Rating: Summary: Screamingly funny! I laughed, I cried.... Review: Only a true southerner could understand the authors descriptions of each character personality. He was able to capture litlle nuances of personalities that are there but you just don't quite know how to explain them, brilliant.
Rating: Summary: What a delight! Review: When I started reading this book, I thought, "How gross!" I wondered how a book about a woman who cuts off her husband's head, stuffs it in a salad saver, and drives it and herself across the country to Hollywood could possibly be funny. This book is not only funny, it also carries some powerful lessons about race relations. I highly recommend this book. One reviewer compared it to Thelma and Louise. I have to say, it's even better!
Rating: Summary: A reaffirming experience. Review: Beyond the humor and eccentric characters is a nobel character, buried amid his insensitive, neurotic family. Dove Bullis is a good man with all the fine qualities that his family must have to survive Southern hypocrisy and bigotry and growing up. Although not everyone survives the oppression of the time, he rises above the chaos, and insurmountable conflicts to allow most of his family to escape homelessness, the death penalty, ridicule, dessertion and abandonment. He embodies humane and unconditional love and strength. Funny, yes! But it is so much more than that.
Rating: Summary: My new religion is Crazyinalabamatology, Review: I read this book for the first time in Semptember '98. LOVED IT. With the movie opening on October 1st '99 I renewed my interest in once again re-encountering my first memorable experience. I recently breezed through it again. I now remember why I loved it so much. Childress beautifully paints characters with his words. The contrast of the the characters and their lives provide an unusual spark to this story. Lucille's live for the moment approach is inispiring, as she pursues her dreams on a journey of emotional and sexual discovery. Peejoe's character provides the real drama for this book. I was definitely partial to his chapters. I am counting the days in anticipation of the movie. Mark Childress wrote the screenplay so we can expect a credible adaptation. I am a bit cautious of Antonio Banderas directing abilities, and Melanie Griffith's co-starring. Lucas Black (Slingblade, American Gothic)my favorite young actor, plays the pivotal role of Peejoe. I think he's gonna make the movie. But please everyone read the book first because I'm sure a lot of great stuff will have to be cut out because of time restraints.
Rating: Summary: Thank goodness for Mark Childress Review: Crazy in Alabama was the first book I read from this Monroeville native. I chose it because he was a Southern author from my very own state and closely linked to my favorite author of all time, Harper Lee. I was not dissapointed. I loved every second of this book and could not put it down to save my life! His discriptions were so real and exact--I know those people.
Rating: Summary: Really enjoyable Review: This is a great, fun summer-read kind of book. While it is silly at times, it is the type of book that you look forward to reading. I enjoyed reading it so much I almost skipped watching my favorite TV show to keep on reading(if you knew me, this would mean a lot).
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book! Review: I really enjoyed the character, Lucille! This book is a riot with meaningful political issues on civil rights. I highly recommend it! It would make a great movie! Thank you Mark Childress!
Rating: Summary: Funny, provocative, an easy read Review: I was told by a good friend that this was a funny book. Yes, there were some hysterical parts, but I found this to be much, much more. It was thought provoking and very touching. Anyone born in the 50's can truly relate to the events surrounding Dr. King's mission. GREAT READ.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining reading doesn't get much better than this. Review: I loved this book so much that I'm scared any book I pick up after this one will be a bore in comparison. I'm going to read everything else Mark Childress wrote.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful read about life and death in the 1950's Review: I loved this book. Mr. Childress's writing from a child's veiw and a woman's veiw is great. I loved how the act of deheaded Lucille's husband was taken so lightly because they are a family that makes their living from death. With the added racial tension this book is great. I wish there was more to it so I could see what Lucille and Peejoe did after this.
