Rating: Summary: Outstanding for General Reading Review: I really love the NLT for reading and comparison with other translations when studying. There is a wonderful flow to the Biblical narratives that I have not found in any other translation except perhaps the REB. I use the NLT nearly everyday. The only thing I do not like about it is that it uses a red letter text in the NT. I find, now and then, that this makes the reading of the text a little more difficult under certain forms of artificial light. I much prefer black letter for that reason-I find red letter an intrusion into the text anyway, but that puts me in the minority! If you are familiar or very unfamiliar with the Bible use this version. It is great and you will not regret it. It is being revised and will continue to gain many readers over the next ten years.
Rating: Summary: Inspiriational! Review: I received this book as a gift, and what a blessing! The book is beautiful-- from the binding and font used for the text, to the illustrations and the readability of this version of the Bible.I read through all of 1st and 2nd Samuel in this Bible, and not only was it exciting and easy to understand, but the illustrations really added to the mood of the stories. If you are looking for a readable version of the Holy Bible, this would be a great choice.
Rating: Summary: Great compact, beautiful bible! Review: I recommend this bible to anyone who's looking for an easy to understand translation. If something is comprehendible, you will obtain a great interest in reading it until the end. I have never sat down and read the bible until now. I enjoy reading it very much. If you get the bonded leather or genuine leather, it's truly a beautiful book to keep for years and years and to pass on to the future. A great and worthy investment! I bought the Genuine Leather with Thumb Indexed and even had my name inscripted on the front cover. It's so beautiful, I love to show it off. Not only the outside is lovely but of course it has that inner beauty. It's also small and convenient to carry around especially when bringing it to church or taking it on the road. I plan to purchase another one of these as a gift for my younger sister.
Rating: Summary: A Nice Translation Review: I started reading the New Living Translation while working through an upper level course on Greek exegesis. I was simply looking for a version that emphasized a sentence-by-sentence translation as opposed to a word-for-word translation (because I was required to do this type of translating for my assignments). I was pleasantly surprised with the NLT. It is a very impressive work, and makes for very smooth reading. The translation team also made the wise decision to translate the dates in the text into their modern equivalents. So, whereas previous translations might read that a certain event happened in, say, the twelfth year of a certain king, the NLT will (based on historical data) read that it happened in "586 BC" or "on April 22nd, 722 BC" They have also done the same thing with other forms of measurement (including currency, weight, and time). This makes the events seem much easier to relate to.
For these reasons (and others too) I think this is a really good version. So, if you are looking for a translation that focuses more on the overall meaning of each sentence, and not just the meaning of each word, I heartily recommend this one.
Rating: Summary: Would not recommend. Review: I was very disappointed when I opened this Bible. It is not what it claims. If you are looking for a "Large Print" Bible, this is NOT it! Otherwise, it is fine, with colorful maps and helpful subject matter.
Rating: Summary: Easy to understand Review: I've been a believer for about 2 years now. I found New Living Translation to be very easy to understand. I am using NLT more and more during my prayer time. For my personal bible study, I still use my New International Version translation (NIV). I also keep my English Standard Version (ESV) bible nearby during my study hours.
Rating: Summary: Perfect for new believers!!! Review: If your new to christ and want to be able to understand easily, then get this version. While the NLT may not be the best bible to take to church, It is EXCELLENT to just sit down and read and get a good grasp on what the bible is all about. The beginning of each book tells when it was written, who wrote it and what it is basically about. In the back you can look up versus that pertain to a particular matter like (alcoholism, sex, depression etc...) and read what god has to say about it. After reading this version im able to understand different versions much like NKJV or KJV much better. Give it a try, I think youll like it. Hope this helped
Rating: Summary: It reads like a dream, but.... Review: It's a dream to read. Pity it alters so much of the text of the Bible in order conform to PC "femspeak" and to soften its consistent patriarchy. If it weren't for this it would be an excellent dynamic equivalent translation.
Rating: Summary: New Living Translation: The perfect way to start your day! Review: My friend recently purchased a Bible (New Living Translation) and allowed me to exchange my Bible (New King James Version) with hers. I am an instructor in a Seminary and therefore very picky with the versions I choose to read. I usually prefer either the New American Standard or the New Revised Standard Versions. However, I found the NLT to be an inviting one. While I was sharing my experience with the NLT with my other friends, one of them, Karen Davila, who is a popular, award-winning, television journalist here in Manila, Philippines (GMA-Channel 7) mentioned how pleasant it was to read the NLT. It was a '...perfect way to start your day...' A few of my students who are freshmen enjoy the version too. I will request our Library that we acquire a few copies. A colleague of mine is thinking of purchasing one. Frankly, I probably would go back to NRSV/NASB when I teach or write, primarily for the reason that they are much closer to the original languages. But, for daily quiet time and while keeping my journal, the NLT looks like an appropriate choice. I thank the Lord for all those who invested their time and efforts in giving all of us the NLT. God bless you.
Rating: Summary: Small steps away from Biblical Truth Review: Slowly but surely we move toward a Bible which doesn't have anything to do with the truth contained in the original hebrew and greek texts. Things that are important are blurred over and the feel good stuff is emphasized. I actually owned one of these so called translations. I soon realized I could not live with such a distortion of God's truth. So I filed it away in the circular file, I would feel really bad if someone else got a hold of it and came to God based on this farce.
