Rating: Summary: THIS IS ONE HELL OF AN EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I am a horror fan. I read so many books a year and none have captivated me as much as the Damnation Game. I love this book. I love Barker's wonderful vision. I love the way he shares his vision with us and I just hope they never make a movie out of it because that would ruin everything this book stands for. This is my absolute favorite book of all time. Excellent.
Rating: Summary: My favorite book. Simply the best horror novel ever. Review: From the beginning, this book grips readers and doesn't let go. Reading this book was one of the best experiences of my life. I loved the dark tone, graphic detail, and awesome ending. Clive Barker knows the dark side of human mind very well, and he lets all hell rip loose here. I know I will take some scenes from this book to my grave.
Rating: Summary: Barker BEFORE he refined his excellent writing skills Review: What is all the fuss about? This book, although somewhat enjoyable, is by no means a knockout. If you are like me and can't stand wasting time reading anything but the best, you probably won't like this book. It drags and the story isn't all that interesting to begin with. (Remember the movie Nightbreed by Barker?) However, if you really don't demand much from a novel and like your books to flow like a good all-around movie, read away. This is no where near Barker's best work. Writing doesn't get much simpler than this. (Compare it to The Great and Secret Show and, ideas aside, you would think it was a totally different writer) Still, I will give it this: I did finish it. But then again, being one of his first full-length novels, I wasn't really expecting much to begin with. I started reading because I was curious to what it was about. Sadly, by the end of the book I was still wondering.
Rating: Summary: Scary is an understatement. Review: I read this book in three days, and it scared the pants off of me. I read Blatty's "The Exorcist" two days before it, and "The Damnation Game" put that one to shame.
Rating: Summary: absolutely disgusting, but oddly intriguing Review: Folks, don't eat before reading this book. It truly made me sick to my stomach. I am truly amazed at the way Clive Barker can describe gore...This is the first book of his that I have read, and I was not all that impressed. The plot is really choppy, and at times it really drags. However, it is absolutley unique, and when it actually get s scary, it is SCARY. Barker sure does have imagination, but the book could have been written better.
Rating: Summary: Barker takes a different approach Review: In a different approach to normal for Clive Barker, this book takes a slightly lighter note. It builds on suspense instead of the normal approach the barker takes, and you really feel for the Strauss by the end of the book. It has some good twists and is definitely worth reading. The concept and ideas behind the story are brilliant. Coupled with such a good name for a book!
Rating: Summary: Barely worth finishing. Review: While this isn't amoung the worst books I've ever read, it is one of the worst that I ever finished. As an avid fan of the horror genre, I was anxious to enjoy the first novel of the writer everyone was talking about. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I found myself hoping that it would get a little worse so I could justify not finishing it.
Rating: Summary: utterly disturbing-a must read!!! Review: the inner workings of barkers creative style manipulate the mind as if you are almost there.
Rating: Summary: WOW!!!!!! A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!A GREAT START!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: Wow! Barker's first book, and the first of his I've read and that's all I can seem to say; Wow! I think I've found a new author to enjoy now that Stephen King is about to retire.
Rating: Summary: A Fantastic Achievement! Review: This book introduced me to Clive Barker's world of horror and illusions and though I've read all his books subsequently this one is my all-time favourite. It is an astonishing vision of horror and pure evil. The main character of this book - Mamoulian is probably the most devilish character I've ever encountered in any horror story so far. The Damnation Game is a brilliant horror masterpiece, a must-read!
