Summary: Intense Story!
Review: It took me a little while to understand the dialogue of the main character Precious Jones. Once I established the rhythm of the dialect, the story was awesome. This story made me cry. I realize that it is a work of fiction, however, I also realize that this is someone's life story. This is a very deep novel, not one for light reading. It is an excellent book.

Summary: Raw, Blunt and Incredibly written!
Review: This book was one of the most disturbing books I've ever read. It was really hard to read about the situation that Precious was in. I had to take a couple of breaks because it was so intense. This book is one of the many important books that needs to be read. It's so powerful. It will make you cry, be angry, laugh and be inspired by Precious's never ending effort.

Summary: excellent
Review: I really enjoyed this book. I was able to read within 2 days. It was so good it was hard to put down. I developed a great disliking for the mother who was the cause of Precious being the way she is and not trying to be there for her. But I do admire Precious for her desire to rise above of it no matter what the circumstances were

Summary: UTTERLY UNBELIEVABLE
Review: THIS BOOK WAS DEEP. I"VE READ LOTS OF BOOKS IN MY LIFETIME BUT THIS ONE DISTURBED ME THE MOST. THE SYSTEM FAILED PRECIOUS THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE BOOK. HER MOTHER & FATHER SHOULD'VE BEEN PUT IN FRONT OF A FIRING SQUAD TO DIE. THE TEACHERS IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SHE ATTENDED FAILED HER, HER MOTHER FAILED HER, THE HOSPITAL STAFF (AFTER GIVING BIRTH AT 12, PREGNANT BY HER OWN FATHER) FAILED HER. THIS BOOK MADE ME SO ANGRY I CRIED. TRULY DISTURBING. GOD HELP HER.

Summary: SAPPHIRE TAKES US THERE. . .
Review: I was blown away! Sapphire is a genius and PUSH does everything that she meant for it to do. It makes us think, cry, scream, laugh, and be grateful for our own lives. PUSH should be required reading for everyone.

Summary: fasinating, blunt, enlightning, horrific, a must read
Review: I've just completed reading Push for the second time.I read this novel about two years ago and after talking with an adult literacy expert I was surprised that this book was "the" book to read in terms of literacy and Adults. I must admit that the second read was as if I had not ever read the novel before. This time I read for a different purpose. I was interested in approaches used when teaching Adults literacy skills. Not just in the traditional sense of literacy but a broader concept of literacy. I cried from the beginning to the end. A novel such as this has so much realism, Sapphire has to have experience in working with adults. she knows just what it takes to keep them interested and comming back to class. This is especially important because the dropout rate in adult literacy programs is high. Precious is a very dynamic character. I was able to laugh with her as well a cry. Despite her poor literacy skills she has tremendous insight into the things that "people" deem important. The growth of the main character was expertly chronicled form beginning to end. I'm waiting for the sequel!

Summary: No New Ground Covered Here
Review: Push wasn't a bad read. The language was vibrant, and the change of style as the main character's own writing skills improved was nice. However, all of the ravings about how 'powerful' and 'moving' this book was seem to ignore the fact that it's essentially genre literature. It fell rather easily into the 'radical teacher teaching the unteachable by using radical methods' formula. And despite all of the lurid sex and violence, that prevented it from being very powerful or moving, at least for me.

Summary: AN AUDIOBOOK FOR REPEATED LISTENINGS
Review: I find it ironic that the audio version of PUSH begins (and closes) with a cheesey publisher's musical intro, supposedly hip and street-smart, which ends up contrasting successfully with the voice of Safire as the story of Clarice Precious Jones unfolds... with a BANG. I read PUSH first, when urged to sample some current fiction while working at a bookstore. I was enthralled, awakened, slapped in the face. Fresh, honest language, but not for shock value. The audio abridgement works. What was kept is the core, the essence, if you will, of the story. Safire's reading makes Precious so real, I've repeatedly listened to the tapes; imagining, feeling, thinking and laughing... A fluid story that touches on all the shades of a very real life. I recommend reading the novel first, and then listening to the audio, but, either way would work. RECOMMENDED!

Summary: LOVE, HATE, LAUGH, CRY; IT'S ALL IN THIS WONDERFUL BOOK
Review: I READ THIS BOOK IN 97, AND SINCE THEN HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT THIS BOOK TO MY BOOK CLUB, AND ALSO OTHER READERS. PRECIOUS WILL TEACH YOU IN THIS BOOK THAT NO MATTER WHAT, AND I MEAN NO MATTER, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING HIGHER, SOMETHING BIGGER THAN WHERE AND WHO YOU ARE. PRECIOUS IS A GIRL WHO EXPERIENCED ADULT THINGS THAT SOME ADULTS DON'T EXPERIENCE IN A LIFETIME. YOU WILL REALLY TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR EVERYDAY SURROUNDINGS THROUGH AND AFTER THIS BOOK. SOME OF US ARE OH SO BLESSED. REMEMBER THAT IN READING THIS SOUL SEARCHING BOOK.
