Rating: Summary: Great one liners Review: What a fun book - Finnamore has so many one liners that bring up laughs - like when she talks about "Michael" having been married before and she feels so second - "It's so Nancy Kerrigan" Fun, fun book with lots of surprises.
Rating: Summary: a laugh-out-loud narrative many women can relate to! Review: Some readers may not like this book because it is so honest! ....Otherwise Engaged presents a witty summary of one woman's experience as she journeys toward the alter. Her story includes not only the sweet, romantic moments, but the more irritating, every day events that make one stop and wonder "do I really want to marry HIM?" This kind of questioning is the way Eve prepares herself for marriage. Eve comes to realize, along with her readers, that marriage requires the acceptance of both the cute AND annoying things one's fiance does! That's just a reality, and the author does a wonderful job of illustrating it. The question is...can you live with those idiosyncracies "for the rest of your life?"
Rating: Summary: A depressing book that does not deliver... Review: I thought this book would be a witty and funny take on what it's like to be engaged. Instead, I found it to be quite depressing! Any woman who would stay with a man who says she probably drove her abusive ex-boyfriend to hit her is not someone I have much respect for. The immature way that Eve takes off her ring every time she's annoyed with Michael is also proof of this. Personally, I don't see how this book is humorous at all...if this is what being engaged is like, I'd rather stay single.
Rating: Summary: Covert Art Misleadingly GIRLIE -- Needs Blood & Wedding Cake Review: Imagine eating a really rich, creamy custard. Now imagine gorging yourself on a ginormous mountain of eggy, milky goop as fast you can. That's what this book is like. It is HI-larious and whiny from the start, but it just becomes too much, and then you put down the book and marf up your lunch because you just want her to mellow out, shut up, and do something else.
Rating: Summary: Meow Review: I for one liked this book, read it in just two sittings and passed it on to at least four or five friends in my office. The style of the prose is surprising and fresh, my only complaint is that the ending seemd abrupt....yet marriage is abrupt, I guess. All these comments about women and feminism seem out of place : it's a novel, not a billboard. Also it seemed to me that Eve was constantly questioning the institution of marriage, not blindly charging forward with stars in her eyes. Gutsy and fun.
Rating: Summary: Just say yes Review: Honesty, hilarity, and well written to boot. I loved Eve and Michael and fully related to their travails.
Rating: Summary: Loved it Review: I can't understand why anyone could not love this book! It's funny, intelligent and so original it took my breath away. HIGHLY recommended!
Rating: Summary: What was the point? Review: I'll give this book some credit: Some parts were funny, others were sad, and I'm sure some bride-to-be out there can relate. However, I thought, "Geez, woman! Get a grip! You're getting married, not executed! Get over your whiny self!" This book was actually depressing to read. I finished it because it wasn't horrible, but three stars is all it really deserves. Actually, 2 1/2 stars, but there isn't a selection for that. If this book was any longer than 209 pages, I probably would've had to force myself to the end. If you are engaged and really excited and optimistic about it, please don't read this book.
Rating: Summary: Scary... it reminds me alot of my engagement... Review: This book describes all the emotions that runs rampant through someones mind when they are faced with the impending hell of nuptual bliss. From the receiving of the "rock" to the walk down the aisle, you will not want to put this book down. I await Suzanne Finnamore's next novel.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious, witty, tender...and yes, neurotic. Review: It'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry -- unless you're like some of the humorless prisses who have littered this review field with their stern little one-star grenades ("sha-BOOM! That oughta fix her!"). For everyone else, those readers with a sense of humor, "Otherwise Engaged" is a consistent delight, cleverly crafted and full of brilliant little character sketches. Thank goodness there's another Finnamore novel on the way.
