Summary: Ejd's Worst
Review: I am a fan of EJD but this is the worst book I have ever read by this great author. I don't even know where to begin to explain how much I did not like this book, so to sum it up,the book just simply should not have been written. I wish I could get my money back. I would not recommend this book to anyone unless they are prepared to be disappointed.

Summary: Reader's Paradise!
Review: Oops.

I've done it again. I rarely fall in love with a writer on their debut effort. 'Thieves' Paradise', if I'm not mistaken, is Eric Jerome Dickey's 7th novel? I've been asleep at the literary wheel.

With the exception of the prologue (which was a dramatic and necessary bit of background - though I would rather have gotten it a little later in the story), I was hooked from chapter one by his cool, gritty style.

From 'cool hand' Dante & Scamz, to grotesgue Big Slim and the sad Pam; from smokey and murderous dives to lifestyles of the rich Cribs & Clubs . . . the characters and settings in Thieve's... are so real you can see them, smell them, and feel their pain.

I don't know if anyone else has ever experienced this---a moment when you simple must make eye contact with the writer and say, 'You go, Boy!' or 'You nasty MF!'---but at least once in every chapter, a certain scene, turn of phrase or just SOMETHING caused me to flip the book to EJD's picture on the back cover and express some sort of dramatic emotion. The book is THAT GOOD!

Now I'm not one to ruin a plot, so simply put . . . it's about crime, scams, and the things that we sometimes must do to make a buck. But it's the fullness and richness of the characters (mostly Dante & Big Slim, some of the other's are less 3-dimensional... but that's OK 'cause it works), which makes 'Thieves' Paradise' my most engaging read of 2003 . . . to date.

The good thing about getting my teeth into E. J. Dickey at this stage of his game is that I can now backtrack and absorb the first six novels.

Big Ups to Eric Jerome Dickey, you've got one more fan, not that you need it, I'm sure.

Summary: Dickey At His Best
Review: Every time I pick up a book by Mr.Dickey I am never ever disappointed. He always has good story lines when he sets the story in LA. This book is about con artists. But in all reality these cons and scams really do happen in real life. I know having been conned. The drama and not dramady in this book will have you laughing as well as crying sometimes. I thought it was a fun and fast read.

Summary: All In a Days Work . . .or Crime Never Pays
Review: Or at least, that's what they tell you. However, for Dante, who couldn't get a job, no matter how hard he tried, falling back into his criminal life was the only thing that was paying. But everyone has their own agenda. Having a fondness for eating every now and then, Dante just wanted something to tide him over until he could get a "real" job. Jackson just wanted to get his [mad] ex and the court off his back. Pam was convinced that getting surgery that had nothing to do with her face was the key to making her a star. And Scamz was the leader of this band of misfits that played them all. Or did he play himself? Maybe they all played themselves in an effort to play the game.

This was certainly a different read for EJD. I enjoyed it alot. And while it was different, it was still classic Eric, who can turn a phrase as no other. I would love to see how this would play out as a movie. It think it would be interesting. At any rate, if you are already an EJD fan, I think you will enjoy this. But don't expect the usual fair. This is different, but no less good.

Summary: ehh---It was alright
Review: This author is normally a superb writer. I have all of his books and usually cant wait to read the next one but this is one book I could have kept out of my collection. For Eric, this book is a flop. He states at the end that he started this in college during one of his thesis'. Well in my opinion, he should have left it where he started it...in school.
I still cant wait to see what's next with E.J. Dickey. He is normally a fabulous writer.

Summary: Page Turning Action
Review: EJD does it again...For those looking for reality, I suggest: stop reading fiction! This book is definitely destined for the big screen. EJD writes with such skill and the imagery he creates is so vivid. I enjoy reading EJD because of his talent, attention to detail, his ability to draw symmetry between the past and present, his artistic blend of fiction and fantasy...All of it just jumps off the pages! TP is definitely different than his other works, but the quality of his writing just gets better...I love the way he brings cameos of characters from his other works! Two thumbs up, Eric!
