Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: I go to a small high school where books of such language and context are almost forbidden. Although a lot of us go through things here like Precious did, the book was almost exiled from my library because of the language. I got curious and read it. Despite the language, this was the best book I have EVER read. The language and mis-spellings give an incite on how Precious lived. I thought this was a non-fiction book until I saw the FIC on the side. It was just an amazing story. I read it in a few hours, I couldn't put it down. I'm reading it for the 4th time right now. This book should be given A LOT more credit from adults (not saying all disagree with this book). I HIGHLY recommend it!!
Rating: Summary: Read deep and time for change Review: I have not read PUSH yet, I was just shopping for it. I found the reviews...almost more than I wanted to know. I have just finished read THE COLDEST WINTER EVER. My co-worker told me of PUSH. Emotions I felt just reading the review takes me to other things going on in the world and in my community that I know I can help make a difference. PUSH gives me the push I need to help inspire and change things. I can't wait for delivery I am going to the book store today!!
Rating: Summary: Deep and Disturbing! Review: It's a rarity anymore when I can say "That novel left me speechless" but that's EXACTLY how I felt by the end of this book! With each page, I felt more and more (mostly sadness) for her problems in life and as well as for her illiteracy. I was very happy to see someone (her teacher) FINALLY stand up to her and make her learn how to read and write. This book goes from sad to sadder to saddest by the end, but seeing that Precious learned how to read and write somehow made this book that much more bearable. To say I couldn't put this book down would have been a major understatement! I was shocked and amazed with practically each page I turned from page 1 to the end. Deep and disturbing but definitely a must-read if I've ever read one!
Rating: Summary: Disturbing and Discomforting Review: Push is a disturbing and discomforting story which takes us out of our comfort zone. Precious Jones has never really had a childhood. Unfortunately she was abused at an early age by her overweight and trifling mother as well as her father. Sexual, Physical and Emotional abuse were all first hand experiences for Precious. The acts that her mother and father performed on her were beyond terrible. Why didn't anyone step in and take Precious from the horrific environment she lived in? After all, when Precious' child was born her grandmother stepped in to raise that child. Push's storyline is not a pretty picture; it's brutal, it's realistic and its raw. It's not a story for everyone but for those who like poignant and riveting reads written in a simple manner but filled with wonderful prose then Push by Sapphire is a must read.
Rating: Summary: Freedom from an imperfect world Review: Precious Jones is not your average character, and Push is not your average book. The shock and harsh reality of her world is plagued with sexual abuse, disease, illiteracy, and poverty. This negativity, however, draws you into a world of young a black girl; who fights for her freedom from her abusive parents. She fights for a chance at an education... a chance at a future. You'll empathize, grow with, and fight for her even while all the chips are stacked against her. Be prepared not to put down this book, and keep the box of tissue near!
Rating: Summary: Push II? Review: "Push" had its ups and downs. Disturbing and motivating. It pretty much grabbed my attention. The estory reflected the dispair of a child who had to find her way out the hell of her existence. I was left with a few questions. Did Precious see all at the age of sixteen? Did Abdul give Precious the strengths to overcome her miseries? Was Precious ending the pattern of abusive relationships in her family? "Push" is unfinished. Precious is a character of power, she needed to be more explored.
Rating: Summary: "Pushing her Parents off of her" Review: Saphire's story of a young girl finding a voice is powerfully moving. In "Push" we have Precious, who is a foul-mouthed character, who is tragic and inspiring all at once. From the dark elements of her emotionally barren mother, to her abusive, twisted father, Precious is forced to struggle to get away from her family and the perceptions that people have of her. Her true essence is found when her self worth from Ms. Rain and the other tragic classmates from her new Alternative school. I could only read in disbelief as her hopes and dreams are disturbed by her affliction to H.I.V/ A.I.D.S . Yet I found solace that the character that was once given up on, invisible, to the world around her was becoming visible through her voice. Saphire's use of language strengthens Precious as a character, and shows her slow rise as an individual and as a writer. From an illiterate teenage mother to an addition to her class, Precious grows strong with her connections to the sympathetic Ms. Rain, the tragic Rita, and the seemingly imposing Jermaine. These characters all found a common ground and in essence became each other's family. "Push" is gripping and moving. As I read I couldn't bring myself to put the book down. I wanted to find out what was going to happen to Precious next. This book is highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: sad sad Review: maybe i missed something but this book had no point. and i can't see how this could educate or inform anyone
Rating: Summary: A LOOK INTO REAL LIFE! Review: From the very first page Sapphire grabs your attention and holds it there through the rest of the book. I couldn't put the book down. I felt like I was that young girl going through those problems. I could see the faces of the characters and hear the sounds of her world. I lent this book to other people who read it as fast as I did (in one night). I am hoping that Sapphire writes another book. I really enjoy her poems as well.
Rating: Summary: Realistic! Review: Even though this book is a work of fiction, I found it to be based in reality. Precious Jones is a child growing up in Harlem in the 1980's. After suffering an incredible amount of sexual abuse from her father and physical abuse from her mother she tries to turn her life around. The reader is left with a feeling that the story isn't over, just to be continued.
