Summary: Inspiring!
Review: Opus inspires the reader to be happy with ones self just the way you are. For Opus wants his penguin wings to help him fly, instead he saves the night doing what he does best, swimming. Great Book!

Summary: A tale about Christmas, wishes and reality
Review: This is a delightful tale about Christmas, wishes and reality. Opus the penguin laments the fact that he cannot fly like the snow ducks. Therefore, he writes a letter to Santa Claus asking for wings that work. Before going to bed on the night before Christmas, he tells a snow duck that he will be flying on Christmas morning. However, as Santa is making his rounds, there is a malfunction of the sleigh connections and the sleigh is disconnected from the pulling reindeer. Santa's sleigh begins to sink in a cold, icy lake and Opus is awakened.
He dives into the lake and swims like he never swam before. Clutching a towrope in his beak, he pulls the sleigh to land. Santa then tells him "I see no penguins here, whose wings only sputter. Tonight it was courage that flew yours beyond others." The next morning a group of snow ducks arrives and carries Opus into the air.
The moral of the story is that when we are wishing for new skills or possessions, we should never lose sight of the value of that we already have. It is done very well and fits well into the general spirit of the Christmas season.

Summary: A Wish For Wings That Work
Review: This is a great book. It shows how you don't often realize how valuable some things actually are. Opus wanted wings that would work. He was a penguin, so his wings didn't work. He didn't realize how valuable his ability to swim actually was. Santa's sleigh broke away from the reindeer and he was stranded in the middle of the water. Opus was the only one able to help him. He did, and Santa thanked him and told him how valuable his swimming ability was. Christmas morning, he woke up, and hundreds of snow ducks took him up in the air. It was almost as if he was flying. He really enjoyed it. He ended up "flying" on Christmas morning. I definitely recommend this story to anyone that wants a good book to read.

Summary: Very Enjoyable
Review: This is a thoroughly enjoyable book, though not as much fun as 'Red Ranger Came Calling.' The message is quite simple and the art work is fairly simple as well. This is a childs book, but in the proper, silly frame of mind, adults can get a real kick out of B. Breathed's books. By all means, check out the Red Ranger book. It is a real winner! It has some subtle humor that only the more mature can grasp. 'A Wish For Wings That Work' is a good book for children and works as a light read for adults.

Summary: A Christmas book for my generation
Review: This is such a special book, especially for 30-somethings like me who think of Bloom County as "our comic" (for my dad, it's Doonsbury, for my older brother, it's the Peanuts...). I am thrilled to share Opus with my kids now (I just wish Mr. Breathed wrote a bit more these days!). The moral of the story is that we all have our own unique strengths, and that is something to celebrate (as proven when the snow geese turn up at the end to take the heroic Opus for a fly!). Great stuff for people of all generations and ages.
