Summary: Good first effort, but details are wrong, wrong, wrong
Review: This is more or less a fairly good read, but loses a lot of credibility when a large part of the plot depends on a cell phone that still works after being dropped into a raging river, floating somehow into the hands of the killer, who uses it to further his psychotic episodes. There isn't a cell phone in the world that floats or works after getting wet, even a little wet. A few rain drops will kill any of them P.D.Q. I've had that sad experience so I know first hand. Also, the law enforcement or lack thereof in the story is so far-fetched as to be ludicrous even for the one-horse town depicted in the story. And the FBI agent's solo escapades are so far removed from reality that it is a laugh to anyone knowledgeable at all of FBI procedures. Kava has potential but needs to perform a lot more research on the details in future yarns.

Summary: Totally Fascinating, a Ture Whodunit
Review: This is the best murder/mystery/thriller that I have read in a long, long time. I was hooked within the first 39 pages and I never lost interest throughout the whole novel, I can't wait to read the second. The chemistry between the two main character, Sheriff Morelli and FBI Agent O'Dell has all the tension of the X-Files Scully and Mulder, but with a little more spice added. There are main smaller sub-plots throughout the book but they are so skillfully woven in you never became confused. For me the most exciting part is never being sure who was committing the murders and unlike many at the end you were still left wondering WhoDunIt!

Summary: Great Page Turner!
Review: Be prepared to stay up all night to finish, if that is what it takes. This is a great book!

Summary: Better Books are out There
Review: The premise sounded familiar - kids missing, serial killer, FBI, cute sheriff with a Harvard degree - so I figured I would like this debut novel. While a few things tried to be different - the sheriff's sister is a reporter who is in the right place at the right time and becomes the premiere reporter on the case - the characters are not fully developed. And the so-called twists at the end will make you go - oh brother !

Pick up Silence of the Lambs and reread it - or if less gore is you favorite, pick up any Agatha Christie story - you will be much more entertained.

Summary: GORE GALORE
Review: I think that Ms. Kava has made an attempt to join the ranks of Patricia Cromwell, Tami Hoag, etc. in producing a murder/mystery. This unsuccessful attempt has included surpassing those fine authors by showing that she can play be with the big boys as well, the more notorious masters of horror. Ms. Kava introduces so much gore and gruesome detail to her story line, that it appears she was going purely for the shock value it would produce. The book liner notes indicate that the original story, with heroine Maggie O'Dell, an FBI profiler, will be presented to the readers later this year. This first book then, is in essence a sequel. After reading "A Perfect Evil", all I can say is "NO thanks!" Our heroine, Maggie O'Dell is struggling through a marriage where she and her status seeking attorney husband have drifted apart. Additionally, she has an alcoholic mother, and is personally trying to overcome psychological problems brought on by another killer, (now in prison thanks to her intervention.) Through flashbacks, the reader is treated to a byplay of how this killer initially captured Maggie, and we are told, in great detail, of how he murdered (butchered) three women in her presence, before stabbing her as well. The present storyline involves the kidnap and capture of young boys, and of their subsequent torture and killing. The killer is a parish priest, with the victims serving as his altar boys. Ms. Kava does not try to keep the identity of the killer a secret, beyond throwing some suspicion onto the church janitor. The detention of the victims is disturbing as we see them crying for their mothers, and begging for mercy from their mentor. All to no avail, since they are still murdered by this serial killer, [...] priest. The narrative starts to fall apart during the middle of the book, and towards the end we get the feeling that Ms. Kava just wants to bring the story to closure as quickly as possible. She was probably as bored as I was. The author draws on the Hannibal Lector story by having her killer flee the country to South America, where we are left with the impression that he will continue his reign of terror. Before story's end, however, this killer helps Ms. O'Dell's nemesis escape from prison. Give me a break, Ms. Kava!

Summary: This book is merely a preface
Review: A Perfect Evil is really just an introduction to the character 'Maggie O'Dell'. Although the writing is fairly smooth, the plot is pretty simplistic and is generously scattered with references to the murderer 'Albert Stucky' who is not a character in this book, but apparently will star in her next story (as we can tell from the ads for the next book on both covers). The conclusion 'A Perfect Evil' is completely unsatisfying.

Summary: So Nearly Perfect . . .
Review: Maggie O'Dell and Nick Moretti have enough imperfections between them to have all the other characters in the book wondering if they'll ever solve the case. Somehow though they combine to prove an excellent team and lead us through a very entertaining saga in small town Nebraska.

A Prefect Evil provides a few new slants to the ever-popular "serial killer vs. FBI profiler" genre of novels. The plot moves along nicely and the characters are far more than stereotypes. Yes, there are a few recognizable "tricks of the trade" employed by Alex Kava (the multiple pairs of white sneakers for one), but overall this was an enjoyable and entertaining read. One star deducted because I couldn't quite get myself to enjoy the final chapter (personal preference).

Summary: Couldn't put it down
Review: The author Alex Kava graduated from the same college as myself so I just had to come and tell you all what a fabulous job she has done!!

The suspense was awesome in this book. I read it in one night! The characters are real and a joy to get to know. The story and the characters are in great balance which just produces a stellar book. I cannot wait for the next Alex creation.

Summary: Cheap romance
Review: I thought I was in for a treat after the first chapter. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a cheap romance and a very basic psychological thriller. The author even borrows Jeffery Deaver one of his psycho (Kava calls him 'The collector'... no joke!). Seduction scenes are too numerous and badly situated in the story, as an example, after the sheriff's nephew is kidnapped, this same sheriff is not anxious enough to stop being 'hot' for his love interest. Pity I can't give it 0 star!

Summary: Excellent Thriller
Review: A fast read and fast paced thriller. I couldn't put down until the end and have placed an order for the sequel. I highly recommend this book.
