Rating: Summary: Excellent Read; nail-biting, even though you know outcome Review: Read It. You won't be sorry
Rating: Summary: A Heck of a Tome Review: I picked this pp up in Balto airport and read all the way to Fla; good thing I was golfing, and not fishing!! This book was informative, educational and entertaining. Junger did a fantastic job of describing the characters in Glouster, and the way of life of a fisherman. I had heard all the hype @ this book, and that put me off for awhile, but I am sure glad I read it. Now, I am only afraid that with movie rights bought and paid for Hollyweird will ruin it!! Mel Gibson as Billy tyne ok..............
Rating: Summary: EDUCATIONAL, INFORMATIVE AND ENTERTAINING AS WELL... Review: Read this one on vacation in Hawaii last week. Read it in two days! A real page-turner. Especially for sailors or boat owners. This author is a great asset to the fishing community and the book is as entertaining as it is educational. I wish this Junger would write more books! Read it and re-read it!
Rating: Summary: This was one of the best book's i have ever read Review: This book did a great job of telling about the "Perfect Storm." The details in this book make you seem like you are there in the storm. Good job Mr. Junger!!
Rating: Summary: Story line a bit disjointed. Review: Basic premise of the story is pretty good. But the lack of writing style makes it hard to follow in some places. The various participants stories don't seem to be clearly connected to each other. Otherwise, the descriptions of the massive seas, high winds and sheer terror are fasinating. As one who has personally experienced high seas and high winds, I could quickly identify with the descriptions.
Rating: Summary: WARNING: Attention span required Review: A great technical elucidation wound around a gripping human tragedy. Reminds me of Simon Winchester's THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN. As with that book, most reviewer complaints refer to "distracting" technical excurions. I for one still enjoy a story that teaches me something along the way, and I'm glad writers like Junger still have the courage to write them.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Power Review: Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm does bind the restless wave, Who bids the mighty ocean deep it's own appointed limits keep. . .The sea is no respecter of persons. She can be as vicious as she is beautiful, and there is not better narrative portraying the glorious oceans as their worst than "The Perfect Storm." Anyone who has ever sailed offshore, or experienced a small boat caught in a 30 mile fetch with 40 knot winds has experienced in microcosm what Junger so vividly describes. Visualize an infinite series of ten story buildings that must be scaled and descended with survival dependent on your ability to do that. It defies imagination, but this book comes as close as anyone ever has to describing the terror of nature out of control. "The Perfect Storm" is required reading for any boater, offshore sailor, or their wannabes. Those who love the sea must also respect her awesome power. . . . O hear us when we cry to Thee, for those in peril on the sea.
Rating: Summary: Expected More Review: I was drawn to this book, mainly as I lived half of my life just south of Gloucester Mass. Having been at the beach as the waves were tossed ashore by an offshore hurricane, I have always loved and yet feared the oceans power. This book could have been so much more. Every time I started to be drawn in to the lives of those involved, I ended up being distracted by so much technicality. Was it really necessary to know every little detail of the weather patterns? It was hard to picture alot of his detail. Still, I didn't hate the book, but honestly, I was mostly bored.
Rating: Summary: Tedious Review: After hearing so much hype I determined that I should probably read this book. What a disappointment. It could have been a good book but page after page of tedious boring facts like "they went into the bar for a drink, then they got in the car and went to the diner, then they went back to the bar, then they went back to the diner".... and on and on. Ho Hum. Poor writing style. It just could not hold my attention, No doubt he had all the facts about the boats and the men right but it lost so much in the telling. Too bad. Mr. Junger doesn't even pass "Writing 101"
