Summary: How disappointed was I? Let me count the ways...
Review: I expected a story about a woman and her grandmother, and I found instead a story about a couple who BOTH needed help. It was wonderful that Sierra found her faith, but taking back her cheating husband is absurd. He wasn't worth it!! Don't read this book if you want something touching; do read it if you like mindless drivel.

Summary: Absolutely only ok
Review: Whie this book was not thoroughly riveting, it was also good enough to keep reading and not relegate to the bin. I found the Oregon Trail part of the story rather uninteresting and often thought of just skipping it but I was glad that I didn't as it tied in so well at the end. What can I say about Sierra? I just wanted to slap her. I felt very sorry for her husband to have such a whining wife who was never content with anything he did and only thought of her own happiness. Overall the book was a nice easy read but I don't think I'd rush out and recommend it to anyone.

Summary: Typically Excellent Story by Ms. Rivers
Review: As usual, Ms. Rivers brings to life interesting and lovable characters in real-life situations. The neat thing about this book was the parallel between a modern-day '90's woman and her ancestor who crossed the country in a covered wagon in the 1800's. Biblical lessons can be learned from this wonderful story.

Summary: I don't know what the person under me was thinking!
Review: The person under me who put down a 6 doesn't know what he's talking about! I'm not usually this foward...okay, I'm NEVER this foward, but I have to say my part. It is very true, this book isn't like her other works; she is dealing with the here and now, not ancient times. This book is so very true, and it's one of my favorites by her. I am not one for sappy love stories; they make me sick, especially when the woman does whatever the man says. In this book you see not a sappy woman but a woman torn; she loves the man she married, but is embittered by his decisions without her. And when he betrays her, I personally felt ready to kill him. I URGE you to read this book! This book is one in a million for all ages! I believe that this book ranks up there with her Mark of the Lion series. It's truly a masterpiece.

Summary: Good, not great, but good
Review: I was kind of disappointed with this book because when I read Rivers' other books(Mark of the Lion series) I was so involved in all of the characters. In The Scarlet Thread I couldn't seem to get into it...I couldn't see eye to eye with all the characters like Rivers' other books. But if I hadn't expected something better I would definitely have enjoyed it more.

Summary: Many of our lives have a "Scarlet Thread"
Review: The romance of pioneer spirits that many of us enjoy reading about make this book, not only very relevant and current but a wonderful positive message also. We see the bridge of generations connected, through the quilt, of those that have left far greater legacies than money ever will. A sense of strength in difficulty, values that never change. This is the first work I read of Francine Rivers and have since read her new book, Atonement Child and provided copies for my two daughters, 17 and 20. This is the type of book that we can each read and find something relevant to our world of 1997, revisit the romance of the early 1900's and bridge culture, social, economic and spiritual diversity for all.

Summary: The thread of genius in historical Christian fiction!
Review: Fans of Francine Rivers will be delighted to find the theme of God's love in a new setting. I found the scene shifts to be distracting, but in every other way the characters and story were as riveting as Rivers' other books. To read a love story that causes you to come away with new determination to love God and your fellow man with greater intensity is a lofty, yet well-acheived goal for this novel. One wonders if there are real people who lived these events. As the story unfolds, the characters prayers and scripture quotation answers readily demonstrate how one can "pray without ceasing." I will never again resist the effort needed to memorize verses.

Summary: Heartwarming! A spiritual journey of two women.
Review: Their journeys intertwine. Sierra travels a freeway to LA, Mary Kathryn a trail to Oregon. The trunk belonged to Mary Kathryn McMurray. Inside lay a journal and a wedding quilt. Sierra's mother said, "One day it will come to you like a star bursting in the heavens. And what a day that will be!" She studied the quilt, her fingers tracing the scarlet thread that held all the pieces together--and understood. Both women discover that God loves them very much and he is watching over them. On both their journeys they face hardships and losses. They discover that God will never leave them nor forsake them. God allowed her to go through all those things so that she would come to him. Once she did, she saw the wonder of all of it

Summary: Surprisingly good
Review: After reading some Christian fiction that seemed overly "preachy," I have to admit being sceptical before picking up this book. However, this book was delightful! It was weighty, meaning the author did not shrink from exploring the heavier issues of infidelity, sex, personal responsiblity, the choices we make. The relationship between Sierra and Alex was enlightening, with all its complexities and nuances, and mostly, its human-ness. This is excellent reading as nothing is "glossed over" and there are no easy answers as we watch Sierra and her husband grapple with real-world issues in their marriage. I would highly recommend this book, as it will bring up important questions in your own life to think about. I can't wait to read more of Francine Rivers.
