Rating: Summary: One of the best books I have read about the sea! Review: The author does an excellent job of portraying the power of the sea, and the emotions of those subjected to that power. I spent two years on a 65 foot patrol boat and found myself reliving some of the more humbling moments when you realize how insignificant you really are. Great research on Mr. Junger's part and I found it very readable.
Rating: Summary: Telling about the book and how i thought it was a great book Review: I thought this book was a GREAT BOOK. It was fasinating and thoughtfull. The book is one of the best books i ever read. It was powerfull and moving, it also kept me guessing if the Andria Gail was going to make it to saftey or die. The book did ,I thought, went out on a lot of little stories ,but besides that it was a great book. I thought you got a real desription of the storm and it's capeabitity's.
Rating: Summary: Over-hyped Author Review: What a disappointment after all of the so-called book reviewers went on and on about how well this book was written. The content was interesting but the writing style was mediocre. It reminded me of reading some of the papers my children wrote in grade school. I guess that any style of writing is acceptable now and I shouldn't be so disappointed but I sure was. The author should get an "A" for his research but I would give him a "D+" for his style and lack of fluidity. 2 Stars is pushing it!
Rating: Summary: Rings true -- from a former seaman Review: The book does a fantastic job of capturing what happens on a sea-going fishing boat during heavy weather.I worked on a commerical fishing boat for nearly three years before I felt that my "number was nearly up," and decided it was time to quit. This book accurately captures those moments of abject fear that hit when heavy weather rolls in.
Rating: Summary: I'm now hooked on stories of man vs. mother nature Review: Being the passenger of a boat that swirled around the Chesapeake Bay during this "perfect storm" I have the utmost respect for the characters, victims and family members, Junger so eloquently describes. However, you don't have to be able to recall this storm to appreciate Junger's work. It's obvious, he did a tremendous amount of research, and put a great deal of effort into this great account of Mother Nature showing her nasty side. My wife read the book after me, and she too was hooked, saying it was impossible to put down. I can't wait to see what Mr. Junger does for an encore. His first will be hard to top!
Rating: Summary: A great sea story Review: I read this book on a long plane flight one day. Between the subtle air turbulence and the great writing I could almost feel the motion sickness of the rough seas. You'll certainly gain a new respect for the ocean, Mother Nature, and the Coast Guard that patrols our waters.
Rating: Summary: Exemplary Audacity Review: This book. This book depicts every single possible hazardous situation possible on the seas and lunges it upon these 6 men in the Andrea Gail. These brave 6 men have prmonitions of the dath, and have courage to go about making their living. All 6, in need of quick cash, give the boat all they have and they stick with her to the tragic end. The was Sebastian Junger goes through the lisfestyles of being a comercial fisherman in the 1990's. The charaters in this story are one of brave vigor. I strongly suggest you read this well written piece of American Literature
Rating: Summary: The futility of man against nature exposed Review: The recognition of a true author comes from an ability to make his reader experience and think about the events he depicts.A Perfect Storm puts you as close to a boat in a storm as the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan did for the Second World War. Sebastian Junger is a man who truly understands the power of nature and the unthinking courage that fishing crews experience on a daily basis. As a city worker, I commend this unrelenting bravery in the face of nature's wrath. You certainly live this experience, while remaining in your own safe urban harbour.
Rating: Summary: Great hype, but does Junger live up to it? Review: I had heard a lot about this book and picked it up at a bookstore at an airport and read it while on the plane. whew! i felt that it was a plain read, i applaud Junger's narrative and craft, but i left the book feeling that something was missing. the characters could have been brought forward in a much etter way. overall, a good book, but only if you like the sea, i guess.
Rating: Summary: Most Over-rated Book Ever Review: I had heard wonderful things about The Perfect Storm. I must be reading a different book under the same title! This is the most poorly written example of a supposedly non-fiction account. Do yourself a favor, read "Into the Wild" and "Into Thin Air" instead.
