Rating: Summary: Failed in Comparison Review: Although a big Catherine Coulter fan, I found this book quite disappointing. The plot did not stick together very well with a poor climax and cluttered ending. I've always seen this book laying around on bookshelves and now I know why.I enjoyed the heroines (Miranda, Entti, and Sira) but the heroes were trivial.
Rating: Summary: Great Viking romance Review: I always love Vikings. Ms.Coulter did a very great job. I loved all of the 3 books in her Viking trilogy. Lord of Hawkfell Island is a very entertaining read. There are exciting plots and warm sensuality. I would recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Wife-beating = romance? PUH-LEASE! Review: I got this book as part of a lot on ebay. Believe me, I wouldn't have sought out this monstrosity for itself alone. The historical accuracy and detail are great, hence the two stars for this book. Coulter really makes Viking times come alive, but if I'd read about the heroine getting socked in the jaw by the hero one more time, I was going to scream. It wasn't romantic - it was sick! Maybe women were pretty much treated close to that back then, but that doesn't make it palatable reading for today's woman. To have a romance book that fails in its most important mission - creating a story that makes the reader wish she had a love that great - is unforgiveable. Had I been Mirana, I wouldn't want Rorik anything BUT dead, and I would have made it happen, too. The fool had to sleep sometime!...
Rating: Summary: Captivating reading Review: I have read many of Catherine Coulter's books (maybe even all), but her novels set in Viking times are her best! She paints a picture of life as it must have been in those times. Rugged, yet romantic. Great reading by a fire or on the beach
Rating: Summary: Lord of Hawkfell Island Review: I just love this book.It tell a lot about how the Wiking lived. I liked the story.
Rating: Summary: Viking winner! Review: I love historical romances set in the Viking Age, and Catherine Coulter has done a brilliant job with the time period. It was very honest writing. And, phew, was Rorik a hunk or what! One of the sexiest heroes ever. If you liked this one, check out Johanna Lindsey's "Fires of Winter."
Rating: Summary: Falls a mile short of interesting! Review: I love romances, once I get them I usually can't put them down. This is the first book I've read from Ms.Coulter and it's my last. Rorik was an unsympathetic abuser who was found humiliating Mirana constantly throughout the book. Mirana was uninteresting. Their romance was practically nonexistent and they went from hating each other to loving each other in one chapter! Don't waste your time on this one!
Rating: Summary: Poor Example from a Great Author Review: I thought I would love this book...and out of all the viking series I did like it. But it was poorly written. I have seen that Ms. Coulter does rewrite some of her novels this is definitely one of them that needs to be reproduced.
She had one to many loopholes that aggravate me as the reader. I loved Miranda's character. In my opinion out of all her characters I've read, I've only liked Alexandra Sherbrooke as my ideal woman next to Miranda. What was disappointing there was not enough more combatative fighting between Miranda and those that kidnapped her nor just a visual between her brother and her.
Secondly with Miranda and Rorik...there was no romance. I cannot figure how a man moves from detesting the woman to deciding to marry her...although there was a small explanation or round about, mainly Rorik's thoughts on how strong she is and capable.
But besides the romance...the sex scenes were horrid. It seemed cold and clinical. There was no passion. Between Douglas and Alexandra, or even the Legacy/Brides/ and the rest of the Viking sagas..there was some kind of passion that gets you excited and into the hero. But Rorik was horrid as a lover and poor Miranda just seemed unimpressed..until she decided to take things into her own hands...and then she had to be ill before that was sucessful. So the quality of romance/passion was utterly lacking in this fic.
My main concerns would be to develop Miranda more and give her a bit more nuances, and expand on her fighting skills with a bit more action.
Another would be to definitely romanticise a bit of the sex scenes at least and give them a bit more loving relationship. That is not only based on a marriage of convenience.
I think those two would change things a great deal and really improve the book!
Rating: Summary: WHAT DID I EVER SEE IN HER? Review: I used to like Catherine's books a long time ago. That was before I met Woodiwiss, Lindsey(of old), Garwood, and McNaught. I recently read this book and wondered what I ever saw in her writing. The female has a very fluent air in her speech while her men talk as if they just learned a new language. It is stunted reading in the dialogue. This particular story had great potential, but it went sour after the third or fourth chapter. I don't know of any reader who enjoys the heroine being forced time after time to have intimacies, and be expected to forgive the hero, if he can be called that. The writing is a 1, but the story line that had potential is a 2. It wasn't until recently that I realized that Coulter uses a lot of violence to get her heroines under control of the male or rather to show the males dominance. Unsatisfying and bitter.
Rating: Summary: An Unforgettable Tale Review: It begins with Rorik, a Viking warrior bent on revenge who comes to Clontarf in search of his enemy Einar. He intends to kill Einar but since he is not there, kidnaps Einar's half-sister, Mirana, instead. From the moment she comes to Hawkfell Island nothing will be the same again. Mirana is a strong and intelligent woman, who fights with as much strength and cunning as a man. She is also courageous and proud-to a fault. She does not hesitate to defy Rorik and vows to escape but at the same time finds herself befriending the women of Hawkfell Island and learning why Rorik is filled with such hostility. Rorik can be stubborn and cruel but he IS a man after all. A man who has lived with pain and hatred and takes it out on Mirana. He is not evil but a strong and naturally good man. When he meets Mirana he discovers that life is not lived if lived in hatred. Lord Of Hawkfell Island is a wonderfully written novel. Written with enough character description and feeling! To me she conveys enough emotion and life into this novel as to make it captivating. The plot is full of surprises and even a little suspense. She is one of my favorite authors and this is one of her books that I would highly recommend. Catherine Coulter knows how to write romance, she is one of the best, Period.
