Rating: Summary: The Highest Compliment - It Made Me Laugh Review: I'm an avid reader of non-fiction, history and politics. I generally would avoid a book like "Otherwise Engaged," but I'm glad I followed my wife's recommendation in this case (she said it was almost as good as a Dove Bar). I found this book not only well written and entertaining, but downright hilarious! I mean "tickle me till I turn red" and "pee my pants" funny! A tip of the ole hat to Ms. Finnamore for making this forty-something white guy laugh out loud.
Rating: Summary: Great Disappointment Review: After seeing a bunch of rave reviews on here I can not express the greatness of my disappointment with this book. I truly had to force myself to finish it. I hated the main character who complained about everything throughout the entire book - a little shock, some crazy thoughts, worry - sure that's all part of being engaged. But this thing was beyond belief. She was living with the guy, they had been dating for three years, according to the text he's just this perfect specimen and she is made a partner at her advertising firm and making six figures but all she does is whine about being engaged! I found myself finishing the book only because I was hoping she would get dumped. Please don't waste your money - if you feel you must get this book at least wait for a cheaper paperback version.
Rating: Summary: Just OK Review: I know alot of readers felt that this book was "FUNNY!", "HILARIOUS!", etc., but as one who reads quite a few of "these kinds" of books, I thought that it was just OK. For one thing, it was obvious to me, from the first page to the last (as I think it would be to virtually any other man reading this), that this woman had BAD NEWS written all over her. She should have worn a sign that said: "MEN BEWARE! I am very high maintenance, moody, manipulative and depressed. Enter my world at your own risk!" But then I got to thinking: I wonder whether the women reading this (i.e. probably 95% of the readers) would have a totally different reaction to her, such as: "I want to be friends with this woman!" "I empathize with this woman!" "I AM this woman!" I would guess that the answer would be yes, which may account for the many superlative reviews. I guess it all depends on your perspective.
Rating: Summary: She Spoke My Mind Review: Being an engaged woman, with less than four months to go, I repeatedly found myself nodding along with Eve's emotional roller coaster. This book is a must for anyone who's engaged and feeling like they're alone in their fear of "FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE". I can't wait to see what Suzanne has for us next!
Rating: Summary: great first novel Review: The author brought the characters to life. What a delightful, honest and fun book. Let's hope we hear more from this author.
Rating: Summary: Gut splitting Review: My wife kept shoving this book in my face. I thought it was it was going to be what one might insultingly call "a chick novel". Instead, it is at once a fall-down laughing, moving and ultimately killer read.
Rating: Summary: Marvelous and fresh Review: This book compelled me to read it in three sittings -- I truly loved both the original and crisp style of the writing and all of the characters. I wish it could have lasted 500 pages. I especially appreciated the compassionate and yet humorous handling of the Dusty character - I honestly felt I knew him. The Jill character definitely had the best lines, although each page held delight, no matter who was speaking. I look forward to see what Ms. Finnamore does next, and I am recommending this book to every woman I know.
Rating: Summary: Superfluous & Vapid Review: I was utterly disappointed and occupied by constant urges to throw this trite work in the trash. I was captivated by the synopsis (bravo to the book jacket copywriters) but spiraled into deeper and deeper shock as I read page after page of stop and go paragraphs. Ms. Finnamore found it imperative that she pack a punch in the final sentence of EVERY SINGLE paragraph. This was distracting and made me intensely upset. I stopped reading the last sentence of each paragraph which lifted the dread a bit. 1/10 as witty as the TV Guide and only half as enlightening. Avoid at all costs. The only character that was real was Graham and the only moment that felt genuine was when they all discussed sleeping habits. Contrived and superficial. YUCK!
Rating: Summary: Funny as hell! Review: I have never laughed as hard when reading a book the way I did with Otherwise Engaged. The heroine took us step by step through the emotions that took place after she becomes engaged to her long-term boyfriend Michael. Remembering her abusive relationship with an athlete, to the death of her father and step-mother to the death of her sick friend. She also experienced pre-wedding gitters and had cold feet. The one-liners were brilliant and Suzanne's writing is precise. Buy Otherwise Engaged, I also recommend The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing and In the Drink.
Rating: Summary: The girl's guide to funny Review: This is SOOOOOO much better than The Girls Guide To Hunting And Fishing. I bought that first and read it and liked it alot, a real lot. So then I bought this book because Amazon said it was similar. Anyway, I think this book is so much funnier! I wish she had other books out.
