Rating: Summary: It's a good read Review: Mary Willis Walker is one of my favorite author. I would have given this book a higher mark but I read Under the Bettle's Cellar (a must read)which is by far Ms. Walker's best work so far.
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: Mary Willis Walker really knows how to write 'em. I have read all three of her books and they are all well written and engrossing. Molly Cates is someone that I could relate to - she is extremely driven and haunted by what she has seen in her past.Bronk was chilling as the possible serial killer. This was one book that I kept saying to myself - okay just one more page until I was up to the wee hours of the morning and I just had to finish it.
Rating: Summary: A Creepy Thriller Review: Mary Willis Walker really knows how to write 'em. I have read all three of her books and they are all well written and engrossing. Rating: Summary: A Good Crime Novel Featuring Molly Cates Review: Molly Cates, the feisty journalist who sometimes seems like she is channeling Texas' own Molly Ivins, made her debut in this, the second novel by Mary Willis Walker which became the winner of the prestigious Edgar Award for 1994.
Molly is even better in the sequel book, the sublimely creepy UNDER THE BEETLE'S CELLAR, before taking a sharp turn downwards in the homeless-theme mystery ALL THE DEAD LIE DOWN, which won the Stupid Title Award the year it appeared.
In RED SCREAM, Molly tangles with the Texas Scalper, a convicted murderer she begins to suspect is not as evil or guilty as he seems, especially when a copycat murder takes place under circumstances which make it clear that Louie couldn't have committed this murder. It's scary, it's suspenseful, and the poetry about which so many have complained is actually very accomplished and lyrical.
The only question is, what has happened to Mary Willis Walker? It's been a long time since ALL THE DEAD LAY DOWN. If anyone has the answer, could you post here on Amazon Com and sate the curiosity of a bereft fan.
Rating: Summary: How did this win the Edgar last year ? Slow and dull ... Review: Much too formulaic for my taste. Having a beleaguered divorced reporter coping with fundamental cultural differences in other characters and slowly coming to the
realization that she is in the real world and things are
not always as they seem ... been there, done that.
Walker's book does not come close to the consistently
excellent efforts of J.L. Burke, M. Connelly, J. Sandford,
J.W. Hall, etc. who also work socio-psychological themes
into their mysteries but with much more compelling plot
and climax.
Rating: Summary: Good but not great Review: Really my rating is more like 3 1/2. This was pretty good throughout, with brief flashes of excellent prose. This won the Edgar? All I can say is that 1994 must have been a really thin year for mystery.
Rating: Summary: Walker trivializes serial murder. Review: Red Scream turned out to be not only a disappointment, but a trivialization of its major concern, serial murder. The protagonist, Molly Cates, is not especially likeable from the beginning. She is best characterized as whining and self-absorbed. And she doesn't grow on you with the passage of time. Molly's pursuit of "justice" smacks of self-serving justification, rather than a real desire to preserve justice. Her stance on capital punishment, too, seems more like posturing than a genuine moral objection. Couple Molly's character flaws with a plot that seems all to predictable and you have identified the source of this reader's irritation with the book.
Rating: Summary: Really had me going to a point. Review: Sorry, but the climatical scene just did not make sense to me. It was like Pauline was in Peril and intantly lived happily ever after. I know it is hard to end a story line but that is the author's job. After all the rich character development in Red Scream, the way Ms Walker ended this book made me scream. MWY
Rating: Summary: if you love mysteries, you'll love this book! Review: There aren't many books I can't put down once I start reading them, but "The Red Scream" definitely fits the bill. Myself being born and bred on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, I love the Southern colloquisms Ms. Walker puts in her book. I also liked greatly the poems that start each chapter; poems written by the death row inmate that is a central character in the book. I eagerly await my next delivery of Mary Willis Walker's books from Amazon.com.
