Rating: Summary: Absoutely nail biting thriller Review: Rumors abound in twentieth century academic circles that in the sixteenth century, a contemporary of Machiavelli wrote a treatise on how to rule the world that makes The Prince look like an elementary school primer. The book, On Supremacy, was considered so harsh, the Pope killed its author and banned the printing of its content. An ultra-conservative group, headed by the mysterious Overseer, plans to implement the book's guidance so that they can establish a new world order built on their concept of society. While most people from Gibson to Roberts to others reject a conspiracy theory, Fed Sarah Trent and Columbia University professor Xander Jaspers realize that an evil plot to homogenize the world under the cabal's rule is happening. They know that the only way to stop the group from succeeding is to obtain a copy of the infamous Eisenreich manuscript and expose the identity of the Overseer. The incredibly brilliant story line turns THE OVERSEER into one of the best political thrillers of the decade. The out-Machiavelling of The Prince comes across as genuine with a real historical feel to it. Though the lead protagonists seem to be captured and un-captured a bit too much, Jonathan Rabb has written a thriller that will remain popular way into the new millennium. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: The political thriller for the turn of the Millenium Review: The Overseer is an exciting first novel by a talented young writer, Jonathan Rabb, who has crafted an amazingly accomplished thriller about how an obscure manuscript by a 16th century monk on how to seize world power can have terrifying modern-day implications. Jonathan has managed to write a compulsively readable thriller with the pace of a Robert Ludlum or Michael Crichton novel that also works as a novel of ideas. We were drawn to this novel because Jonathan was able to write a thoroughly exciting, contemporary thriller that was based on 16th century political theory. His fictional monk, Eisenreich, writes a manuscript that takes Machievelli several steps further as a masterplan for creating chaos and a new world order. When Jonathan was a third of the way through writing The Overseer he realized he couldn't continue his thriller without fully developing Eisenreich's theories. Thus, he wrote a "16th century" document called On Supremacy which appears at the end of the book as a fascinating supplement to the narrative. This is not a dry piece of incomprehensible theory, and The Overseer is not an overly complicated book with too much esoteric material. Instead, it is a truly smart thriller with government conspiracy, global intrigue, historical facts, intense chase scenes, diabolical villians, and an extremely appealing pair of heroes--Xander Jaspers, a naive young professor who gets pulled into the confusing, increasingly deadly turn of events, and Sarah Trent, a troubled government agent with a violent, mysterious past.
Rating: Summary: Classic conspiracy fiction Review: This book reminded more than a little of Robert Ludlum's AQUITAINE PROGRESSION (among others of Ludlum's). This isn't a bad thing, as Rabb has done a nice job updating the concepts and finding new twists for them. I'd wager he's been inspired by Ludlum too, because he has the same kind of hero-caught-in-a-vast-conspiracy style that hooks you and won't let go. Plot comes fast and furious (a little too fast actually, the multiple characters all start to blur) and I was swept into the story. A nice first outing for Rabb. If he keeps this up, he could be quite a thriller writer the 2000s (or whatever the heck you call the next decade).
Rating: Summary: Should have showed more of the Eisenriech teaching.. Review: this book started out good, but there were too many characters to keep track of, and not enough scenes in which the actual terror of Eisenriech training was described. Only the viewing of the videotaped classroom sessions were of great detail. Overall, readable, but I would say a must-read. i could have done without it.
Rating: Summary: Great read! Review: This book was a lot of fun. Perfect for the beach, although there were times when I had to reread some of the philosophy to figure out what was going on. Rabb writes well. There's a great pace to everything. I can't believe someone thought this was boring...not at all. I read it in two days. Couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: Wow! The next great thriller writer has arrived. Review: This book was fantastic. You hear it all the time, but I couldn't put it down, literally. At 4 am when I finally finsihed it, I couldn't believe I'd stayed up so late. I've never been someone who reads philosophy or old political manuscripts, but Mr. Rabb made the theory of "On Supremacy" so real that I couldn't help but get caught up in it. This is a great story that if you think about it, could actually happen. That's what makes it such a good book. I can't wait for his next one.
Rating: Summary: Gripping from start to finish Review: This is a truly outstanding book that I guarantee you'll have trouble putting down. The remarkably compelling story transported me into an exciting and dangerous world the likes of which I could never have imagined. I actually felt nervous butterfilies in my stomach anticipating each ingenious twist and turn. Hands down, "The Overseer" is the best novel I've read in years.
Rating: Summary: Intriguing Review: This is not just a novel to enjoy but also something to think about. A very powerful group of people, with the objective of build a new society create chaos in all levels of the society throughout economic, political, social and cultural crisis. As I said before, this is a novel to think about because this "master plan" that Mr. Rabb gave us in his "Eisenreich Manuscript" have being applied in many of the Third World Countries in some way destroying national economies, shaking societies and classes, creating political and religious turmoils and tensions, etc. Watch out, it most be true.
