Summary: Hit Her With Your Worst Shot
Review: How could anyone publish such an unnecessary book? If this is Mr. Oppenheimer's best weapon to try to bring down Hillary and stifle her bid for the US Senate, he has failed and miserably so. His approach is cunning yet his execution falls flat. This book serves only to confirm what we all already know--that Mrs. Clinton will win the election come November.

Summary: Bravo
Review: However one feels about the Clintons, or The National Enquirer, or all the hoopla, this book is a must read, and must be read with an open mind. Like many, I too was skeptical, but once I got started, found I could not put it down. The writing is fast-paced, detailed and brilliant. I am surprised to learn that this author has written other (albeit unauthorized) biographies, all highly reviewed, and I look forward to reading more of his work.

Summary: FACTUAL MASTERPIECE!
Review: I am stunned at some of the negative reviews about this well-written masterpiece. The author did a great job in his research and is only quoting some of Clinton's good buddies of the past. It is unfortunate that 50% of the country have had their head in the sand for the past 8 years and don't want to read or hear about how sleazy their two icons are.Maybe that is why our country although rich, has suffered from moral and ethical decay, over these past 8 years. With people, especially the liberal media looking up to these 2 ...,no wonder there is apathy among the mainstream regarding politics and everything else.

Summary: Is This The Straw That Broke The Proverbial Camel's Back?
Review: I am writing these comments in the early part of August. The real question, though, is how will this book be perceived the day after the national election in November. It is virtually certain, whether it's fair or not, that Hillary Clinton's attempt to become New York's next U.S. Senator has been destroyed by the charge of an anti-Semitic remark of over two decades ago. Is it true? Also, even if the accusation is accurate, does Mrs. Clinton deserve forgiveness? One could engage in much abstract speculation and moral inquiry into the larger issues of Hillary Clinton's predicament. Nevertheless, in the practical realm, she is in dire straits. The First Lady needs solid and overwhelming Jewish support if she is to have any realistic chance against her Republican challenger, Rick Lazio. Recent polls already indicate that Hillary Clinton is unlikely to regain the trust of a sufficient number of Jewish voters to salvage her campaign.

I am uncomfortable that there are not more witnesses to confirm this allegation. Yet, isn't Jerry Oppenheimer simply doing his job? Some people will question Oppenheimer's credibility because of his National Enquirer past. That argument is simply fallacious. The National Enquirer is admittedly a scandal sheet, but it is still highly regarded for meticulously and thoroughly double checking facts before approving them for print. A former campaign worker has gone on record with his incendiary claims. How can the media not report the story? Shouldn't we be outraged if these charges were ignored? I think that a fair and objective person, regardless of how they feel towards Hillary Clinton, must conclude that the media are placed before a rock and hard place when forced to decide how to handle such a dilemma. The reader may notice that I am ignoring the other aspects of Oppenheimer's book. I am doing so because in the long run the anti-Semitic charge is the only reason why it will be remembered. Historians may very well refer to this book as the one that demolished the Clinton family's last hope for political and perhaps even personal redemption. The impact of this book far outweighs its intrinsic value. I am sure that we will still be discussing it many years into the future.

Summary: Forget about the slur controversy, read this book
Review: I disagree with the negative reviews. I read this book and was totally fascinated with the level of insight this book reveals for both the Clintons. My advice -- forget about the slur controversy, read this book, you won't believe what you find out.

Summary: Not a hatchet job
Review: I first saw this book referenced in Michael Tomasky's Hillary's Turn. Tomasky described this book as a hatchet job. State of a Union is far from a negative attack on the former First Couple, and actually paints a more sympathetic portrait of the Clintons than their most fawning sycophants usually do. State of a Union is little more than fluff but gives a good overview of a complex and nuanced political partnership. Jerry Oppenheimer manages to give childhood and marital details without dabbling in pure psychobabble, but this is a beach book and not history---and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

Summary: This book answers the question -- who is she?
Review: I have just finished reading this book and think it is terrific -- in fact, I am buying several copies and passing them on to my friends.

I have often wondered what drives Mrs. (and Mr., for that matter) Clinton, what is her background (beyond the much lauded Wellesley Commencement speech), and where did she come from? Oppenheimer's book answered all my questions handily. Although I am a lifelong Democrat and inveterate newshound, I find I do not know all that much about Mrs. Clinton or her past. And if she is going to attempt to be the next Senator from New York, I think we owe it to ourselves to find out what she believes in and what she hopes to accomplish.

Although some of the incidents have been covered ad nauseum (hello -- Monica!) in the past, Oppenheimer does a more than skillful (and, I think, fair handed) job in revealing Mrs. Clinton's family, her relationship with her husband (boy, there's an interesting relationship)and what she hopes to "do" for us, the public. Now, why Mrs. Clinton feels compelled to do anything for us at all, or even if we want her to, is another matter -- and one which Oppenheimer fully explores.

Don't listen to all the spin doctors on the television set. Whether you admire or dislike Mrs. Clinton, you owe it to yourself to check out this bio and find out the truth about her, then make up your own mind.

Summary: All's Fair in Love and ....
Review: I imagine some of the First Lady's New York senatorial campaign boosters will find this book offensive and perhaps invasive, however Mr. Oppenheimer's candid discussion on a topic that has fascinated the nation for the last eight years is a good read filled with pertinent information that is obviously the fruit of zealous investigation. Perhaps, we as Americans, should not be so concerned with the private lives of public figures, but right or wrong, we are. In the blow-dryed, speech-written, sound-byte-ridden realm of contemporary politics, perhaps these illicit windows into the bedrooms and Oval Offices of our elected provide the only real glimpse of a candidate or official. It seems that news articles are written by spin doctors who feed reporters press releases that reflect only the p.c. portion of a candidate's background, record, intentions, etc. Maybe only independent research such as Mr. Oppenheimer's can deliver the truth. Those who chasitse Oppenheimer's bold portrayal of the First Marriage either missed the passage in the Bill of Rights about free and unfettered speech, harken for the days of Kennedy's Camelot and public ignorance into the lives of those who rule/govern our country or simply want a Chicago Cubs fan to sit in a New York Senate seat.

Summary: An Unexpected Pleasure...
Review: I liked this book. In fact, I really liked this book. Rather than being gossip column drivel, I found it objective, intelligent and refreshing in both its content and approach. If this (prolific) author is to be discredited on the basis of his link to The National Enquirer, let's not forget that Clinton's own counsel, David Kendall, is also The National Enquirer's lawyer. This detail did not stop Kendall from being chosen as the president's top attorney and in fact, may have worked in his favor, since much of the Clinton presidency has turned out to be a tabloid sideshow. Well done Mr. Oppenheimer, and two thumbs up.

Summary: A well researched book worth the wait
Review: I read "State of a Union" from cover-to-cover the day it arrived. This book is well researched and includes notes, sources and an index. It is very well written in the best investigative reporting sense and coverage is objective and fairly well balanced between Hillary and Bill Clinton. There are many quotations from family, friends, news reporters, campaign staff workers as well as enemies and detractors. Coverage begins with their ancestral roots, through childhood, education, rise to power in Arkansas and nationally, through the scandals and up to Hillary's bid for the Senate.
