Rating: Summary: Don't Judge This Book By Its Cover Review: I thought at first -- wrongly -- that this book would essentially be "Bridget Jones Gets Engaged". However, stepping into the shoes of Ms. Jones is a negatively neurotic woman who thinks about almost anything but being happily engaged. I thought I might read about her comic adventures in everything related to being engaged (picking DJs, a place for the reception, deciding the guest list, etc. etc.). Instead, the "heroine" broods about all of her relationships (fiance and otherwise) throughout. Unless you're miserable and want some company, skip on to another book and save those precious, irretrievable hours of your life for something more enjoyable."Those who can, do. Those who can't, criticize."
Rating: Summary: Fabulously funny! Review: From the moment I read the book jacket in the store, I was laughing out loud! As a 30-something woman dealing with similar relationship issues, this book surely hit home! Hilarious ancedotes and witty dialogue makes it a must-read - I'm planning on sharing it with a soon-to-be bride..GREAT!
Rating: Summary: Trash, but not in a fun, trashy way Review: This character woman falls off of her tricycle early in the book and never recovers enough for me to feel any compassion for her. There is a line between humor and stupidity, and this book not only crosses it, it breaks in in half. The line, actually, is not all that thin. I can be amused and entertained by many different ideas, satires and scenarios. Unfortunately, the writing style of this disaster throws you through the hoops without you wanting to go there. The lead character is someone whom we all know leark in the corners of our civilized society but someone we hope we never get to know. The character herself struggled to be funny, but it wasn't written well enough to compare with a book where the character, although perhaps without friends and without morals, was still endearing to us. This was trash, to be reviewed as such.
Rating: Summary: What a fun book Review: A really honest and yet fun book. A skillful blending of laughter and tears. Terrific read!
Rating: Summary: Do I have to? Review: The two phrases in the book that sum it all up are: "maybe we should get engaged", (he seems to mumble it as if it were a hateful chore like "maybe we should go to the supermarket") and "do I have to do it now?" which to me would be all a guy would have to say before I would know the relationship was doomed. The character of this book, though, takes what she can get and runs with it. She then starts her plans for a wedding that begins a nauseating journey of grumbling and moaning until the "big" day. No thank you.
Rating: Summary: This is one of the best books I have ever read. Review: Suzanne Finnamore does an amazing job of capturing the inner thoughts that everyone has, but no one ever says out loud. This book makes you laugh out loud. I did not want it to end. I miss reading it.
Rating: Summary: it's laugh out loud Review: I laughed out loud, pausing in my read only to recite sections to my husband (and, yes, he laughted, too). Yes, it's catty and biting, but, honey, so was I during my engagement. And then some. That's part of what made this book so human. Here's a woman who lost it to the engagement monster and lived to tell. I saw myself and my friends in this book (by the way, while some of them may be perfect, I am most certainly not), and I laughed and smiled and even cried. I am sending copies to everyone I know. I ADORED it
Rating: Summary: Understated Review: I am in advertising and the parts of Otherwise Engaged that described the madness and pettiness of the AD world made me laugh. It is SO TRUE. I have a feeling Finnamore could have told a lot more than she said about that dream factory. Great book for just plain fun reading.
Rating: Summary: Refreshing and funny Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this humorous novel regarding love and commitment. I could totally relate to the "neurotic" sentiments of Eve's character. This book is a funny, witty and candid view of "till death do us part". I will anxiously be awaiting Suzanne Finnamore's next novel on the subject of marriage and children - please don't keep us waiting too long!!!
Rating: Summary: Bad Review: This book was a bad illustration that women have such a lack of self esteem lately that they will trap a mate, even if that person is not right for them. This made for depressing reading. Nothing much good to say about this story, or the writing style, for that matter.
