Rating: Summary: Interesting concepts of time, and how to waste it. Review: Once I got the idea of the book, a collection of 4 page episodes describing the effect of different time continuums on human behavior, I lost interest. Unfortunatly, these behavioral questions are not given a depth of description that allows one to be interested in a plot or a character. Perhaps instead of many short overviews, a couple of longer chapters would have given a more rich and real view of the relationship between human behavior and the element of time. Nothing new on alternate time theories for a science fiction fan. I would recommend reading a couple of randomly selected chapters, but more than that sees just repetitions with slight twists (not very interesting twists, at that). Perfect book for a waiting room table. Definately not poetry, either.
Rating: Summary: I know novels, and believe me, Einstein's Dreams is no novel Review: Einstein's Dreams is a beautifully written, thought provoking series of essays which I thoroughly enjoyed reading...however, calling this collection a novel is misleading. On the plus side, I've got several unconventional ideas about the shape of time and other concepts that I would like to share with the world. Perhaps I'll put them in a novel.
Rating: Summary: Glad it's short or i'ld have never finished Review: The first three chapters of the book are interesting - after that point it becomes clear that the reader is going to be reading nothing more than variations on the theme. I found myself increasingly uninterested as the author led me by the nose along a path of discovery which i could have more creativly and accuratly discovered on my own. The authors descriptions of worlds in which time operates different from our own insult the genius of Einstein by inffering that the words in this book are the subconscious workings of the great physicists mind. My thoughts were far deeper - I can only expect his were as well. It would be more accuratly titled "Lightman's Dreams"
Rating: Summary: Nothing better Review: Simply put, the best book written in the last ten years. An extraordinary meditation on time.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: A captivating look at the way time works. I could not put the book down until it was finished. I am planning to move on to his ohter works.
Rating: Summary: This book is amazing! Review: I picked up this book at the public library in 1994. The next day I bought it for my very own. Since that time I have recommended this book to everyone who would listen. I am a student in college studying math, and I must admit I have a fascination with Albert Einstein, but I am also studying creative writing, and took this book to class as an example of prose that reads like poetry. This book is beautifully written. I carry a copy with me in my book bag to read daily, and each time find new inspiration.
Rating: Summary: I stopped halfway through Review: It didn't hold me at all. The characters were uninteresting, and the plot evolved at a snails pace. Surprisingly unthoughtful for a book centering around mathematics and physics.
Rating: Summary: I have read this book a thousnad times! Review: I first picked up this book on a whim, the cover looked interesting. But, once I started it, I found that I just could not put it down. The chapters are short enough to read in just a few moments-- reread your favorite, or find a new favorite. All of them make a person stop and think about how life and time really works. It is not just a book for the "intellectual", I am a student, and it has quickly become a favorite of mine. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for something new and interesting. I promise you, it is one that you will want to read again and again.
Rating: Summary: Exceptional! Well worth the money! Read it ASAP! Review: I thought that this book was very good and it intrigued me into thinking about how time-space continum is put together. I especially liked the chapter where people have no memories or where if the future is predetermined that there is freedom in not have any. I would reccommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: A remarkable meditation on time and reality Review: We seldom stop to consider how the laws of the universe affect our lives. Alan Lightman is one who has who has spent the time to do that. He describes several worlds in which time behaves in ways that are bizarre and unusual (at least, to us)- and how it changes the people in those worlds. One of these worlds is ours. Any one of them could have been ours if nature had chosen a little differently. How would we react if we knew that everything was going to end on a certain day at a certain time? How would society develop if time ran at different rates for different towns? This book manages to make the science of time seem immediate and personal.
