Rating: Summary: One of the best books out there! 5 stars easily Review: This book brought a true plot and a perfect setting. I didn't think it was that scary, just deeply interesting and mysterious. Although the ending could of used some work, the book was definitly a realistic horror.
Rating: Summary: Scary, Exciting... What can I say but, WOW!! Review: This novel was an extremly exciting, and fastinating read, with all the plot twists that you could possibly think of. It is probably the most riviting book that I have ever read! The thought of Biological weapons, and PURPOSELY making viruses, just blows my mind. It really makes you think that, maybe we are due for another epidemic like the Plague. It makes you look at life in a different way, and realize that this could really happen to you or someone you know, and that just sends a shiver up the spine. This novel could not have possibly been better, in my oppinion, and I now hope to read many more of Prestons works. THIS NOVEL WILL MAKE IT SO THAT YOU NEVER WANT TO LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT A GAS MASK ON!!
Rating: Summary: A quick read offering a frightening glimpse of reality. Review: Although the plot is forced at times to carry a load of information, this book brings to light a very real danger facing our world today. The characters are a bit shallow and undeveloped, but the detailed science truly makes up for it if that's your thing. The prose is lucid and comprehensible even for non-scientists. Read it, and you'll be seen in public wearing a HEPA mask and washing your hands in bleach!!!
Rating: Summary: An author he's not Review: If the book was sold as a technical exercise in biological warefare, then I could accept what was written as well put. However, the book was marketed as a suspense thriller and came off as a documentary. I'm disturbed that the publishing industry used his Hot Zone claim to fame, I did read this as well and recommend it, to sell a novel that comes off as a weakly plotted and poorly developed cast of characters around what should have billed as a fictional documentary. I will admit that the technical details of Cobra were interesting, but I would recommend a library visit before a buy.
Rating: Summary: Could have been better Review: I agree with most of the negative reviews for this book. I was immensely disappointed with the writing style that Preston used. It read more like a science text book than a thriller. Unfortunately, there were times when a science text actually would have been more interesting. I appreciate that Preston felt he needed to take time out to explain the terminology he was using and the techniques the villain used to create the virus, but sometime he just went too far. Was it actually necessary to explain that a knish (one of the characters was eating it) is a small potato pastry? Sometimes there is such a thing as too much detail. After reading that Preston was journalist before becoming a fiction writer, I could see why he wrote the way he did. I think he needs a bit more practice before he actually can make a name for himself in the world of fiction.
Rating: Summary: Stay up late! The ending is llooonnnnnggg. Review: A very scarey novel on biological warfare. Preston does what he does best... scare the hell out of people. I think my fear of the plot becoming a reality is what kept me riveted. I only wish I knew what was based on fact and what wasn't. Don't start the last half late at night-- it tends to drag on... and on. Altogether a good read though.
Rating: Summary: Best Medical thriller i've read in a long, long time Review: I quote,"He is like Robin Cook on steroids."
Rating: Summary: SSSCCCAAARRRYYY!!!!!!! Review: I LOVED IT!!!!!!! A great suspense, really kicks butt!!!!! frightened the heellll out of me!!! It was worth reading!
Rating: Summary: A GREAT Book!!! Review: I had read the Hot Zone at my own home before, and I thought that nothing better about viruses could come out. I was wrong! At camp, my counselor had The Cobra Event. I started reading it, and got hooked. It took me less than 4 hours to read it! An amazing book if there ever was one!
Rating: Summary: Definitely read this one! Review: Richard Preston manages, yet again, to present scientific information in a manner that flows well within a story. His historical background is presented in an interesting way, and he links his characters to those events in such a way as to make it all seem more connected. As with "The Hot Zone", the technical information is presented with just enough detail to be understood without slowing the pace of the story. The most frightening part of this novel is that he makes his readers understand that this is not just science fiction, and that there is a real possibility that such an event could occur in the near future. This book should be required reading in every high school biology class.
