Summary: Bill Hybels's most practical book yet.
Review:

Life is complicated. Decisions are difficult. How can we put God's wisdom into action in everyday life as well as in its critical turning points?

The world overflows with information, data and knowledge. But there is precious little wisdom. Yet wisdom is what we most desperately need when we face a problem at work or at home, with friends or in our own lives.

What factors are critical to achieving life's goals?
How can I get a friendship back on track?
Why is it so hard to trust God in certain situations?
How can I make a difference in the marketplace?
How should I respond to someone who is angry with me?
What is the surprising result of helping others?
How can I establish a solid financial foundation?

To answer questions like these we want sound advice from someone we respect, someone who knows how to succeed and how to deal with failure, who sees clearly the consequences of different courses of action. That's what Bill Hybels found in the book of Proverbs, and that's what he offers us. Here is advice that has been tested for centuries and found true about how to put God's wisdom into action.

Bill Hybels first turned to the book of Proverbs for just such guidance when he was a teenager. He found its practical truth to be precisely what he needed over the years as he faced important choices about finances, friendships, work, integrity, anger, marriage, parenting, compassion, discipline, truth, faith and more.

In these pages you will see how the principles for living consistently worked over the decades for the author and for hundreds of others he has led, worked with and prayed with. For ordinary people like them and us, Proverbs takes the ageless, priceless wisdom of God himself and makes it understandable and accessible. It's exactly what we need.

If it seems as though there's nothing less common than common sense, this book is for you. Includes study questions for individuals or groups.

Bill Hybels is pastor of Willow Creek Community Church, known worldwide for reaching out to the unchurched in the Chicago area. Willow Creek's "seeker sensitive" approach has had a major impact on churches across the United States and throughout the world. He and his wife, Lynne, are the parents of two children. Bill is chairman of the board of the Willow Creek Association and the author of a number of books, including Who You Are When No One's Looking and Too Busy Not to Pray.

Summary: The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is more in-depth.
Review: Bill Hybels picks 12 themes from the book of Proverbs and relates how he applies them in his own life and uses related verses from other books of the Bible to expound on those topics. It is an interesting discussion of practical highlights from Proverbs. For a more in-depth Biblical commentary on Proverbs which puts these ancient wise sayings in their historical context read THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. It features 6 translations in parallel to aid understanding and uses characters from the Bible to illustrate Solomon's witty observations on human nature.

Summary: Good insights but covers too much ground
Review: I generally enjoy Bill Hybels' books, and this one certainly contains its share of helpful and practical insights from the Book of Proverbs. However, it covers such a wide range of topics that by necessity it cannot delve too much in any one area. I'd rather see fewer topics covered in greater depth than lots of topics covered in a rather superficial, though entertaining, way. Also, don't expect in-depth Biblical analysis; generally, this is a hands-on book and not a particularly sophisticated treatment of the Biblical material.

Summary: A practical book for everyone, Christians and non-Christians
Review: I've enjoyed reading Bill Hybels almost as much as listening to hear him speak. His insights on the book of Proverbs made me realize just how valuable this book in the Bible really is. As well as offering practical advice for daily Christian growth, this book is also understandable and forthright towards seekers as well. Great for discussing spirituality with your non-churched friends.
