Summary: A Review for Schwartz
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book because it had content that I was really interested in. It dealt with drugs which is a huge issue among teenagers. Also, it's very rare that you find a book that is inside the mind of a teenager who is "different" according to society. It didn't take very long for me to get into the book. It only took me about a page because right off the bat, he introduces himself and his life. After that's done, he goes into one of his many expeditions. The book was fairly easy to read. Most of the vocabulary was easy but there were some words that I don't think would have been used by an uneducated 14-year-old boy. A difficulty that I encountered, as would many other people, I believe, is the run on sentences. There are many of them. I don't know if it is because the author wanted to make it more confusing or because he wanted to make Chappie sound more real. In any case, the only way I found to be able to read this is by reading it over and over again until it finally sunk in. This book didn't remind me of anything. I had never seen nor read anything remotely like this book. That's what made it so interesting. I chose this book because I read a summary of it and when I heard that it had drugs in it, I said to myself that I had to read it. It's very rare that you get to read one of those books in school. I recommend this book for both male and female of all ages. If you want to read about how the life of a "punk" is, then I strongly suggest this book. It's not so much funny really but it is very entertaining if you like action books. You also have to have tolerance for illegal things because this book is full of it. "The new rule was basically don't bother your parents and don't bother the cops or one of them will sic the other on you, because to them, to all of them you're just another homeless stoned dropout dealing small-load boom to the locals." I chose this quote to show what the story is like because it efficiently shows how his life is. Aren't the cops and your parents the two kinds of people who you're always supposed to be able to depend on? If neither of them want you, what is life supposed to be like? That's exactly what this book shows. The life of a boy just trying to get through life, doing everything he's got to do.

Summary: Rule of the Bone
Review:

Rule of the Bone, by Russell Banks

The story about a young teenager, Chap who lives in the US. Growing up as a child is very hectic for him. He has problems with his mom and step dad and is a drop out from school. The boy goes on many adventures and wild rides. He meets a Rastafarian who becomes his friend. The guy changes Chap's view on life. Chap tries to survive on his own and as he encounters many problems in life. If I had to rate this book on a scale from 1-10 I would give it a 7. The reason is I didn't enjoy reading the whole book. There were things that weren't realistic for example the child had too many problems and I don't think many teenagers have this many problems. There were other things that I thought were nasty and some things that I think were cruel. It didn't take me long to get into the book because right from the beginning it was interesting. It was some what difficult to read because some paragraphs were a whole sentence but I got used to it. A person might have trouble with the teenage style writing but don't get frustrated. You will get used to it. I chose to read this book because it was about a teenager living in this time and I thought it would be interesting. I think it would be better if a person that isn't so emotional read this because many bad things happen. Also if you don't like cuss words or violence you shouldn't read this. I think it is more for teens. "Russ was in his crib with the door locked on the inside where he slept until late afternoon which he was he did because daytime was the only time the squat was quiet enough to sleep but I think he was starting to dip into the crank he was selling and liked to stay up all night yackety-yakking with his customers." In this quote you can see that the author is writing it the teenage voice with very long sentences. You can also see that he uses slang words that teenagers use nowadays. I liked how the author used slang words and used the teenage voice but I think it is hard to get used to paragraphs that are one sentence.

Summary: Rule of the Bone
Review: Hiroshi Okun Social Issues 4th Period Book Review In the book Rule of the Bone by Russell Banks, Bone (Whose real name is 'Chappie') goes through a lot of relationships between friends and family. The book starts off with Chappie stealing valuable coins from his mother and selling them at a pawnshop to make money for weed. His parents find out about this and become enraged. They decide to kick him out of the house and that's where his adventure begins. He goes through a lot of trouble with his best friend Russ and they travel through bus meeting new people everyday. He meets bikers, drug attics, and other weird people and goes through trouble. At one point of the book, he decides to live on his own surviving through life. As he lives on his own, he finds out who is real friends are, and his real enemies are. I really enjoyed reading this book because it had the most unique way of writing it. In this entire book, there were no quotation marks whatsoever. It was as if Banks didn't care at all how he typed up this book. This made it really easy to understand because it seemed like a real teenager was talking. Another reason why I enjoyed reading this book is because I really liked the plot. It was very interesting and you never knew what Bone (Chappie) was going to go through next. It was a big mystery who he's going to rely on and who he's going to meet. I really liked how this book related to teenagers; that's probably the best part of the book. This probably was one of my favorite books I've ever read. I really hate reading, but I actually enjoyed reading this book. I didn't have to read this book by the last minute like when I'm assigned a book to read for school. I just read this book on my spare time and I really enjoyed it. Bone really reminds me of another kid at school because he speaks and acts like how anyone of us does. He doesn't use any hard vocabulary and pretty much in every sentence he cusses and use a lot of slang words. There wasn't one hard part in the book that I wasn't able to understand. Everything was written in the perspective of a pothead teenager so I was able to understand everything he was saying.

Summary: Rule of the Bone
Review: Pat Briggs Social Issues Period 3

Book Review

Rule of the Bone by Russell Banks is a realistic novel of a homeless boy named Chappie. He lives a life of drugs and abuse that will drive a person mad. Chappie is a teenager with nowhere to go but the Video Den. Sleeping in an apartment with a biker gang above the video store each day is like the last, get stoned and break the law. Sounds like the life of a lot of teenagers in this world. This amazing story sounds like the author had lived the same life in the past. Rule of the Bone was a different story than I had thought it would be. When I read the first paragraph I was looking forward to it but it seemed to just go downhill from then on in. Though the story was a little interesting I didn't find the characters very likable until one man named I-man was introduced into the story. Another problem I found was that the author commonly used run-on sentences in his writing and it bothered me and made it more difficult to read. In a way this book reminded me of another book I read called Go Ask Alice. The only real connection that reminded me of it was all of the drug usage. Besides that they were pretty different stories. Over all if I were to rate this book on a scale on 1-10 ten being I liked it, I would rate it a 6. I decided that there wasn't enough going on in the story to be exciting. I really enjoy a book that is a page turner which is what the opposite of this book is. It could just be me so some people might enjoy it. If I were to recommend this book to someone it would be someone who knows someone or has lived on the streets and has had drug experiences. I know that isn't a very large margin but that's what I really believe it would appeal to. The following passage is the opening paragraph of the book. "You'll probably think I'm making a lot of this up just to make me sound better than I really am or smarter or even luckier but I'm not. Besides, a lot of the things that've happened to me in my life so far which I'll get to pretty soon'll make me sound evil or just plain dumb or the tragic victim of circumstances. Which I know doesn't exactly prove I'm telling the truth but if I wanted to make myself look better than I am or smarter or the master of my own fate so to speak I could. The fact is the truth is more interesting than anything I could make up and that's why I'm telling it in the first place." After reading this opening paragraph you really get a sense of the writers style. This paragraph drew me towards the book because I like the authors honestly and I have also always been a fan of a true story. After reading you can see that there are run on sentences and the author does have a very different style of writing. I chose this quote because you the reader can now decide if you like the style or not. It's up to you from here.

Summary: A modern day "Catcher in the Rye"
Review: Rule of the Bone By Russell Banks

A boy named Chappie, raised in a dysfunctional family, with his mom and his stepfather Ken, in a town named Au Sable. In Au Sable, Chappie is a troublemaker. He sells weed to local kids, with his good friend named Russ. Chappie ends up living with Russ after his parents and him, get in an argument on how they want Chappie to be a hard worker like his stepfather Ken. Russ lived with a biker gang, so Chappie had to keep them with weed, to be able to live there. The biker gang starts to involve Russ and Chappie, in plans for stealing electronics. The leader of the gang, Bruce, starts to develop a bond with Chappie. When Russ's home catches on fire, Bruce put his life on the line, to save Chappie. Bruce ends up getting burned beyond recognition. This is a key event to the out come of the book and it helps Chappie become I with I. I would rate this book a 9, on a scale of 1 to 10. When I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. The books kept me reading it, because I always wanted to know, were Chappie was going next. About a couple of pages into the book, I was instantly in love with it. It told the world of the story and the dialogue told it was going to be a smooth read. The language that was used fit the specifics of the characters. For example, Russ's stepfather Ken was meant to be a hard worker that demanded respect from everyone. The language gave a clear picture of him. The book is pretty easy to understand, till you meet the character that helps Chappie, become I with I. This character speaks in a Rastafarian accent and makes reference to Jah, an African god, a lot when you first meet him. Once you get to know this character, you will start to understand his way of life and start to discover I with I, of yourself. People say, that this book is the modern day "Catcher in the Rye." From the descriptions, people have said about, "Catcher in the Rye," this book is almost alike. Many people that come from dysfunctional families or not, will enjoy reading this book, because it takes you into the life of a person, living with abusive parents and how their misadventures, make them stronger as a person. This book uses good imagery. Here is a passage of the imagery used. "A drum was beating, real heavy and slow like thump, thump, thump, and it didn't let up or change, it just went on and on, a sort of sound track on a continues loop that seemed to come from the place itself the way the sound of the wind does, like it was coming out of the trees and fields and sky and not from outside. I feel that this book is required to read by all high school students, because all of the issues it covers.

Summary: SO ENLIGHTENING, SO AMAZING!
Review: As a person in high school, reading has never been such an interest to me, however Rule of the Bone was not only he best book I have ever read, but it truly touched me in a way that I thought no book could ever do. The richley developed character, Bone exoerianced a journey not only geographiclly, but an emotional journey as well. This path to self discovery moved me so much, I honestly could NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN, which I have to say, I never, EVER thought would happen to me. I even cryed so much throughout the book!Rule of the Bone was really GREAT!

Summary: a childhood guide
Review: This book, I could relate to, other books I just read. This book has great characters a great book for kids who don't really like reading. It will get them into it I have been reading ever since. I wanted there to be more so now I keep reding hoping to find another great book. Russel banks can touch kids and relayte to them kids can tell an elder or a fake trying to write like a kid. He (Russel Banks)uses slang terms that me and my friends say that when my mom hears she looks at me like were crazy. If you have kids or are one this a great book about an every day kid. If you want to get to understand your children and what they go threw then read this book it will make you understand them.

Summary: A Modern Huck Finn
Review: Presented to me as a modern version of the classic tale of Huckleberry Finn, I found that this novel is accessable to the young in a way that novels have never been before. This novel can revive a teenagers love of books, reading, and literature, without selling out to simple plot line and action. Banks is a superb writer who knows how the young mind works, and can, with the greatest of ease, explain it to others. This novel is recommended to those modern readers who can handle the misadventures of a contemporary city-youth.

Summary: All the young punks are growin' up fast...
Review: This shiny little yellow package may have singlehandedly saved my love of books. As a frustrated, dissheveled English major trying to graduate and fighing literary burnout every inch of the way, I didn't want to read, write, or even look at another book ever again...until the day I found a hardcover edition of this yellow book inexplicably placed in the bargain bin of the local bookstore. Wow! This may not be for everyone. This is not a misty-eyed, Oprahfied book with pastel colors and fancy lettering on the jacket cover. The clear, direct first-person narration hits like a much-needed kick upside the head. Gritty and honest (though the trip to Jamaica seems a little improbable), this coming-of-age story rings true more than any I've read. For the most part, Banks has done an astoundingly good job of getting into the head of a punked-out kid on the run. Read it. Easily one of my all-time favorites.
