If you like a good story, captivating characters and wonderful descriptive writing you definitely need to buy Eddie's Bastard. Growing up alone with an alcoholic grandfather and never knowing either one of his parents this child seems destined for failure but is anything but. He conquers his fears and leads a wonderful life. You'll see, read it and enjoy!!
Rating: Summary: Beautifully written novel! Review: "Eddie's Bastard" is a fabulous book about a young man's unconventional upbringing. I told my family about how great this book was and I was only on page 19! I never needed to use a bookmark because I remembered exactly what page to return to (a definite first for me)! The descriptive scenes simply glowed and I never skimmed a paragraph. I can't wait for the sequel "Somewhere South of Here" to come out in paperback. Today is the first day without this novel to look forward to and I am going through withdrawals. I purchased two new books today ("Laura" by Larry Watson and "White Oleander" by Janet Fitch). If either one of these two new novels are even half as engrossing and lovely as "Eddie's Bastard", I will be a happy reader. This novel would make a fantastic movie but the name might need to be modified. My children kept asking me "Hey, mom, how's Eddie's bastard?" and chuckling. I love to read and I loved this book!
Rating: Summary: I've never been more emotionally involved in a book... Review: I began reading this novel simply because I knew the author. What became of it had nothing to do with that friendship. I was completely entralled by Kowalski's writing style. "Eddie's Bastard" was as easy to read as it was enjoyable. If you haven't read his book yet, pick up a copy. When you are done buy "Somewhere South of Here", the sequal. You will not be dissapointed. The life of Billy Mann will become your life.
Rating: Summary: Fun, heartwarming, and entertaining coming of age story Review: Very good read. Engaging. The right mix of tragedy and victory. Certainly leaves the door open to a sequel, which the author is planning to publish this year. The quirky tales woven into the book gave it lots of flavor. You'll love kocking this one out during your beach vacation this summer.
Rating: Summary: One of the best! Review: I could not put this book down. While the book title has a lot to be desired, this novel grabs the reader from page one. I cannot wait to share this story with other avid book readers.
Rating: Summary: Very good, but too sweet Review: Pleasant story about a boy who grows up and gradually comes to know about his origins. There is something very refreshing in the way this book is written; the prose is very straightforward as we see it through the eyes of Eddie, the novel's hero. My only complaint is that the novel seems too upbeat and unrealistic at times: Eddie seems to be unaffected by his grandfather's alcoholism, which gets worse as the story progresses. Also, his grandfather seems to recover with no particular difficulties. Eddie also seems much too balanced and perfect for the kind of life he lives, with no friends or parents. And it's not enough just being a Mann...Still, if you happen to come across this book, give it a go. I'm looking foward to reading the sequel.
Rating: Summary: a great surprise! Review: I don't know why I picked up this book;it was not the type of book I usually read. Thank goodness I did! It was one of the VERY best books I've read and I was sad when I got to the last page. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone!
Rating: Summary: simply wonderful Review: I really didn't want this book to end. The storytelling is so amazing and addictive! The characters are rich, beautiful, and tragic. Stories like this one remind us how strange and wonderful life can be all at once. Read this!
Rating: Summary: A grand book Review: What a terrific read, from the very first word to the very last period. Not a misstep anywhere. I laughed out loud, I cried, I passed it on to friends who loved it too. Don't miss this one!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful coming of age novel Review: A story of warmth and sensitivity, which I found hard to put down and which I didn't want to end. Sprinkled with likeable characters - some rather eccentric. An interesting tale where you get caught up in the life of the Manns and where you do care whether Billy finds out the identity of his mother. This is a beautifully crafted book which I highly recommend. I trust this debut novel is the first of many for this talented writer.
