Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: All of Sharon McCrumb's stories starring Sheriff Spencer Arrowood, Nora Bonesteel, and the cast in the northeastern Tennessee mountains are outstanding; but "She Walks These Hills" is just exceptional. McCrumb manages to tell more than one fascinating story at a time, weaving them seamlessly. You feel you know characters personally; you root for them, you're sad for them; you almost feel you can phone them. McCrumb's style holds your interest, you don't want to put the book down, and yet they are so comfortable and easy going. I've done a lot of genealogical research in this area and once in awhile an actual name I've worked on pops up in a book - and I usually agree with her assessment. My only complaint is that the books don't come fast enough. I've converted many people to Sharon McCrumb readers - you won't be disappointed either - no matter which one you start with.
Rating: Summary: An enchanted mix of folklore and present day happenings. Review: An enticing mystery on several different levels. The ghost of a pioneer girl walks the mountain trails in search of peace after being kidnapped by the Indians. A 63 year old felon escapes prison and believes he is still in the 1960's. Murder and mayhem abound in a present day Appalachian town. Set in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains all is not what it seems.A fast paced mystery with a dash of exclusivity that spices it up and gives it a punch of unique individualism. I did find it a bit predictable but enjoyable none the less. Kelsana 6/10/02
Rating: Summary: Another spooky Appalachian tale from a master storyteller Review: Appalachian magic and tragedy are again vividly portrayed for the lucky readers of this book. McCrumb's ability to convincingly weave the supernatural world with the everyday real world makes for a deliciously chilling story. (perfect for Halloween!) The sights, smells, textures, sounds and tastes of the mountains is so powerful that by the end of the book one fells "homesick" for them. I've never been to Appalachia, but because of McCrumb's writing I'm determined to go someday. The history, geography and culture of that region are fascinating, and this book reveals them all in the context of two wonderful narratives, ghostly and human.
Rating: Summary: A very well written and enjoyable book! Review: Believe me, being a freshman at Otterbein College I was quite surprised at recieving a book of this nature as a required reading piece for college.. This book is everything that nearly all required literature has been for me throughout school.. This book has plausible characters and a great story to tell.. The references that McCrumb makes to Appalachian culture (being one of her key elements that she revels in) can get a bit overbearing at times.. but overall the story is an outstanding piece of work that can be appreciated by just about anyone!!
Rating: Summary: The Crown Jewel of the Ballad Series Review: Having read all of the Ballad series by McCrumb, I have to say that this one is the best, and believe me, I loved them all. She Walks These Hills was haunting, tragic and beautifully written.
Rating: Summary: A very entertaining book! Review: I admit it. I am a fan of Sharyn McCrumb having read some of the Elizabeth MacPherson books. This book's setting is the Great Smoky Mountain area of east Tennessee. McCrumb uses a folktale from the area to provide the basis of a modern tale while relating it to events in the past. This book is part of a series featuring several of the same characters and I look forward to each one.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: I couldn't put this book down. It was excellent! There were so many sub-plots going on, and they were all so interesting. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I really recommend this book. So far, the Ballad Series hasn't let me down.
Rating: Summary: Very good, enjoyable, interesting, but not a five-star book Review: I enjoyed Ms. McCrumb's book. I liked the characters, especially the college professor lost in the woods and Mrs. Pentland & Nora Bonesteel. But I didn't think the book was a five-star novel, nor the best novel of the year as the cover touted.
Rating: Summary: Deliciously Terrifying Review: I felt this one in my bones. The soul wandering the hills in this excellent novel can chill you when she crosses your path. I found myself wanting to go along with her in her sad traipsing.
Rating: Summary: I'll be reading more Sharyn McCrumb! Review: I got this book as a gift from family who live in East Tennessee and were supporting a "local" author. But they said nothing about how GOOD the book is! Well, it is a VERY good book and McCrumb easily ranks up there with Conroy and Hillerman. I found myself breezing through the book in record time, unable to put it down. And like Chad below, it's my first but I'll be reading more. Just returned from the bookstore (sorry, amazon!) where I purchased the other three in the Ballad series.
