Summary: A very enjoyable book.
Review: It has been a few months since I read this book, but I remember enjoying it. I remember laughing a lot at some of the antics the women played to manipulate their husbands and leader into doing what they wanted. Sometimes I was frustrated by the unfair treatment of the women, especially Mirana, but lets face it - that is how men treated women then. I think coulter offers just enough of those situations to keep it believable. She also adds enough funny situations to keep the focus off of the mistreatment. There are some very interesting plot twists too. I think it is an enjoyable read. Some people try to think too much instead of just "listening" to the story.

Summary: Easy to read but left me feeling bored.
Review: Not only was this my first Catherine Coulter novel, but it was my first book in the Historical Romance genre. The story kept my interest enough to finish the book but by the time I had gotten to the last 1/4 of the book, I was READY to be done with it. If you're looking for quick page turner, then this is a good choice. Or, if you're looking for something to do to pass the hours, this will definitely do it! But with so many good books out there to choose from, I'm wondering why I chose this one. Oh yeah, it was the Viking thing. I love vikings and it was interesting to see how she used words that were unique to what you'd think would be the way vikings would speak, but it wasn't enough. I don't feel like I got a "viking feel" as much as I'd hoped I would. Not sure if my expectations were too high or what...but this book left me feeling bored.

Summary: boring boring boring
Review: The characters were flat. I couldn't understand the motiviation behind their actions. One minute the hero and heroin hate each other and the next, they don't. The change of heart is not believable and one never feels any emotions. I found myself not caring about any of the characters, or what happens to them. Don't bother with this one.

Summary: First in the Trilogy
Review: The Lord of Hawkfell Island is yet another brillant novel from Catherine Coulter. The whole trilogy was excellent. No one book was better than the other. Beautifully written and researched. The love scences are as always tastefully written and very romantic. She is definitely my favorite author. I have read her books over and over again. I don't think that there is one out there that I have not read. No other Romance/Historical writer compares to her in my eyes.

Summary: Lord of Hawkfell Island
Review: This book is yet another enjoyable read. It's not as bad as others may think. Just like many novels, the hero (Lord Rolik) despises the heroine (Mirana) at the beginning but he unknowingly changes as the story goes. I was surprised by twists and turns til the very last pages. The secondary characters especially Entti add a lot of colors to the story. There are so many laughters. I like when Hormuze decides to dye Sira's silver-blonde hair with black color. A novel is a novel so don't think too much about reasonability and reality just enjoy it. Catherine Coulter will never disappoint you.

Summary: gone Viking!
Review: This book made me want to 'go viking' - in other words take a long trek away from it!

Why are people always so accepting of the 'fact' that men in early history 'must' have been cruel and stubborn, coarse and violent therefore it's ok for hero's in books to behave so.

I don't actually agree with any of that. Historical fact shows that men, then as now, could be caring, sharing beings who actually liked their wives and kids! William the Conqueror adored his wife as did John of Lancaster his Kathryn and Henry his Eleanor of Aquitaine.

So why did the hero here have to be so unsympathetic and the heroine so accepting of her treatment at his hands - human nature is diverse and being a Viking in the 8/9thC didn't make you any more liable to be a thug than living in the 21stC makes every man a saint does it?

I heartily agree with a lot of the other reviewers that for the author to subscribe to the idea that violent times create violent people and therefore 'Viking' must equate with thuggery is short-sighted and trite and boring to read.

Summary: dumb
Review: This has to go down as the most boring, dumb, and lame book Ihave ever read. Rorik is a wife beater, and Mirana, as strong as sheis, just takes it, then somehow manages to fall in love with him.

In general, I never know what to expect with Coulter's books. Sometimes they're superb, other times, they're like this one: you have to force yourself to finish the book.

Summary: Wonderful - Explosive - Great!
Review: This was the first of the trilogy. Be sure to read them all. Miss Coulter does it again. I couldn't put this book down. I can't get enough of her historical romances. I hope she quits writing the contemporary mysteries and returns to this kind of writing!!

Summary: Stilted and boring dialogue
Review: Yuck - this is the very last book of Catherine Coulter's I will ever read. This Viking triology was awful. I can't believe I actually read through them all. There was no creative and entertaining dialogue. The dialogue between the characters was stilted and boring. I can't begin to describe it. I have to agree with all the other reviewers who gave these books poor reviews.

If you want to read an author who can actually drag in to the story, try Judith McNaught or Kathleen Woodiwiss. With these authors, you get an in-depth story about the characters, their lives, their feelings & emotions, their growth, their surroundings, etc.

Catherine Coulter does not describe her characters' actions as they're speaking. One does not know if the character speaking is speaking in jest, anger, softly, harshly or whatever. What do the characters' faces reveal when they're speaking? Are they gesticulating? What is their tone? What do their eyes reveal? You get NONE of this from Catherine Coulter. Be honest, when you're speaking with someone, all these things matter in how you yourself will interpret the words being spoken to you.

Her characters' conversations are hard to follow. You get long long paragraphs of one person speaking. For instance, in each of these three Viking triologies, several instances occur where one person is telling off another. Come on, NO ONE interuppted? This person was just able to ramble on and on and on without ONE SINGLE PERSON interuppting??? Yeah, right, these Vikings, rough and ready to fight as Coulter TRIES to describe them, would willingly let a person continuing mouthing off without stopping?? Get a little creative, Coulter!!

On the romance part, it was hard for me to believe in any of this Viking triolgy that romance would spring up between woman-abusers, no sharing, violence. This wasn't romance, as one other reviewer, it was about hate and violence.

Coulter should read some authors who have more depth, to see what writing is really supposed to be.
