Rating: Summary: Short and disappointing Review: I have been a Jack Higgins fan for quite a number of years. Unfortunately, I found his latest effort to be sadly lacking. The novel has exceedingly wide margins and is double-spaced. It is a very quick read and has practically no character development. There is also a dearth of any real descriptive writing. Overall, the book reminded me of a quick draft of the dialogue for a screenplay.
Rating: Summary: A Lunch-time thriller Review: You can read this latest Jack Higgins book in the average lunch hour - formula characters, formula killings, and formula ending. My advice? Re-read "The Eagle has Landed".
Rating: Summary: Day of Reckoning - Weakest Dillion adventure yet! Review: Weakest Higgins book to date! Written with such brevity a new reader knows virtually nothing about the many characters from past adventures. Dillion, Ferguson, etc. are saying "Let's do it." at every turn of the page, while Blake Johnson misses most of the adventure laying in a drugged stupor. Higgins' has almost always given his readers such descriptive details one feels as if they are actually there - almost tasting the Krug and smelling the fog on the water front. Perhaps this is a lead to Dillion final demise, to be replaced by Billy, who takes to action like the proverbial duck. Come on Mr. Higgins, we expect more from you!
Rating: Summary: Dramtic reading by Macnee saves the day! Review: I began by liking this audio version of Jack Higgins <Day of Reckoning> very much, mostly because of the pleasant reading--nay, dramatization--of Patrick Macnee. I am particularly fond of mysteries or adventure tales that concern detailed and elaborate step by step plans to accomplish this or that goal. For example, the Poirot mystery "The ABC Murders" or "The Great Train Robbery." On top of that, they are great fun. The work under scrutiny here, however, takes itself very seriously--which is certainly laudable--and starts interestingly enough when the Good Guys decide upon a campaign to wipe out the Bad Guys. The problem is that so many sidestreets are entered that the artistic pattern of the story is pretty much lost half way through. Now this would be no Bad Thing if it weren't for the fact that the characters are not only uninteresting but even the Good Guys are pretty unpleasant people. Consequently I would never recommend this book as a good read. On the other hand, Macnee is so good at his reading, despite the silly inclusion of sound effects, and so multi-voiced as he lets each character speak in a different voice (so far as is reasonable, that is) that I would be willing to give the AUDIO version four stars instead of the three I would give the book itself. Is that fair?
Rating: Summary: Day of Reckoning Review: I love Jack Higgens, but this was one of his weakest yet. Felt like I was reading a cartoon book without the pictures. But, never the less, I enjoyed it. Sean Dillion is a fun character.
Rating: Summary: Formula work - only fair Review: There are some plots which can only be described as formula. One such plot is the revenge novel - the antagonist has done something so bad the hero is out to kill or destroy him in return. In this overdone genre, for a novel to be worth reading either the characters or the specific situations of the chase must be well drawn and different from what we have seen before in this type of novel. Unfortunately, this latest novel of Higgins offers nothing new or exciting in this regard. The work is pure formula from start to finish. Futhermore, while I have no objection to a novel opening with a flashforward scene, (it is usually an exciting moment, - grabs our interest and keeps us reading) - I hate it when it takes 95% of the novel to reach that first scene in the first chapter. Alas, even the last 5% at the end is unsatisfying. "Flight of Eagles" was much better.
Rating: Summary: Sean Dillon to the rescue (again!) Review: I call this type of book "popcorn for the mind", a refreshing mental interlude between my reading of weightier tomes. It requires no mental effort, just page turning every minute or so, to race along with the plot. It's not great literature, but I don't think Mr. Higgins intends it to be, he simply wants to entertain his audience, and to me, that's what he does! More of Dillon and Co., please!
Rating: Summary: Well worth the time Review: I dont want to have to work at enjoying a good story. Again Higgins at his best, non stop action and all the characters true Higgins fans have come to love. This was the 36th Higgins book I have read and cant wait for the next one.
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment! Review: I absolutely love Higgins' books and could never put them down. I signed up with our local library, months before Day of Reckoning was to be released, so that I could be one of the first to read this book. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. I kept giving it another 50 pages to get better but that never really happened. The characters were just shells, the dialogue was downright boring, and the situations were contrived and lacked any spark. I hope Mr. Higgins will redeem himself in his next writing!
Rating: Summary: Skip this book! Review: This has got to be the most shallow and contrived book that I have read in my adult life. I've commented to my wife several times that this book is written at a 5th grade level. The characters are developed only superficially at best. You never feel any connection at all to any of the characters. "Hokey" is the word that comes to mind that best describes the plot and action in the book. This is a real disappointment
