Rating: Summary: How's that again? Review: I was brought up in a household that carried the idea that being single was not a disease. As any other well-educated, independant woman will agree that this book is an insult for the rest of us. I would rather read a depressing novel about any woman that died alone rather than marry someone just to get that ring on her finger. This single-phobia has to end.
Rating: Summary: Sadly Over-rated Review: This book is certainly a silly and overbearing account of a woman's lonely view of a desperate world. There was no reason to spend any time with a character like this.
Rating: Summary: No comparisons Review: I don't know why people keep comparing Otherwise Engaged with Bridget Jones. Bridget is a good book but Otherwise Engaged, at least for me, is a pretty accurate picture of what single, professional women my age go through in our mating game. I haven't found my "Michael" yet, but when I do you can be sure I will be remembering quotes from Otherwise Engaged. Like, "a sock on the floor is a sock FOREVER on the floor". Loved it!
Rating: Summary: Funny? Review: I only got halfway through before I decided that if it was going to be funny I would have laughed by then. I found it flatly depressing.
Rating: Summary: Truly Witty Review: It is not often you can read a book and find a laugh or moving moment on every page. Otherwise Engaged fills the bill for a few hours to be lost in laughter.
Rating: Summary: Sweet, funny and absolutely truthful... Review: Got this book knowing that it was about Eve (the main character) being engaged but had no idea that the book was all about being engaged. Anyway, in the meantime (while still waiting to receive my book from amazon.com) I got engaged! Funny enough, as I started reading it I could soon relate to everything she was feeling.A perfect book! Well written, it goes directly to the point. Even if the reader is not in the position of being engaged should still read it and have a lot of fun!
Rating: Summary: Never Mind Review: Do yourself a favor and pass on this self absorbed annoying book. I did everything I can to try to "learn to love" the main character, but it wasn't worth the effort. I was insulted from the first of this trite and insecure account of an over-fed woman roping in a husband.
Rating: Summary: One of the best.. Review: I loved it! I laughed out loud many a time...and yes... women think like this...at least the women I know...and also myself...it was like listening to me...and my friends...I recommended it to all my friends...and I was so sorry to see it end...If I could be an author...I would wish that I could write like this!!
Rating: Summary: Interesting but a hard read. Review: I found the writing style of the author hard to read. She jumps around too much and it's hard to follow. Seems to be written in a diary-like format; too choppy for that. Contents of the book is interesting, hard to keep with it because of the writing style.
Rating: Summary: Sapre yourself--buy "Bridget Jones" instead Review: I take back everything I said about Sidda Walker from "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" being the most annoyingly self-absorbed protagonist ever created. There's nothing funny or endearing about Eve, a hot-shot yuppie ad exec whose favorite activities seem to be whining and popping Valium. Michael, her fiance, isn't exactly a prize, himself. Neither one of them evoked any sympathy; they were on my nerves not 20 pages into the book. I'll give Suzanne Finnamore credit for coining a clever phrase here and there, but she pushed the sarcasm and dark, edgy humor way too far. That and her choppy writing made "Otherwise Engaged" very tiring. For something truly funny, check out "Bridget Jones' Diary" instead.
