Description:
Perhaps it's the medium, but this audio rendition of the Starr Report turns Kenneth Starr's four-year investigation into Sunday evening melodrama on NPR. As actors David Ackroyd (brother of Dan) and Tracy Brooks Swope recount the incredibly detailed Clinton/Lewinsky affairs, using stern words like "obstruction" and "judicial," it's hard to suppress a giggle. Then professors of law Alan Dershowitz and Erwin Chemerinsky chirp in, asking listeners to concentrate on these questions: Did President Clinton suborn justice? Did he lie under oath? Did he lie to the grand jury? Did he abuse the powers of the Office of the President? And if he committed these offenses, is this grounds for perjury? It's possible that Clinton did all these things, but do die-hard followers of this steamy saga really care? Or are they already fast-forwarding to the good parts, reducing the civic-minded Starr's report to base entertainment? Still, this is great unabridged listening--it's just not what the Office of Independent Council had in mind. --Rob McDonald
