Rating: Summary: The best of contemporary Cold War fiction! Review: Demille's "The Charm School" has been hailed by the Washington Post, "Contemporary Cold War fiction doesn't get much better than this." And I am sure most readers will agree. It has all the charms (no pun intended!) of the old classic Cold War novel but the insightfulness of the true post-Cold War fiction. Like the sarcastic Air Attaché-spook Sam Hollis, the spy-groupie embassy worker Lisa Rhodes and sadistic KGB Colonel he brings to life, Demille's Charm School is realistic, thoughtful, poignant and tragic.
Rating: Summary: POWs and the KGB Review: Mr. DeMille returns to familiar ground - Korea/Viet Nam and the POW/MIA question. He comes up with an explosive combination that the KGB has brought these hapless Americans to a camp where they train KGB deep cover agents to be Americans. It is an insidious concept that has the ring of truth. This is a high stakes adventure where both sides of the superpower equation press the bubble to the breaking point. The constant danger is just around the next dark corner, and treachery is right behind. Another tremendous book!
Rating: Summary: The Charm School Review: I have read 8 of 11 Demille Books. This one was das definately his best in my opinion. I rushed through this book finding it extremely hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: msavage Review: Great book!! This is the first DeMille book that I have read. I can't wait to read the next one I've ordered. If you like spy stories set in the Cold War era, you will love this one.
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Review: If you find a way to transport your memory back to 1988 while reading this book it will be so much better. It deals with some very nasty issues that get to the heart of the Cold War between the U.S and U.S.S.R. Demille's concept of a secret training school in Russia, run by the KGB with U.S. POW's as Instructors, teaching KGB agents how to be "American" is chilling. I enjoyed Demille's writing style more than Tom Clancy's. Clancy is much more TECHNO and I found Demille's style more HUMAN while dealing with the same type of issues and characters. This one is worth reading and the material is so unique that it won't be quickly forgotten.
Rating: Summary: Great Spy Thriller Review: If you like Tom Clancy style drama, the books, not the new movie with two many adaptations to make it worth watching. this book is for you. Great storyline, thriller from cover to cover.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Books I Have Ever Read Review: Maybe it is my life overseas as an Expatriate, or maybe it's the feelings that go along with having a clear enemy again like communism after the World Trade Center attack, but I thought The Charm School was one of the best books I have ever read. The author captures the Expatriate experience perfectly, the camaraderie, isolation, the missed foods and missed loved ones. The love triangle is handled with gentlemanly tension. The events in the book are even more haunting in a post-September 11th world. I became a fan after reading Plum Island, and there were tears in my eyes when I finished this book. Fantastic!
Rating: Summary: My Top 5 Review: A great read and really makes one wonder if things like this happened. I would guess yes, but the fact that the book made it seem so "real" even today made it more thought provoking.
Rating: Summary: The Charm School Review: Excellent. Filled with action and suspense - good to the last page. I highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: One of the Greatest Review: As a huge Demille fan I must say that this is one of the best books he has written.Demille combines sharp humor with suspene and a well educated background and understanding of Russia, its people and its culture. This book ranks as one of his best right along side The Gold Coast and The lions Game.
