Rating: Summary: light, easy read Review: For a light, fun and easy to read book look no farther than this. While there is a lot of humor, quirkiness and tragedy in this book- it is very believable. After all, isn't that what all our lives have in common? The characters are people you would like to have living next door to you. I prefer to read non-fiction books, but this is one fiction book that held my interest. If ever a book should be described as a "summer beach read" this is that book.
Rating: Summary: A book with heart Review: This book is truly brilliant - intelligent, witty, and full of heart
Rating: Summary: finished it overnight Review: I kept seeing this book at the bookstore. I would read the back and think I might like it, but I would never actually buy it. My sister brought it with her for a visit and insisted I read it. I went through it overnight. I really did laugh and cry at it. (as trite as it sounds!)I think its a touching story, and funny particularly if you are a Scandinavian in the Midwest, or just know some! Even if you aren't or don't, it is a pleasant but not heavy book that takes you through a range of emotions and experiences, in the sincere and light hearted spirit of the character's conversations. I enjoyed the story, and saw many of my own experiences, friends, and relatives in it.
Rating: Summary: a book not for everyone ... But ..... Review: those who aren't reading a book hoping to seek deep insight into the mysteries of life presented by fictional characters may enjoy the humor on many pages as the 2 fictional sisters deal with the challenges that they felt their life dealt out their way. The descript of one sister's downward spiral was so accurate to those of us who may have known someone who lapsed into that same "escape outlet" ... yet I do wish the writer hadn't made one of the love figures for one of the sisters so reptitious feeling that you knew from the start that something would happen to him - so no surprise when you read the newspaper headline along with the main characters. The setting was as fictional as the characters but somehow I enjoyed this book to the point that I will admit it was "hokie" in parts but after reading it had to admit that I liked it overall and enjoyed the humor on many of the pages. What term I use for books like this is "Little House on the Prairie" moment feeling, where one minute you are laughing at the antics of the characters and the next - even though you saw it coming, you find yourself threatening to blink back a tear. The characters won't inspire you to go out and "conquer the world" but they may inspire you to laugh at times. This book is about the bonds between the women in the story line ... not as clearly defined or close in feel as The House On Olive Street characters were given, but considering this is a first book - shows potential for the future books by this writer.
Rating: Summary: What's now to like? Review: I'm glad I didn't believe some of the low ratings here. I very much enjoyed the book. In fact, I had trouble putting it down.
Rating: Summary: Patty Janes house of curl Review: I purchased this book because Ivillage said this was a good read. How wrong can someone be. I thought this book was so boring I couldn't wait to finish. I'll be more careful about my picks after this. To the many readers who liked this book I just don't get it.
Rating: Summary: HATED IT TO END! Review: Absolutely loved this book. While vacationing in Cape Cod this summer "Patty Janes House of Curl" got passed around from my grandmother, to me, to sisters, cousins, and aunts. We all felt the same about it. Hated to see it end but couldn't wait to pass it on!
Rating: Summary: Ugh Review: To say this novel is mediocre would be doing it a favor. Characters, plot, and writing are tiresome, unimaginative and pedestrian in that order. Save your brain cells (why did I waste mine? Some one in my discussion group recommended it)
Rating: Summary: Is there a space for negative stars? Review: I can only say that I am completely shocked that this book got more than one good review, much less dozens of them. This book was completely boring. Like another reviewer, I've just read the two Ya-Ya books and it's more like comparing a Rolls to a roller skate. I only wish that I hadn't spent actual money on it. It took me back to my high school days where I HAD to read something. I forced myself to read this, hoping it would get better, but I shouldn't have wasted my time. Absolutely the ONLY part not totally awful was the Epilogue, which I'm kind of thinking someone else must've written. If you want a summary of my feelings about this book, read every review with a star rating under a 2.
Rating: Summary: Great rainy day book...pass it along!!! Review: The chemistry between Patty Jane & Harriet made me wish I had a sister. They kept it together despite the fact that their parents were alcholics. The love that Avel Ames gave to Harriet is second to none.My heart goes out to little Nora she took care of a man she didn't even know,But grew to love and except. I can personally identify with her. This is the best book by a new author, can't wait for her latest novel.
