Rating: Summary: A great book for young aspiring literary minds! Review: As a college English major struggling with my own writing process and writing about memories from my childhood, I still go back to this book for what Julie learns from her Uncle Haskell about writing--write what you know. This is just a great book about growing up and finding one's own voice, moral views, and inner worth. I have read books by many great writers, but it is books like this that I will always cherish.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful book Review: Hello my name is Julie and I am a student at West Virginia State University. I am taking a Children's Literature course where I had to read a Newbery Novel and this is the novel that I read. This story was very touching. I loved reading about Julie's growth and development. I would recommend this book to anyone but I am not sure if I would have my classroom read this book because it really would not reach every child in the room. Probably mostly the girls would relate. I would buy a copy of this book and have it on my book shelf.

Rating: Summary: Up a Road Slowly Review: I am a 7th grade teacher who uses this book as a novel in the classroom. It is a heartwarming story about Julie Trelling trying to understand the circumstances of her mother's death and having to live with her aunt that she doesn't really care for. It is amazing how you can watch the characters mature and grow into adulthood right before your very eyes. My class and I are very sad that the book is now out of print. It is a genuine classic.
Rating: Summary: one of the best Review: I first read this book when I was 11 yrs old and I recommend it to anyone. It's one of the best coming of age books that have ever been written. if your going to read it keep a box of tissues nearby. Every time I read it I cry a river.
Rating: Summary: An emotional book about growing up. Review: I have been using Up a Road Slowly in my 7th grade reading class for the last six years and I have never become tired of it. My students get so involved with the characters that they are disappointed when we finish it. It is amazing to watch Julie, the main character, mature and grow right before you're eyes. This book teaches valuable lessons to young readers. It is an excellent story!
Rating: Summary: Read it over and over and over... Review: I have not only read this book over and over, but I recommend it to all my friends and they come away with the same teary, totally impressed reviews that I have given each and every one of them. The book tells a wonderful story of a child who grows to womanhood in rural America. I loved Uncle Haskell and (as a child) thought Aunt Cordelia VERY unfair to "our Julia". As an adult, I can't wait for my own children to read and sob over it as I did. As with all books I love, I alternately wish that there was a sequel and thank God that there isn't. A definitely MUST READ!
Rating: Summary: The best book by Irene Hunt (reviewed by a 10-year-old fan) Review: I have read Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt and now I am reading Up a Road Slowly and Up a Road Slowly Is so much better than Across Five Aprils that I can't compare them. I can't wait to read her other books, I expect them to be the best books I have ever read. I love Irene Hunts books!
Rating: Summary: Irene Hunt makes life beautiful Review: I lent this book to my (former) best friend and never got it back! If that isn't a testament to how great this book is, what is? Since then I hunted down a copy of Up A Road Slowly again because it is a book you never forget. It is full of grace, beauty and a sense of timelessness. Even if your years of growing up were (are) a mess best left forgotten, you will love sharing Julie's years with her. All those things you noticed in life that no one ever caught the true essence of before, Irene Hunt does. If you like the depth and lovely characterization of shoujo manga (I know you are out there, right?) you will love this book! One of my three all time favorites.
