Summary: Ranks on my top 10 books of all time
Review: Stephen Hunter must have been a gun in a previous life. He knows shooting. I was hooked after the first couple of pages, and couldn't put this one down. I have since read the book 3 times. If you like guns in any small way, or just plain like a good thriller, it doesn't get any better than this. Hunter builds the main character in a way that you can see every hard line of his face, the way he walks, and the sound of his voice. If I were casting a movie of this book, I'd put Ed Harris in the role. The story is full of interesting and unpredictable plot twists, gun lore, action and revenge. It won't let you down. Hunter's sequels to this book don't hold up as well; Dirty White Boys is a bit too harsh, and Black Light moves too slowly. But Point of Impact is a stroke of genius.

Summary: Incredible!
Review: Wow, this book is amazing! Well written and technically pretty good. Bob "the Nailer" is not one of those annoyingly perfect good guys that don't really exist. He has his share of problems, which are explained in the book but not dwelled on for long.

There are some pretty good reviews here that sum up the story pretty well, so I'm going to skip that. I will say that I normally read only sci-fi/fantasy and had long ago grown weary of these type of books. But the way Hunter combines the convoluted plot twists that Ludlum loves so much with the attention to detail that Clancy is so known for and then adds his own ability to tell a story in an interesting way really hooked me.

You just may find yourself shopping for a Winchester mdl 70 or a Remington 700 (in .308, of course) before the end of this one!

Summary: Thank you Stephen Hunter.
Review: Mr. Hunter, I was looking for something to read and looked through your books. They didn't have your latest novel so I bought Point of Impact, even though I had listened to it on audiotape a few years ago. When I opened the book to the dedication page it brought me to tears. I couldn't believe you had dedicated the book to my cousin John Burke. Thank you. The words in your acknowledgment are gracious and mean so much coming from such an accomplished writer.

I've often wondered how John would have ever come back to the "world" after being a sniper in Vietnam. I imagine it would be difficult, the way you portray it in your books, especially here. And that realism is one reason I would recommend this book.

The other is that it is just a really great book to read.

Summary: A very satifyingly read!!!
Review: This one is actually the best work of Hunter. His first novel(?) The Master Sniper turned out to be flawed with unripened scenario and writing tech. But not this one as well as its two sequels, DIRTY WHITE BOYS and BLACK LIGHT. All three had proved that the real mature Hunter is finally arrived! Readers who could enjoy this book greatly should also check out and purchase from Amazon.com several other books fromin the same genre: WHITE STAR by James Thayer--like Bob Lee Swagger's nickname, the hero in W/S was named WHITE STAR by his deadly enemy; SHADOW OVER BABYLON by David Mason(an English weapry expert), there is a great sniper in this book too; SNIPER'S MOON by Carson Stroud, a V/N veteran sniper turned N.Y. cop; POINT OF IMPACT, by Jack Curtis. Plus the old THE MASTER SNIPER, I think the readers would feel quite satsified.

Summary: Phenomenal
Review: There simply are not enough superlatives to describe Point of Impact. This was a phenomenal book, clearly among my personal top-five list. In Point of Impact, Hunter presents Bob Lee Swagger (AKA "Bob the Nailer" due to his reputation as a Marine sniper during the Vietnam War) in a fast-paced conspiracy thriller. Hunter hooks you in the first few pages of the book as Swagger is hunting on his property in Arkansas. As the story unfolds, Swagger demonstrates the physical and mental toughness, decisiveness, patience, perseverance, and survival instincts that made him the best at what he does. Throughout the book, one comes to know and further appreciate the intricacies, both positive and negative, of being "Bob the Nailer." Action sequences and character development are interwoven and provide a complementary blend throughout the book. From start to finish, this book is impossible to put down.

Summary: The real thing
Review: Stephen Hunter's "Point of impact" is the first in the Bob Lee Swagger series. Bob Lee is, no doubt, an excellent character. Hunter made him completely believable, and that's the most important thing about a good character. A Vietnam veteran, Swagger now lives in peace at his reclused home in rural Arkansas. Bob Lee is an experting in snipe shooting, general weapons and living in isolation. Suddenly, a shadowy military organization lures him into advising them how to catch another sniper, who may try to kill the president at a speech. Bob Lee is framed, and, wounded, has to run to save his life; only one man can help him: an FBI agent, on leave, himself an ex-sniper, living with the ghosts of his past mistakes.

The story is not new, it has been used for a long time. However, Hunter's easy writing, believable characters, fast-paced pursuits, and, most of all, the tense moments of sniper action make this a great book. What's best, Stephen Hunter has (so far) written six books featuring the Swagger family. From what I've read on other reviews, each one of them is great. Hunter has accomplished what all thriller authors want, but few are able to do: an action thriller filled with enjoyable characters, with a touch of psycholgical warfare thrown in the middle.

I'll surely read other books by Stephen Hunter.

Summary: Unparallelled Writing Skill
Review: Anyone who has read Stephen Hunter's novels know they are in for a good read, and this book is no exception. Having barely escaped an Assassination plot supposedly aimed at the President of the United States, Bob Lee Swagger (the hero of the story), is now the target of a Nation Wide manhunt. His only allies is are lady he just met and a frowned upon FBI agent.

This book was a phenomenal read. The gun facts are very accurate and detailed. Many books I have read make the Hero out to be an invincible person with no flaws, which is not the case with this book. "Bob the Nailer" has his own flaws to deal with, which makes the book an even better read.

Summary: One of the craftiest books I have ever read, great suspense!
Review: Ditto ...
Exceptional story line. This page turning book as created a brand new Stephen Hunter fan. I plan on reading his other books as well. Upon finishing the book, my inital and numb response was (to paraphase), "totally freaking awesome."

Summary: I read several bad books before...
Review: I read several bad books before this one and I must say that I'm happy I did. They helped me truly appreciate the well written action, twists and suspense of this story. In this book Bob the Nailer is better at getting out of hopeless situations than James Bond, but without all the techtoys.

At least 3 times I thought he was 'done' but I knew because of the number of pages left that more was to come and I had to read for another 5, err...10, yikes...30, oh man...60 minutes - before forcing myself to put down the book and go to bed.

Point of Impact has lots of suspense, intrigue, and action, and is entertaining enough that the reader doesn't get hung up on the little "what ifs" that can easily spoil an action hero thriller like this. It is a highly enjoyable easy read.

Summary: It doesn't get any better
Review: Stephen Hunter's best novel of all time. You absolutely have to read this book. My wife, mother, and grandmoths also read the book and love it too, weird since it's a book about guns.

Too bad Stephen Hunter's books peaked here, he hasn't written a good one to this level since. They're all just wanna be novels.

Buy it, you will love it no matter what your tastes.
