Rating: Summary: Pretentious and didactic Review: Yet another end of the millenium apocalyptic novel which is characterized by excessive didactic science explanations and 2-dimensional characters. The book also includes a pompous afterword section - an exercise in over-justification. I have to admit an interesting scientific premise is developed (for a SF novel) but spoilt in the execution by rather clumsy writing. Perhaps the author should stick to the non-fiction science genre.
Rating: Summary: A Real Page Turner Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read this on an international flight and it kept me in such good company I hardly noticed the fatigue. There are plenty of interesting concepts. Some of them seem bizarre and yet totally plausible. Pellegrino is indeed a great author, scientist and adventurer!
Rating: Summary: one of the best Review: this is by far one of the best books i have ever read. not only because it is mildly frightning because of the realistic possibilities, but also because it is very well written fiction. There are real people in this book who really exist and really are the experts in the particular fields described. But after you have read the book, the final chapter is the section that tells you what parts of the book are true and which are creative changes by the author. So you will know what the real possibilities are. I work in a book store and have recommended it to others who also enjoyed it who in turn bought copies for others.
Rating: Summary: A Michael Criton caliber plausible Nightmare Review: This book is quite a page turner. Not to mention that it seems as though what the author is saying is all correct and true to life. This is a good book for people who like to interpret the end of the world. After reading this book I feel inclined to bend down and kiss every ant and insect in sight and pray for forgiveness!
Rating: Summary: Let this book gather DUST on your shelf! Review: I found this book to be a crushing disappointment! My main objection is that the characters were so shallow as to be uninteresting. Also, there were so many science lectures inserted that I think the average reader will be lost (I have an undergraduate degree in biology and graduate school in physiology and I found them to be too diadactic). This book follows in the genre of "The Population Bomb" and "Silent Spring", in which scientists vastly overstate the case of the horrors of environmental contamination. OK, these books were not written as fiction as was "DUST," but the effect is still the same; OVERKILL. In summary, I found the book to be shallow and depressing.
Rating: Summary: so plausible, so close to reality, its terrifying Review: We have always thought we as humans were the rulers of this planet, yet when the insects begin to die off we circle into chaos and that chaos caused by nature spirals into man-made anarchy which is even more terrifying. Dust is a novel which will question your own thoughts on humans place in this world and understand that our place in the food chain is easily interchangable and not to underestimate other creatures on this Earth.
Rating: Summary: Scientifically meaty; immensely relevant and satisfying. Review: "Dust"'s plot, about the interconnections and fragility of ecosystems, is doubly relevant in the face of all the environmental abuses / disasters that are happening today. Dr. Pellegrino's forays into scientific concepts / projections provide a satisfying and realistic backbone to his apocalyptic vision.Excellent book. A must for environmentalists, naturalists, and sci-fi afficionados.
Rating: Summary: This is a really great book! Review: Man, I have got to tell you, this book is extremely stimulating, exciting, off of the edge entertainment. I don't personally prefer to read a whole lot, but I tell you what, this book has really changed my perspective. In other words, This Is A Really Great Book!
Rating: Summary: Intriguing Premise, But Lacks a Payoff Review: This book started out with much promise, but fizzled on the delivery. There was too much discussion on the cause of the environmental catastrophes and not enough action for me. The ending was lacking in impact.
Rating: Summary: Creative and intelligent! Review: I really enjoyed the author's imaginative use of real science, taken from wildly diverse fields. He's managed to pull it all together into an entertaining novel in which science and reason take center stage. In an age when so much of the reading public is willing to believe in pseudoscience and quackery, it's nice to see a book in which scientists are the heroes, not the villains. Yes, at heart it's yet another apocalyptic novel (there seem to be a lot of them these days) but this one is unique in that it's based on a creative and fascinating premise. Hats off to you, sir! Tess Gerritsen
