Summary: School Review
Review: I thought that this was an incredibly good book. Since the first page I was sucked into feeling like I was actually in the book. Russell Banks is such a good writer and describes every little intimate thing with such detail. Rule of the Bone sort of reminded me of Catcher in the Rye. It started out as a boy living in a trailer park with a mom and step-dad. He gets into trouble because of drugs and his friends and is kicked out of the house. He then was forced to live in his best friend's apartment and deal weed to the other people living there. He meets plenty of different and weird people such as Buster the porno king, the bong brothers, the men of the Adirondack Iron, and I-Man. The sanest person of the whole book I thought was Russ, he was smart enough to go home even though he only went because there was no more weed and the summerhouse was a mess. I didn't really understand that girl Froggy that was with Buster Brown. I felt that it was very easy to relate to as a teenager. He didn't have my lifestyle but all of thoughts running through his head made me think that he was a very mature teenager. I think he probably had to be because of all the stuff he had to go through.

Summary: Rule of the Bone
Review: I do not even know where to begin. This book was unbelievably good. I, being a teenager about the same age as the main character, could find so many ways to relate to problems that were recurring on his journey.

This is a story about a fourteen year-old boy, named Chappie Dorset. He does small amounts of scattered weed dealing and is heavy into smoking it. He is more or less kicked out of his mother and stepfathers house, and spends a lot of his time with a good friend he has had named Russ who also does not live in his house. He has not seen his father since he was 5. Through the story he is almost constantly on the go. After his good friend bailing on him and going back to live with his family he meets a crazy cool Rastafarian man and from there he goes on to experience more things than most teenagers will ever have the opportunity to. The story ends with a little bit of hope for the young boy.

The book was really easy to read. The vocabulary was particularly relaxed from any complicated words. Although, the lack of creative words put you more in the teenage state of mind. I liked this book a lot, and it seemed mostly real to me. There were some times when coincidence had the up side to the situation, but otherwise Banks put a good overview on some things that go on in a teen's life. The story also made me sad because it feels so real in my mind, and no one should be living like that.

It was an overall great book and is something every (let alone teenager) person should read.

Summary: ~* kate petrone *~ RULE OF THE BONE
Review: this book was amazing. i'm usually not that much into reading, and im horrible at reading comprehension. but when i'm given something i enjoy i want nothing more than to read it. i couldnt take my eyes off this book. everything chappie goes through and has to experience is written in a way that i can understand. i know some people might have a problem reading the slang in it, but in my opinion, that makes it a hell of a lot easier for me to read. i'm very happy i found a book that intrigued me as much as this one did and i didnt feel like i was doing it under mandatory circumstances, i felt like i was reading it for pleasure which makes it so much more enjoyable. i reccomend this book to teens but as well to adults, because it might make it easier for an adult to understand a teens life (as bad as they come) from reading this book. I mean, if this book could grab my attention, it could grab yours.

Summary: Rule of the Bone
Review: The Rule of the Bone was a dramatic, twisting, and turning tale of a troubled youth tangled up in the world of drugs. His story was full of exiting and dangerous situations. The main character, Chappie, experienced more in his teenage years then most adults ever do. He got so addicted to drugs that he stole from his own mother to buy more, he ran away from home, he lived with a motorcycle gang, he sold drugs, he moved to the Caribbean, and many so much more. It's hard to believe that someone so young can screw up so much and make so many bad decisions. He gets himself into a lot of trouble and it's trilling to see what wrong move he'll make next.
This book is written in a manner that suites this kind of story perfectly. The vocabulary was easy, there is lots of slang witch makes it more authentic, and it was extremely suspenseful. I thought that the book could of used a little more excitement towards the end, but what are you going to do. When I first starting reading the book it was difficult to put it down. It started off as a true page-turner. Maybe this was his technique for sales purposes. Anyway I thought that his style of long flowing sentences was very unique and interesting. It seemed to help with the suspense by leading one thing to another.
I think that this book is absolutely worth reading. I think that it would be more appealing to a boy due to the violence and vulgar material but anyone could enjoy it. Out of five stars I would give it a three.

Summary: Rule of the Bone
Review: I really enjoyed ready the novel , the rule of the bone, by Rusell Banks Being a 15 year old , I can some what relate to Chappie(the main character). This book is a uniquely written story on a period of his life. Along the way you will meet and get to know many interesting and distrubed adolesents and adults.

Chappie comes from a somewhat abbusive family. His mother and step-dad are hardly ever home, and they only start worrying about him once he steals. Chappie runs away from home and gets invovled in a motorcycle gang. Through this gang he becomes and drug dealer, and a user himself. The story is very interesting and once you start reading you won't be able to stop.

The lanquage that Rusell Banks uses is kind of complex and hard to understand, but it slows you down and lets you enjoy the story more.I would not recommend this novel for children 13 and under.

Summary: Rule Of The Bone Review
Review: I really enjoed reading Rule of the Bone. It was very entertaining and kept me reading. I
always wanted to know more about Bone and what was going to happen to him next. I liked the
fact that it sounded as if you were really hearing Bones thoughts and feelings. I think its a great
book for teens because he goes through so many things that teens can relate to. It makes you
realize how hard some people have it and how this kid really has to tough it out all the time. I
always found my self feeling bad for Bone, and wanting him to get a break. He seemed to me like
he was a good kid who had just lost his way. I didn't like the way him and Russ were treated by
the bikers. It really bothered me how Russ even though he was younger than the bikers had to be
responsible for rent and what not. I felt that the kids had so much to worry about while the bikers
just did drugs and partied. I think the book really opened my eyes and let me see life from totally
different eyes.
The book really was emotion felt and gave me many different kinds of feelings. It was an
easy read; something that you could zoom through. I think that anyone could read it and like it
because there are so many different view points you can take. Overall the book was great and I
am really glad that I read it. I would recommend it for teens and older, and think it is something
so versatile that really anyone would like it.

Summary: Wasteland
Review: The book was stark, foul and unfolded like a long rap refrain. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger did a far more exquisite job that Russell Banks. A dysfunctional family, pederasty, drugs, tatoos, dishonesty and other immoral aspects come pouring out like water from a tap. This is definitely not a book to recommend to a 15 year old child thinking that it can create an interest in the love of books. The book caters to our negative instincts and leaves me circumspect with regards to why a writer and a notable one and that would think that a reader would rise above the filth that is laden in this book. If the author is out to prove a point, it was achieved very early on in the book. The dissolution of the American family is a tragedy. We learn as if we didn't know before that children left to their own devices will do very little good to themselves or society. We all know that. Unfortunately, writing a book such as this does very little good. Young people who end up reading this book find Chapie to be a hero. Well, he is a loser. The only reason I read this book was my son of 15 read it in record speed. It was the first book that he received from school that I did not have to say you got to finish that book. And it was the only one that he shoved in my hands and commented that it would be a great read. The writer, Russell Banks, is no doubt a prolific writer and has taken real advantage of his captive audience. Beware of writers who masquerade as the voice of the under-dog.

Summary: "Rule of the Bone" By: Russell Banks
Review: "Rule of the Bone" is a novel everyone should read. Russell Banks uses one word "INCREDIBLE" to describe his whole book. The author writes in a relaxed, unique style of writing. It's a type of book where the characters live a tough life and you never know what is going to take place next. Once you start to read the book you won't ever put it down.

There was a boy by the name of Chappie Dorset. He lived in a small town outside New York, with his harping mother and step-father. His parents abused him, and not surprisingly he manages to get kicked out of the house while still being in Elementary School. It was easy to follow the txt in the book, the language that was often used is too extreme but it lets you see what really happens when something like this takes place. This kind of an issue is taking place all over the world in our society, and we need to stop and think of how we can change to make things easier. I believe that kids need a role model to look up to, and someone there for you in your life. Chappie never had that experience so therefore he went off on his own and had no responsibility, Mom and step-dad were never there to care too much. So then Chappie meets some of his friends and a motorcycle gang and starts dealing drugs and getting himself into trouble.

I learned that you need to respect someone if they want to talk to you, if they need advice at least hear them out and be someone they can trust and count on in time of need. I really to reccommend this book to anyone, you never know what's it's like until you've had the experience.
