Rating: Summary: Virtuoso Performance from Two Virtuoso Actors Review: It's quite rare that two superstars come together in a movie and achieve a whole that exceeds the sum of their respective parts. The elements of blindness, selfishness, and self-destructiveness that lead to forbidden affair are stunningly illustrated by virtuoso performances by Irons, Binoche, and Richardson. The movie is alternately gut-wrenching, infuriating, and saddening, but it will be one of the most memorable films that you'll ever see.
Rating: Summary: You Mean It's Not Okay To Sleep With My Son's Fiance??? Review: The premise of this book is that if you're a cold locked-up-hearted middle aged man, sleeping with your own son's fiance is not the way to go about livening up your tired & frosty life. Well, OBVIOUSLY! It's a rather plain novel about people with no boundaries and the "damage" their impulsivity and lack of sense can cause.
Rating: Summary: Deeply disturbing, damaging and beautifully made picture. Review: Wonderful actors, almost all of them, but the trio Irons, Binoche and Richardson are magnificent. Only Malle could've made this movie: there is atmosphere, feeling and passion in the way the story developes and ends. The extent of the damage is palpable and searing. The book was transformed into the picture with understanding, knowledge and grace. I should not recomend it to very the young adults (giggling fascination with sex scenes) and superficial or conservative people.
Rating: Summary: i want my money back Review: I want my money back. Not from Amazon, but from Jeremey Irons for a stunningly bad performance and from Roger Ebert for giving this movie four stars. HE'S LYING. Jeremey Irons has an affair with his son's fiance'. Hmmmmm. Something new. An idea with possibilities. But it ends there folks. No attempt is made to explain why these two are attracted to one another, they just are. They are driven enough to sacrifice themselves and those they supposedly care about. The movie makes no attempt to make us care about their in-law incestuous relationship or their respective families. Where is that Mac truck when you need it. One final comment-"Dead Ringers"
Rating: Summary: Haunting and disturbing, but fascinating Review: When I read this novel, I was mesmerized by it until the end. A terrific story of a dangerous obsession that will both haunt and disturb its readers. Even though the conclusion is inevitable, the manner in which the affair is discovered and its aftermath comes as a shock! Extremely well written, (especially considering the female author tells the tale from the father's perspective) this novel was utterly fascinating. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Most moving book I have ever read. Review: This book haunted me for weeks after having read it. I am surprised by some of the negaruve reviews found here. Each to his own, but if you have ever experienced a tragic love situation, and who has not, this will hit home. In my opinion, a very worthwhile use of trees.
Rating: Summary: At least its better than her other so-called novels. Review: Hart's clipped, stark call it what you will style is interesting...for the first few pages. It becomes increasingly obvious that this is not an artistic choice but a choice of necessity. Poor Ms.Hart has precious little to say or add to give her main character the breath of life (called depth by others). That said this is a novel full of promise which having perused her other efforts is never realised...it seems Hart is unaware of her strengths as a writer, for there are strong passages in this book but it is clear that she lacks self-awareness and maturity as a novelist. If you liked this novel do not read her other work or it will open your eyes to the limitations of her style and her intentions as a novelist.
Rating: Summary: If I was on a deserted island and had only 1 movie watch... Review: No one does obsession better than Jeremy Irons. His face could be a billboard for pain. And passion, too. If you've ever been obsessed with someone(and who hasn't?), you must see this remarkable movie. The photographic image at the end-the only remnant of the Irons' character's former life-is unforgettable. Miranda Richardson is entirely credible as the wife and mother. If tragedy struck my own son, I'd likely act exactly the same way. Juliette Binoche is incredible. Yes these are rich, beautiful people but the story's so REAL! This is a movie to see again and again. Tell your friends, your neighbours, the clerk at the corner store. Only one movie to watch for the rest of my life? Damage. Damage. Damage. Does anyone out there feel the same way?
Rating: Summary: A perfect example of exceptional film making. Review: In my opinion this is an all-around great film. Jeremy Irons delivers a powerful performance lulling the audience to reallt believe his actions are almost out of his own control. Binoche, great as always, seems to exude sensuality without even trying; always having such incredible presence on screen. The two actors seem to electrify each other with obvious chemisty and a real feel for their roles. With a top-notch supporting cast (note the incredible acting by Miranda Richardson who plays Irons's character's wife!). I consider this a must-see for just about anyone.
Rating: Summary: superb Review: I read Hart's novel when I was a senior in high school, so I was very curious how the film would turn out. Louis Malle did a fabulous job capturing the obsession and darkness of the novel on the screen. His interview at the end of the film is a must see. Binoche and Irons were perfect. Miranda Richardson stole the show, however, with her small, but extremely well-portrayed role as the wife. However, I have had mixed results recommending this movie to friends. Most of them do not like it nearly as much as I do....they just think that Binoche is crazy and Irons is obsessed and do not think about it in any more depth. Be sure you are in the mood to contemplate obsession and lust before you watch it.
