Summary: Still good
Review: I have read several of Mr. Hunter's books and always found them immensely enjoyable. Certainly they aren't for everyone -- you must enjoy the genre. However, if you are into action books in general or sniper books in particular, this is a fine read.
I found the plot well thought out and well worked.

Summary: the Godiva chocolate of junk-food books
Review: Once in a while I need to read some junk food, just to get my mind off stuff, and I came across this little package of unlabeled chocolate (found it in the lobby of my building)...and ate it. I was expecting Hershey's, but no! It was Godiva.

Good points: An excellent and clever plot with lots of fast little unexpected twists and turns, characters that were surprisingly more dimensional than one would expect, many sharp little psychological insights, lots and lots and lots of good strong detail about the FBI, the CIA, and most of all, about big-league shooting. (I used to be a shooter way back when, and I had no idea there was so much intricacy to it. I just bought the gun, loaded it, aimed it as best I could, and shot it...and didn't think too much.) Also, the "good guy" characters are extremely sympathetic, and you can't wait for the "bad guys" to get what's coming to them. Lastly, the book is LONG, so it doesn't just start and stop and leave you wanting more.

Weaknesses: at times a little predictable, and at times certain characters somewhat overdone (like Dr. Dobbler - he was just a one-trick pony, which is unrealistic for a "brilliant" psychiatrist, and he could have had more character growth). And lastly, though perhaps this isn't fair, I find myself wondering what motivates someone like Stephen Hunter to write a book like this...a book which, despite its interesting and quick points and rich detail, has very little philosophically or emotionally growth-oriented about it. I guess it's the same thing that motivates someone out there to spend their life developing the ultimate formula for Godiva chocolate. But then again, thank god for Godiva!

Summary: All shooters will love this gem.
Review: If the first chapter doesn't grab you nothing will. This is the first of several books about an accomplished shooter and is an exciting action adventure story, surprising and with suspense. Well defined characters.

Summary: A thrill ride
Review: I am an avid reader and someone who is also skeptical about starting a book, as I feel I must finish it regardless of how horrid it might be. My mother came home with this book as the local librian told her that it was a wonderful "mystery." My mother took the book without reading the cover thinking it would be an Agatha Christie type of novel. Needless to say, after hours of solid reading, my mother finished the book that night breathlessly saying how wonderful it was! She bought the book for me and I read it in one sitting. It is fantastic. Mr. Hunter is a wonderful story teller in this novel. Although this isn't my favorite book it is in the top 10 for sure. Since then my entire family has become an avid Stephen Hunter fan. Please read this book or you are missing out on a wonderful ride :)

Summary: Unable to put down
Review: This book rocks. There is a little of Bob the Nailer in us all (hopfully) and we all want loyal friends just like Bob. And he is damn cool to boot. I dont know where my copy is at the moment (lent to friend-again). Re readable for a third time with the same excitment (you too will belive) this book is fantastic. Go halves with a friend, ... a copy, sell your soul. Just get a copy.

Summary: Simply, this story rocks.
Review: It's a keeper, the kind that you save and read again. I was going on a long international plane flight and needed some good reading material. I picked this book up, having never read any Stephen Hunter books, and hoped it'd keep me entertained. It did more than that. I had my nose planted firmly in this book and didn't come up for air until it was finished. I could not put it down. The protagonist Bob Lee Swagger, is an excellent character, heroic yet flawed. And smart. Very clever. This is characterization in an action/thriller book done right for a change. You can see Swagger as a real person, not just a 2 dimensional cardboard commando. Hooray for Hunter. If you haven't read "Time to Kill", another Bob Lee Swagger novel, GET IT NOW! My only question is: When's the movie coming out?!

Summary: Portrait of a Compassionate Soldier
Review: Stephen Hunter is a gifted author with the ability to put into words the heart and soul of his characters.

He builds Bob Lee Swagger's character early and makes the reader want to know more by his description of a man, disgruntled by Viet Nam, who molded himself into the most efficient and deadly sniper of the war.

The reader learns early into the story that Bob Lee has character and is honest to a fault. He shows his compassion early also by helping the buck deer to survive by cutting off their antlers. There are several other instances throughout the story where he strengthens your belief that he is truly a honest and compassionate man.

The entire book, although it is a bit too technical for a non hunter like myself, is written to keep the reader motivated to learn what else can happen to Bob Lee in his quest to overcome the plot by his enemies to eliminate him. It is a story which becomes a classic confrontation between good and evil. It also depicts the dedication of a man who, although alone and outmanned by the bad guys, overcomes evil and eventually wins out over all those odds.

I am impressed by Mr. Hunters ability to keep all the facts straight in his writing. After reading the book two times I found only a few errors. I only found the one error on my third reading. On pg. 4 of the hard copy he depicted Jack Payne as carrying a cut-down shotgun under his left arm. Then on pg 17 the gun is described as a bulge under his right arm. So much for nitpicking.

I thoroughly enjoyed the drama and the enjoyment of waiting hopefully for Bob Lee to overcome the bad guys and get the girl in the end.

Summary: Point Of Impact
Review: Stephen Hunter is a master! He keeps you guessing until the final page and then only to find out that there are other novels with this character. The suspence can be compared to Clancy, John Sanford and Iris Johanson. Read this book. You will not be dissapointed.

Summary: Hunter at his best
Review: This is the one book that I've shared with friends that had the ability to keep on giving. It triggered me to reread the series a second time and it's just as enjoyable as my first time through.
