sad when something happened to the baby sheep. I think Jacob really falls in love with Sarah. This book was very interesting about Anna, Caleb, Jacob, Sarah, and the animals. Do you think Jacob will marry Sarah?
