Rating: Summary: GIANT SQUID...THATS NEW Review: A giant squid is a new(but not bad)idea. I liked it a lot. This is a LOT better than Jaws. Read this, it'll keep you out of the ocean for months. Literally. MONTHS. It's that scary. But check it out from the library before you buy it. It's one of those you love it our you hate it books
Rating: Summary: Riveting! Review: A rewrite of Jaws? An understatement. BEAST is a bold book with a beast of immense proportions. No dumb subplots to slow you down. Just a bigger, more facinating creature and more scenes of action and terror, and the victims die in pairs. Whip Darling is a more controlled and acessible character than Brody, and his story will suit you nicely. Benchley is at full pace for his classic cynicism and quick, tense moments between people. The humor in the dialogue also soars, and unfortunatly this is his last book that doesn't deliver a series of cheesy lines. All this human material hangs in perfect balance with the BEAST, as it stalks the Bermuda waters. The final sea quest is great and doesn't linger like the Jaws one did. In the end you get a book about a huge squid and The people it affects. It also doens't waste as much time with environmental junk like WHITE SHARK did. So grab the book and read it to the fullest because. . . "It's not everyday you get to sniff an randy squid"
Rating: Summary: Benchley pulls another monster from the deep blue sea. Review: Beast is a simply superb stream lined thriller of a monster novel. The nearly mythical giant squid, now starving from over population, a situation caused in part by man's hunting the squid's predators to near extinction, rises to the surface and begins to hunt man just off the coast of the Bermuda islands. Benchley keeps the plot moving so fast that you can forgive him for simply rewriting Jaws as a better novel (Benchley even throws in a joke or two about his previous sea creature chiller). If you have only seen the horrendously bad mini-series adaptation then you are missing out on a real treat of a book. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: It's the scariest book I've ever read in my entire life. Review: Beast is about a giant squid coming to Bermuda and attacking people (same concept as Jaws). Whip Darling is the main character and he is trying to stop it with a Navy SEAL and two rich men whose childeren where victims. Will they suceed or will the squid take over Bermuda???
Rating: Summary: This was a great thriller by author Benchley! Review: Benchley's done it again. With the success of Jaws, Peter Benchley once again uses the recipe, only this time using a 100 ft. Archetuthis Dux, or giant squid. I would definatly recommend this book!!! A really good read!!!
Rating: Summary: Better than Jaws... Review: Considering how similar the outline of the plots between Jaws and Beast are, Benchely does an amazing job of actually making this book a better page turner...Beast, like Jaws, is about a large seamonster - a giant squid this time - that kills a few people, and then the community slowly beings to figure out what it is and then make efforts to kill it... The beauty of this story are the substories. Benchley starts several new chapters, with new characters in the middle of the book. All of these non-main characters are doing something out at sea... Some of them return home while some do not. Its amazing how fast Benchley makes one care about these characters and how upset the reader is when they dont make it...
All the while the descriptions of the monster are neutral...there is no rage or evil in the beast, it simply exists and needs food... too bad the area has been overfished and now the beast must hunt...
The final confrontation is a brilliantly written conclusion and one that will leave you wanting more... as amazing as it is, i enjoyed this much more than jaws...and i really loved jaws...
Speilberg should consider doing to this book what he did with Jaws... It would make millions and clear the beaches yet again...
Rating: Summary: Very good Review: For everyone who saw the NBC movie, read the book. The movie is very different from the book. The only thing dissapointing was the ending. For a society that expects large and very dramatic endings, the Beast just does not deliver. Despite the ending, I would recommend this book to everbody who likes suspense books.
Rating: Summary: Better than Jaws (if that's possible) Review: From the beginning, this book will grip you with it's hook imbedded tentacles and pull you in, until either you or it have been completely devoured. The giant squid is an absolutely fascinating, almost unknown creature, and this book is informative as well as entertainingly terrifying. Against the backdrop of the recessionary early '90's, it is unsurpassed for aquatic adventure.

Rating: Summary: AN EXCELLENT BOOK BAR NONE ONE OF BENCHLEY'S BEST. Review: I found BEAST to be one of the most entertaning books that I have read in a long while. For instance there are believable characters in this book such as WHIP DARLING who you feel you can rally around unlike some other books I have read. Also there is'nt any boring town subplots either which would take the focus off of why this GIANT SQUID has caused all this havoc on the ocean. How big is this GIANT SQUID I won't say but you'll be amazed that's for sure I felt that this was the best book I have read since MEG by STEVE ALTEN you can see my review of MEG if you'd like too as well. So all in all don't miss reading BEAST by PETER BENCHLEY or you'll regret it.
