Rating: Summary: Very entertaining Review: This was a very entertaining book from start to finish. Very quick and easy reading because it holds your interest so fully. There are so many twists and turns all the way through with each separate plot that I kept feeling that a movie should be made of this book. It is well worth reading just to see how it comes out in the end.
Rating: Summary: Worthwhile reading Review: I found Jeffrey Archer's "Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less" very entertaining. It begins with the story of a Polish immigrant boy (Henryk Metelski, later becoming Harvey Metcalf) who goes to work as a messenger on Wall Street and acquires a "streetwise" financial education which eventually enables him to become a millionaire. He makes his millions by taking advantage of any poor innocent who stumbles into his path and then shrewdly investing the profits of his schemes. As he grows older he manages to build a shroud of respectability around himself, and lives the life of the uppercrust -- complete with a collection of Impressionist paintings, yearly trips to Wimbledon and Monte Carlo, and a stable of race horses -- but he still can't resist the lure of making easy money by cheating the unsuspecting. The story takes off when four such unsuspecting souls lose a combined one million dollars in an insider stock deal Harvey cooks up. He's finally settled on the wrong people to take advantage of and they join forces to steal their money back -- not a penny more, not a penny less. Each of the four, coming from a different walk of life and possessing quite different talents, devises a plan to relieve Harvey of a portion of his ill-gotten gain. They spare no cost in carrying out their plans, keeping a running tally of their expenses and charging it all to Harvey. The result is a light, easy to read and hard to put down, story of a professional conman being outconned. Archer maintains suspense in the story by not letting the reader know how each con will work until it unfolds, and the result is often hilarious as we watch the unsuspecting Harvey bumble from situation to situation, losing money at every turn. Archer creates lovable characters in the four swindlers -- after all, who hasn't ever felt taken advantage of by someone with more power and money, and longed to come up with the perfect scheme to get them back? The reader also becomes attached to Harvey as in spite of his faults we see glimpses of the naive immigrant boy longing for a type of acceptance that remains out of reach despite his enormous financial success. No one is really hurt in this book, there is no violence and very little bloodshed, just a well-written and entertaining story. And of course there is the classic Archer twist of fate at the very end. If you don't read this book for any other reason, read it for the last two pages.

Rating: Summary: A well-written, encaptivating book. Review: A well-defined storyline full of vivid descriptionand pacy action. A pauper to prince story, a selfbuilt man who does not know that he has cheated the wrong people. They vow to get every penny back but nothing extra. How far do they succeed. The book also has quite a few sharp twists when they are least expected. A must read for any serious Sir Jeffrey Archer fan.
Rating: Summary: SIMPLE YET A QUICK AND ENTERTAINING READ Review: ABOUT WHAT I EXPECTED OF A 300 PAGE BOOK. A SIMPLE PLOT WITH AFEW TWISTS AND TURNS. THIS IS CERTAINLY NOT HIS BEST WORK AND PALESIN COMPARISON WITH MOST OF JEFFREY ARCHER'S OTHER CLASSICS. A GOOD BOOK TO BRING TO THE BEACH AND FINISH IN 2-3 DAYS.
Rating: Summary: What a charming story Review: I found myself laughing out loud, especially at the end which really threw me for a loop. Archer is one of the better story teller's of our time. He knows just how to weave a tale and make the end of every chapter a cliff-hanger. I have enjoyed reading several of his novels which are full of suspense, outstanding plots and excellent dialogue. But Not a Penny More is in a class by itself. If Hollywood didn't mess things up so badly, I would suggest a contemporary version of this story set to film. In the meantime, happy reading!
Rating: Summary: A really great start Review: This is Jeffery Archer's first book. And what a great first book it is! The novel is a stunning tale of fraud and revenge. With a fake oil company and a few well placed whispers Harvey Metcalfe pulls off an easy multi-million-dollar swindle. One of his victims, a university professor, decides to get even. With a dossier on Harvey the professor contacts the other three victims and convinces them to come up with a way to get their money back. There are many wonderful twists in this book. This is a great way to get into Jeffery Archer work . . .
Rating: Summary: Greed can get you anywhere Review: I found this book to be my cure for long waits in the doctor's waiting room. With this book with me I never minded the wait, in fact the time flew and I just didn't want to put it down. I was always trying to guess the next twist and turn that the story took. Don't read if you want something to help you fall asleep.
Rating: Summary: Absolute Reader Heaven... Review: I think this is easily the 2nd best J.A I have read till date. I havent read all but from the ones that I have this book stands due its complex yet simple thrill. I think its a very good account of a man's life for a certain portion of the book. Turns out the hero's a villain but then is he? It keeps you guessing , a definite page turner. It made me realise Mr.Archer has this absolute gift to give the best possible starts to any book. The start that this book had made me stay awake on a midnight for five consecutive hours of reading after which I finished the book the following day. I think anyone remotely interested in knowing more than what they know and beyond what they know should get it. No I do not mean it in a stereotype way. Ah Well, I'll shut up now. Enjoy this read.
Rating: Summary: Sweet revenge, very intelligent plot Review: The twists and cunning in this book leave the movie Ocean's 11 far behind. I mentioned Ocean's 11 because the feeling I had while reading this book and watching that movie were the same - amusement mixed with oodles of plain fun.
