Rating: Summary: could not wait... Review: I was going to wait for the paperback of Otherwise Engaged but got tired of hearing about it and not having it. I bought it. Worth every dollar. What a fun, wicked and honest book.
Rating: Summary: Love story Review: I'm telling you, this is one funny book. I laughed and cried until the end. My only complaint is that it was too short! LOVED the Jill character and the advertising satire. An enjoyable and fast read. Very easy to recommend this.
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT Review: I picked this book up at the airport and was delighted with its witty and fresh company throughout my flight to New York. If laughing out loud is any indication, this author knows what she is doing. Sharp observations in a well-written format...Knopf houses some of my favorite authors, including Elinor Lipman, Lorrie Moore and others. Bravo!
Rating: Summary: Gives women a bad name Review: An interesting premise--to write about a year-long engagement--but did the heroine have to be so hideous? I felt sorry for the man she was marrying. After all the weddings I've been party to, I don't remember one bride being this bad (and I've dealt with some kooks). I can't imagine another 36-year-old on this planet behaving in such a 21-year-old fashion. Many reviews out there are saying this book is as good a read as Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Bank. Save your money!! Bank's book identifies with single women FAR better than this one!
Rating: Summary: Not necessarily a "chick" book Review: one of the things I have been hearing is that this is a "chick" book. Well I am an engaged man and I totally related to "Michael". I found him to be a real role model. After all, not every man can stay with a woman who is turning into Medusa. "Michael" comes off as a man who really knows, undersands and loves his woman. Lucky guy!
Rating: Summary: A Word To The Nay-Sayers Review: While many of the reviews below praise Ms. Finamore's debut novel, a number have condemned the book because of a dislike for the protagonist. Granted, the narrator does suffer from a number of acute neuroses, but please consider the following: The quality of a novel is not determined by how likeable its characters are. Rather, a well drawn character in a well written novel will stir something within the reader. Whether you were moved enough to feel sympathy and compassion for the protagonist, or dislike and revulsion, the fact remains that you WERE moved, enough to decry a fictional character in a public forum. Based on that fact alone, the author has succeeded. As a man, and an author, I found Otherwise Engaged to be delightfully written, and incisively accurate. If I personally found the protagonist to be a little whiny and self-indulgent, it is a tribute to her creator that I related to the character on a personal level. Congratulations to Ms. Finamore on a wonderful novel.
Rating: Summary: I can relate Review: As a man who also made the mistake of letting my "bride" extend our engagement for a year, I can totally relate to the frustration poor "Michael" encountered as he watched his beloved turn into a 3 headed Hydra. Between who to invite and not invite and all the other stuff, it made going to Reno for a quickie marriage look good. Great read and very real and very, very funny.
Rating: Summary: A laugh a page Review: It is not often that I have read a book that brought forth so many chuckles per page. The manner in which the author brings these yuppy characters to life is a joy to read. Good work.
Rating: Summary: easy vacation read Review: A nice read, humorous portrayl of the insecurites and doubts that go along with relationships. The book reads like a diary however, choppy with it's fragmented plot. Obviously meant to be humorous, not deep, but worth the read if you have a few hours to kill.
Rating: Summary: Plug for Tiffanys Review: I love all the references to Tiffanys. The author has a neat way of shining light on pompous institutions as well as the false expectations we all have of what marriage is really about. Good book and an entertaining read.
