Rating: Summary: A Series of Unfortuneate Events- The Austere academy Review: Javier, Eddie (Biscuit) 3-28-03 Per. 6 A Series of Unfortunate Events- The Austere Academy by Lemony Snicket This is the fifth book is the Series of Unfortunate Events called The Austere Academy. In this book we again find the three orphaned Baudelaire children, Violet, Sunny, and Klaus, on another of their very unfortunate adventures. They meet very helpful friends named Isadora and Duncan. Count Olaf disguises himself as a P. E teacher to try to get the orphans money. He tries to make them so tired that they slack off in school, so they would have to live with him. They also have made friends with to great kids. When Count Olaf finds out that they too have a fortune, and they have found out that he was disguised, he kidnaps Duncan and Isadora! I liked this book because the three orphans made two friends. They helped them with their plan. They also helped them find out Count Olaf's Plans. ''It is sure a good thing that we ran in to you twins! (P. 50)' Even thought the story doesn't have a happy ending, or other any happy things, this was a happy thing. To me, it was fun to see how the relationship between them grew and to see all the inventions they were making up. The part that I didn't like about the book was how Count Olaf kidnapped Isadora and Duncan. To me this was very sad because they were the only two people that were nice to the Baudelaire's. ''No!' Klaus screamed, but Count Olaf merely smiled stepped on to the front seat, and began driving away, just as Violet and Sunny reached their brother. (P.216)'' Duncan and Isadora had been researching Count Olaf and wrote about him in their notebooks. Before they drove away they told the Baudelaire's to look in their notebooks, but Count Olaf snatched them away! Now the orphans need to fond out what they found out. Now they are probably going to end up on, yet another, unfortunate adventure. My favorite part of the book is when Violet is making staples for sunny, because sunny (who is also a little baby) was a secretary for vice Principal Nero. Violet was always good at making inventions, and now her genius really shows. Since they don't have a guardian to sign a permission slip for a dorm room they have to sleep in a little shack. The shack has fungus and crabs, violet very cleverly uses them, and creamed spinach. The crabs like to pinch toes, so violet puts a potato by their pincers, and when they are about to strike it, she moves the potato and puts some metal in its place. She makes glue out of the creamed spinach and uses it to hold a fork. When she's done she uses it to shape the staples around. I would recommend this book because it is fun, sad, and suspenseful.
Rating: Summary: The Austere Academy Review: The Austere Academy By:Lemony Snicket... The Austere Academy is the fifth book in a series called A Series of Unfortunate Events. Three orphans named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are forever being chased by the evil Count Olaf. Count Olaf disguises himself as a gym teacher in this book, and tries to steal the Baudelaire fortune. The three children have to move from home to home to escape Olaf, this time their home is a dirty little room with crabs in it, in the academy. Count Olaf makes them run lap after lap in the school's field. They luckily come upon two people named Duncan and Isadora, who they quickly befriend. Even though Olaf tried to capture the three siblings, he failed, but did capture their two friends. I liked this book because, it was very interesting and very imaginative. It also adds some humor throughout the book. This book is very fast reading too, because it's a fun and enjoyable. I also like the characters and how they are described in the book.""When she ties her hair up like that,"Klaus explained to the Quagmires,"it means she's thinking of an invention." This quote describes Violet a little. All of the plots are interesting too. I didn't like this book because, of all the miserable things that happen to the three orphans. But, that's part of what is different about this book and the whole series. There is hardly anything happy in th Series of Unfortunate Events books. ""Cakesniffing orphans in the orphan shack!"" This is an example of what the bully of the academy, Carmelita Spats, says to the Baudelaires. My favorite part of the book was when the Quagmires help the Baudelaires. The two twins take the place of the three siblings when Olaf makes them run laps at night. They do this so the Baudelaires can figure out a plan on how to escape Olaf. This task was very dangerous, but since the five of them were very good friends they helped eachother out. I really enjoyed this book and highly reccomend it!
Rating: Summary: A fortunate event -- the series gets better Review: What's this? Character development? Backstory? In the Series of Unfortunate Events? After being disappointed in the second and third installments in this series and only partially impressed with book four, this fifth volume came as quite a welcome surprise. The woes of the Baudelaire orphans continue as they are shipped off to Prufrock Academy, a miserable school with an egocentric violinist for a vice principal, foolish teachers, crabs, mold and the metric system. There is only one bright spot for the Baudelaires -- for the first time in this series, they encounter some genuine friends in the Quagmire triplets, Duncan and Isadora (the third triplet, sadly, perished in the fire that killed the Quagmire parents. Fire seems to be the tool of choice for creating orphans in the world of Lemony Snicket). The Quagmires are the first characters we've met since the Baudelaires in book one that aren't ignorant, evil or both, and having them around seems to help the heroes grow a bit as characters. Even the infant Sunny begins to periodically use the proper English word on occasion instead of the gibberish that Snicket usually takes a bizarre delight in defining. Speaking of Snicket, he teases us with a snippet about his own past and the relationship of his mysterious, beloved Beatrice to the nefarious Count Olaf, the architect of the Baudelaire's woes. That little hint of backstory was enough to really ignite my interest again. So for those of you getting tired with the series after downright boring installments like "The Wide Window," I sympathize with you, but stick it out! It does get better!
Rating: Summary: The Austere Academy Review: This book is called The Austere Academy by my favorite author named Lemony Snicket. The Austere Academy is the best book so far in a Series of Unfortunate Events. This book is about how the three Baudelaire orphans land up in a new place called The Austere Academy. The person who is in charge of this school is named Pricipal Nero and loves to play the violin but doesn't know how to. The Baudelaire children are terrified of what might happen in this school and they should be, except one little good thing happens. They make new friends called the Quagmire triplets and their names are Duncan, Isadora, and Quigley, but Quigley died in a fire along with the Quagmire parents. Of course Count Olaf appears again, dressed ridiculously as a physical exercise teacher. And like always, the Baudelairs always recognize him. This book is mainly about a school called the Austere Academy and its motto which means "Remember You Will Die." When the Baudelaires read this they are terrified and run into a dreadful girl named Carmelita Spats. She becomes their enemy in the end and thinks she's the most prettiest, cutest, and sweetest girl in the whole school because Coach Genghis or Count Olaf chooses her as his messenger. While at school Violet must go through class while listening to boring stories and looking at a man named Mr. Remora who us always eating bananas. Klaus must measure everything and anything Mrs. Bass tells him to measure. Sunny is too young to go to boarding school and must be Pricipal Nero's secretary while stapling papers, answering phone calls, and typing letters on a typewriter. They feel very exhausted while they have to live in their Orphans Shack filled with tiny crabs that bite, a tan colored fungus on the ceiling, and an ugly wall decorated with tacky wallpaper. Everything gets worse when Count Olaf or shall I say Coach Genghis makes the orphans run in a S.O.R.E. program that makes them sore. The reason that I liked this book is because the Baudelaire children at least felt happy for a moment of time that didn't happen for a long time. The Baudelaires had great friends who helped them through alot of things and would stand up for them. Soon, this ended to a collapse. This is why I disliked the book. The Baudelaire children were in a helpless situation with Coach Genghis and all that running. In the end they felt as bad as bad can ever be. Overall though, I really liked this book.
Rating: Summary: The Austere Academy Review: This book is the best book so far out of A series of Unfortunate Events. I really liked this book because the Baudelaires finally seemed less hopeless because they made new friends named the Quagmire triplets. Their names were Isadora, Duncan, and Quigley, but Quigley died in a fire with the Quagmire parents. Of course, Count Olaf shows up in this book, and he is dressed as their new physical exercise teacher. He wears a turban to cover his long eyebrow, long running shoes to cover his tattoo, and dresses in a shirt and shorts, dressed normally like a physical exercise teacher. The Baudelaires also make an enemy in this book named Carmelita Spats. In the book before this one, the poor children had to work in a Lumbermill. Now they are stuck in a boarding school named The Austere Academy. The motto of this school is "Rememeber You Will Die." The person in charge of this graveyard looking school is a man called Principal Nero who doesn't know how to play the violin but does anyway. The Orphans live in the Orphans shack, which is covered with tan colored fungus and tiny crabs that pinch, and of course the ugly looking wallapaper on the ugly walls. The Baudelaires feel so depressed until two twins stick up for them when Carmelita Spats makes fun of them. The Baudelaires have their ups and downs in this book, but in the end they feel more miserable than they can ever be. At least in this book, they felt happy at some points. The reason I liked this book is because it was so fun and full of happy and bad thoughts. But for once the Baudelaires had a chance to experience happiness in a long time. The Quagmires really helped them get used to the school and I'm really thankful that Lemony Snicket wrote about them because the Baudelaires always felt so tortured. The reason I didn't like this book was because the Baudelaires felt so unhappy at the end of this book. Of course they have to say good bye to their friends sometimes, like, unfortunately in this series, always happens. But overall, I really liked this book.
Rating: Summary: Funny and dismal: The best book in the series! Review: The Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Sunny, and Klaus, are still on the run from the evil Count Olaf when Mr. Poe, a banker that isn't doing a very good job finding them appropriate legal guardians, sends them to Prufrock Academy. They quickly learn that this school is a very Austere Academy. Because they are orphan they are forced to live in an orphan shack, a tiny little tin hut with tiny human biting crabs and drippy fungus on the ceiling. Violet and Klaus must attend boring classes and since Sunny is too young to go to school, she is made an administrative assistant. To make matters worse Count Olaf is back in the disguise of a gym teacher and he has horrible schemes planned for them. The orphans cannot defeat him on their own but maybe with the help of a new pair of orphans they can. But don't think that this book has a happy ending. This book is definitely the best so far of the series. Bigger story arcs are starting to develop and new characters have appeared. Strangely enough my favorite part of this book is a page in a half section where the author starts to tell the readers how he and his deceased wife Beatrice are connected to the evil Count Olaf. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I recommend this book to all fans of a Series of Unfortunate Events.

Rating: Summary: The Austere Academy Review: I just finished the 5th book in the series. I enjoyed this book so much that I read chapter after chapter. I liked that the Beaudalaires finally had some friends. But it was terrible what happened to their friends. And I thought Mr. Poe was really stupid how he didn't see Count Olaf anywhere and he escaped again! And will probably escape again and again and again! I think any kid who likes weird & exciting books will love this series.
