Review: I enjoyed this book a lot. Heard it mentioned on the 'Live With Regis & Kelly Show" and thought I'd check it our. Glad I did. So much in fact that I've ordered the second book by this writer, and I find myself looking forward to receiving it with growing anticiapation

Summary: I loved this book...
Review: Ok, I've never read a book by the author and after I finished this book I could see what I was missing out on. Roman Chandler has lost a coin toss and made a very unusual bet with his brothers. Well, Chase didn't take any part in it. But Roman and Rick did. And Roman lost. Which means he has to get married. Sounds easy right? Well, it should be. He's supposed to just find someone to marry, have kids and travel and not spend a lot of time at home. But, the person he wants is the one that got away. Yup, you guessed it. It's Charlotte Bronson who comes back to get her sexy and racy lingerie business off the ground. And when she comes back and sees Roman again, neither of them can deny their feelings anymore. Charlotte wants a man who won't go chasing stories on the other side of the earth. She wants the marriage her parents never had. Is Roman ready to give that to her? I guess you have to read the book to find out. You won't be dissappointed.

Review: THE BACHELOR could have been worse, but it should have been so much better. What a pity that, out of all of the romance novels in print, Kelly Ripa of the television show LIVE WITH REGIS & KELLY chose this novel for her "trashy"--her own term--book club.To be fair, there is nothing wrong with Ms. Phillips' writing, but there is nothing special about her prose, either. Her language is not elegant and the story itself is so thin as to be little more than a glorified outline. It's implausible as well--"the bachelor" is a foreign correspondent who is being lured by no less a publication than the WASHINGTON POST--and the outcome is predictable. It is consistent with the lack of effort evidenced that the characters in this novel neither are interesting nor well-developed. And her sex scenes, in a genre in which the sex sizzles, barely are adequate. A reader wishing to see how a skilled romance writer does the job should open anything written by that other Phillips, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, or by Nora Roberts or Elizabeth Lowell or Rachel Gibson or Jane Graves or Linda Howard or...well, there are dozens of authors who do a better job with this kind of novel. THE BACHELOR wasn't bad, but it also was far from terrific.

Summary: Couldn't Get Past Page 38
Review: This one is going back to the bookstore before I even break the binding. I'll admit, I bought it with some reserve but I was influenced by the hype surrounding it. Big mistake. My intelligence was insulted too many times in just 38 pages. First off, there's the premise we're supposed to believe that three strong, male, adult characters are going to flip a coin (literally) to see which one will interrupt their life and career to find someone to marry and impregnate as soon as possible. This, because of a deceitful mother who is pretending to be seriously ill just so she can trick her very successful, handsome and presumably intelligent sons into giving her a grandchild (thoroughly non-believable). Then there was the paragraph on page 33 that took my breath away for its total stupidity. "Roman took a bite of his burger without waiting for Chase to finish with the ketchup. He chewed and swallowed." Had the author not written that, I might not have known that the characters were actually going to eat the food they'd just been served! This was followed closely by a scene in the same restaurant where Roman meets up with the girl he dated in high school and hasn't seen in ten years. They literally bump into each other near the restrooms and in one fell swoop he's asking her when she's "going to give in to him", and how "years melted away as his hands bracketed either side of her head and his lips hovered near her jaw" which made her wonder "why she'd resisted him for so long". Excuse me? Maybe because you haven't seen him in ten years??? This scene continues on - remember, they haven't seen each other in ten years - to where he is now passionately kissing her in the doorway of the women's restroom and was lapping at her earlobe at "exactly the right spot" while tapping into the "deepest desire she'd ever harbored". What a bunch of inane tripe! The only thing missing from this book is Fabio on the cover. At least then the reader would know what they're in for.
I gave this one star for the author's savvy in actually getting it published.

Review: I found this book hard to finish. It was boring and silly at times. Since this is the first time I have read this author it will be the last. I read a lot so almost didn't finish and go to another book. But thought if I kept reading it would get better but it didn't.

Review: Now this book was great! It kept my attention the whole time and I didn't have to go back and reread paragraphs like I do in other books that don't keep my attention. The plot is great and so is the writing! Just like Kelly said, page 166 was a great page to read! Read this book for some great laughs!

Summary: Simple Reading
Review: I was looking forward to reading this "light-reading" book...and that it was. I wouldn't say that it is bad, but there were some things that were hard to take. The two main characters (Roman and Charlotte) had one date in high school, now years later they're still into each other and he thinks she's the one he is to marry. Give me a break. His mom leads him to believe she has a fatal heart condition (so that her sons will get married and give her a grandchild...again...give me a break), Roman, and his two brothers are like "okay, take it easy mom, let us know if you need anything". Also, the person who breaks into peoples homes to steal crocheted panties to keep the local business in business???? What was that all about? Who cares??? I found myself skipping whole paragraphs of these characters thoughts (I got sick of their whining) just to get through the book. But, I pressed on and in the end, kind of liked it for what it was... light reading and no major commitment into the characters (though I probably will read the next book in this trilogy...Playboy...just to see what happens to the next brother).

Summary: WRITING SO BAD IT'S UNREADABLE
Review: I LOVE Kelly Ripa. Watch the show every day. Also really like light fiction, romance and sexy novels. Couldn't wait to try this book. The writing is SO atrocious, so banal that I could not read it. Every scene is predictible. Sentence structure is 2nd grade level, writing actually repeats itself from paragraph to paragraph. Two pages of sex doesn't cut it, and even that is poorly written. Kelly, I've lost some respect for you. You ought to fire your research staff and get some college educated people helping you. Sorry folks, I wanted to like this. It's worse than Jacqueline Suzanne.

Summary: Book One of a Trio of Bachelor Brothers
Review: I have read every single book that Carly Phillips has written and have been waiting eagerly for her first ever single title, THE BACHELOR. Carly knows how to knock them dead with her sensual writing and believable characters. I had already enjoyed reading THE BACHELOR when Kelly Ripa selected it as her book choice for her reading club.
I have one thing to say for Kelly's choice: You picked a good one Kelly! I will admit it started out slow, but this is because Ms Phillips had to set up not only this story, but also the other brother's stories that are coming out. She had to flesh the characters out and get them in place before she got to the meat of this story...the romance between the globe trotting Roman Chandler and the lingerie shop owner Charlotte Bronson. I loved the humor that is in this story. It is not laugh out loud humor, but a reactionary type humor that I like. Although there were a few scenes that had me laughing out loud. It is sensual, with romance being the big emphasis here. Certainly something that Carly Phillips is good at, since she started out writing romances with the Harlequin Temptation and Blaze lines. And woven throughout the story is the panty robber mystery that kept me wondering who it was. But keep in mind, this is a romance book, not a mystery, so don't expect guts and gory in this book, but good old fashioned love and ultimately, marriage. THE BACHELOR is not a blazing book along the lines of a classic book, but as a romance book it is an excellent book. One that a lover of a good romance can pick up and know they will have a good time reading. I can't wait until the next book about another brother is out. It is definitely on my to be bought list.
