Summary: Entertaining to say the least
Review: Although it gets off to a rocky, "unscary" start, the Blackstone Chronicles is truly an amazing collection. The town of Blackstone's past begins to mercilessly haunt its present-day citizens as odd objects appear in their homes. Tale by tale, the tension begins to build and suspense is delightfully unbearable at some points in the story. Although the first three chronicles have shaky plots and boring characters, the final ones are a stark contrast. If nothing else, the innocent romance that develops between the characters Oliver and Rebeccas is very sweet, and adds to the texture of the Chronicles. I highly recommend this book to anyone, and anyone reading it should NOT be discouraged by the dullness of the first stories.

Review: Whew! What a read - could not put the book down! I'm sorry I didn't read it when the book was first published 'one chapter at a time'...... I can imagine the anticipation of when the next one hit the shelves! But hey at leat I got to read it all in one sitting!

Summary: BC good, finale not so.
Review: One hates to give repeated bad reviews of a particular author because after a while one resents any future work without having read it. So let us get to it.

At first I was entranced by the rich atmosphere and strong historical background to the asylum. It was properly eerie and densely packed with all the right elements of pathos and horror. Yet it started petering out, and to an entirely unsatisfying conclusion, towards the end. Better use could have been given to this hidden priest, yet the conclusion by the author of who had dropped off each cursed object was not credible nor clever. This book was also something that repeated the threadbare premise of The Cursed Object(s), a premise that should not have been resurrected so soon.

Review: John Saul is clearly among the many great writers to date. Saul knows what his readers want.

Summary: very captivating...
Review: This book certainly kept me reading, interested for more, and certainly in suspense, much more so than certain efforts by certain other authors in this genre. The author uses excellent language to convey a sense of sheer terror, which is all the more unsettling because it is real, or at least has the potential to be. Saul has derived his horror from something so normal.

Summary: Lots of fun, but flawed ending
Review: I read this in the original serial form, and it was lots of fun. I love horror stories about horror connected to inanimate objects, such as dolls and necklaces. Also, I love horror stories that make me feel sympathetic for characters who were mistreated by people who should've loved them.

This reminded me of the books of this type I used to read in high school -- except that it was better written. The characters are much more memorable.

However, I think the story fizzled out in the last couple of editions of the the serial. The ending wasn't as good as it could have been.

I had even more fun with the publisher's original "Blackstone Chronicles" web site. Especially the diner!

Summary: A good read
Review: John Saul does a good job with this serial, and developing his characters. The town of Blackstone doesn't take much imagination to make it seem real and one has to wonder what kind of atrocities might have been comitted in the early days when people were committed to asylums and forgotten. I enjoyed this book as much as The Green Mile by King.

Summary: never read
Review: oh, come on. We all know that saul is better than king. king gets boring every time i try to read his books, but saul keeps me coming back for more. and i'm pretty sure that i would love this book. i only got past page fifteen in the green mile, and once again king continues to be a total disappointment.

Summary: A strong contestant to become a classic in horror literature
Review: After playing the game of that books,I've developed a taste for psychology horror. Those books are a real killer! As a student in Englsh Literature,I can easily say that it can become a classic!

Summary: good book...great use of series rollout
Review: John Saul does a wonderful job of keeping the story lines consistent across all six parts. The story zigs when you expect it to zag, which kept my interest throughout. For anyone who has read Stephen King's "The Green Mile" series, this one ranks right up there.
