Rating: Summary: Moot point Review: Buy this for a good laugh. More nonsense about the apocalypse that never was.

Rating: Summary: A brief easily understood primer on y2k and how to prepare Review: I have known about the Millennium Bug since the late 1960s when I was Chief of Information Systems Development at the US State Department's Agency for International Development. Like many others of my generation, I always thought that it would all have been fixed long before now. It hasn't been and the global economy and the technologies upon which it depends are now in for a nasty patch - far more than a "bump in the road" and far less than the "end of Western Civilization". Since the winter of 97/98, I have been writing a weekly Internet column , Digital States & Associations, on the Westergaard Year 2000 webzine. I have been spoken on y2k at many national conferences of elected and appointed govenment officials. Those reading my columns and hearing my talks commonly ask, as they become aware of y2k,"How do I learn more" and "What can we do?". My usual response is to recommend a book, because many are not on the Web. But, while there are many excellent books on y2k that run 300 or 400 pages, I could find nothing easily obtainable in bookstores that was a brief, easily grasped, non-technical primer that answered these questions clearly. My wife was adamant that in order to be useful to the general public such a book should be inexpensive ($10.95 undiscounted) and readable in less than two hours. It should guide readers through the y2k thicket, enable them to grasp its varied implications, and provide an action plan on how to further their education (key books and websites) and prepare (checklists, things to consider acquiring, where to acquire them, and other actions to take).. If you are not on the Net, you aren't in the know on y2k. The book was written for both those on the web as a hard copy resource how-to book, and also for those among your friends and relatives who are not on the Web who could benefit from reading such a book. My friend, Ed Yourdon, said of Y2K:An Action Plan that it is a "cogent collection of practical material in a concise easily readable form". My hope is that my readers will agree and act upon what I have written.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious! Review: I loved this book. I think I'm going to collect these things. I bought it around March 2000, and it has replaced 1984 as my favorite book of all time. A must read! It's not too informative, but what the author lacks in knowledge and technical expertise he more than makes up for in pure humor. Of course, He wasn't trying to be funny, but that's only a minor failing...

Rating: Summary: Contains simple, straightforward, useful information. Review: I recommend this book to anyone with concerns about Y2K. It contains simple, straightforward, easy-to-use information arranged in an easy-to-navigate format. Included are lists of a variety of survivial materials and supplies from foods, clothing and bedding to medicines, repair materials, heating supplies, and so on. These lists would be useful for many other kinds of emergencies and would help in disaster preparedness. I plan to buy copies for my family members.
Rating: Summary: Wake up! Review: Mr Porlier's book offers a brief overview for the layman who knows little. Unfortunately, there are still many people who are completely oblivious to this impending problem; And unfortunately, these are the people who will, most likely, exacerbate this problem when Jan. 1, 2000 finally arrives and the ignorant are not prepared. He introduces peacful strategies for dealing with the uninitiated and unequipped among us (and there will be many) like bartering and services rendered in exchange for food and other necessities. Most of us, children of the computer age, have no idea what life would be like without technology and regardless of the differing opinions of those supposedly 'in the know', we should all be prepared!
Rating: Summary: Well, I read it. Review: My son encouraged me to read this prior to the Y2K thing. It was interesting and I did some preparation such as water, candles, and a full cupboard. But, basically, I found this to be a little too radical for my taste. Of course, when 1-1-2000/1-1-2001 passed, I felt a little smug when compared to my friends who were a wreck about "what could happen" if all the computers crashed, etc. If you are into being self sufficient, read it. Otherwise, pass it on to someone else who can tell you about it when they are done.

Rating: Summary: weak for a consumer guide Review: Not impressed. There are better resources out there than this one. Found it too general to be really useful. Keep looking.
