Rating: Summary: Gothic fun! Review: I've read the first book "The Bad Beginning" and this book. Mr. Snicket has definitely improved as he goes along. While in the first book I was sometimes annoyed by his pedantic asides, in this one they made me laugh! The narrator's story is often more interesting than that of the Baudelaire orphans. He gives out hints about himself, making me wonder how on earth, for example, Mr. Snicket came to be chased by a group of torch-bearing villagers, or why (from the first book) he is not allowed within five miles of my town. Why is he compelled to research the siblings and share their story with the world? We're given to know in this book that the tale is told at a distant remove in the future, although between Gothic elements and modern-day conveniences (computers and cars are mentioned but not television?) it's hard to say exactly where, or when, the story takes place. The orphans' situation is dismal but in a hilarious way. They are made to live in a tin shack inhabited by little toe-biting crabs and drippy tan fungus! Sunny (a baby!) is to do administrative assistant (a.k.a. secretarial) work and, when she runs out of staples, must make her own! And, lest we forget, Count Olaf returns to make their lives miserable, in a ridiculous disguise that only the Beaudelaire orphans can see through. The Beaudelaire orphans meet some new friends in this book, the Quagmire triplets--two of them anyway, since the third, well, it's too sad to tell, read the book. In a world of menacing, incompetent, or annoying adults, these clever, kind children win the day...until the unhappy (but still funny) cliffhanger ending which leads us in to Book the Sixth, "The Ersatz Elevator." While the first book didn't enchant me, this one was great fun and I plan to pick up as many of the series as I can! I'm looking forward to reading Book the Seventh, "The Vile Village" and all the rest of the Beaudelaire orphans' adventures that I've missed.
Rating: Summary: The Start of a Thrilling NEW mytery! Review: I started this series with THE REPTILE ROOM and have been a fan of these books ever since. So when I say, "I love this series! Read it! Read it!" I'm not just saying it because everyone elce is reading it. In fact, most of my friends think it's too boring and confusing to read. But those warning notes in the begining make me want to read them even more. AUSTERE ACADAMY is the only book in the series where I got bored for a few minutes. I can't tell you why, but it involves Count Olf and S.O.R.E. (Special Orphan Running Exercises.) But the one boring five or two minutes is made up for with the part at the end where a clue is left that leaves you hankering for the next eight books...
Rating: Summary: The Austere Academy Review: This book is undoubtedly the best book about the Baudelaire orphans yet. In this book, the orphans Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are forced to attend boarding school by the unhelpful banker who is in charge of their parent's affairs Mr. Poe. When they get to the school, they become a little reluctant to enter it. The buildings are shaped like gravestones and the motto is 'remember you will die'. Luckily, they meet some friends: Duncan and Isadora Quagmire. They are identical triplets and their parents and third triplet Quigley died in a fire. This school has terrible rules, mean punishments, bad violin playing, and Carmelita Spats. Definetly 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, and the best Baudelaire book ever.
Rating: Summary: Watch Your Step! Review: I think this is a great book. I gave it a five star review. I would recommend this book to people who like sad fictional stories it's a very exciting story I enjoyed reading it a lot!!!ue When I read it couldn't put it down! I think anyone in the age of 6-17 would enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Books I ever read Review: The Baudelaire's once again come across a horrable fate. They are sent to a bording school called Prufrock Prep. with the motto Remember you will dy. And you might have guessed it they come across Count Olaf who protends to be the new coach. It is a good book and you will like it. Sincerely, A Limony Snicket Fan
Rating: Summary: The best in the series so far!! Review: This book was the most HILARIOUS of all!! It was also the saddest. The Baudelaires finally meet some kind and generous people, the Quagmires. Vice Principal Nero, the vice principal of Prufrock Preperatory School, has tons of absurd rules for everything, such as, if you don't come to a meal on time, you get your silverware taken away from you. It is outrageously funny. The Quagmire triplets are the Baudelaires only true friends, but then at the end--it'd ruin the book, so I won't tell you. Read it to find out what happens!
Rating: Summary: Stop reading this series now! Review: That's it! I'm done reading this series to my Fifth Grade class. Teaching in a school that has over 50% free or reduced meals, the last thing my charges need to hear are the unfortunate events of some kids who will be wealthy sometime in the "future". When will the future happen? Is the author going to write these inane and improbable stories forever without any end in sight? In what year (real time) will Violet become of age? I don't know. If the author would let us know when these unfortunate events are going to end, then maybe my students and I will hang in there. Without a timeline, we're outta here.
Rating: Summary: A 15-Year-Old Who Would Like To Share Some Comments... Review: Oh! I hate Count Olaf!! I hope he gets caught, and even though I know that he won't get his hands on the fortune, he comes so close that it's scary!! Oh dear!! Oh dear!! Oh dear!! I would also like to say that the Bauldaire children are very smart and I just want to slap Mr. Poe upside the head for not believing them, even though they always end up being right!! I can't wait for the next book, because this one left me clamoring for more!!
Rating: Summary: The Austere Academy Review: This is a GREAT book! Out of all the the books by Limony Snicket that is the best.It kinda leaves you handing at the end before their friends are captured they yell V.F.D. and the Baudelaires say before they dy they will find out what they ment. It's the best book I ever read and I can't wait til the 6th.
